Startup Is Getting Slower

startup is getting slower although i've allways used a firewall and anti-virus, have teenagers who go to sites they shold not goto, also an on-line virus scan once found a virus, panda titanium missed.here is my hjt log please advise

Hello toptechncw , Welcome to the forum.

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.


Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

hello LDTate.

for starters thanks for your help in advance.
computer acts as far as I can see the seem as it did.
as you suggested downloaded the newest cws shredder from your link(my version was a bit outdated) ran it and as always nothing found.
then performed online scans trendmicro & etrust av web scan, nothing found
scanned with my av :panda titanium 2004 up to date, nothing found
reinstalled spybot sd & ad-aware se downloaded thru your links although they were up to date as always and ran them,spybot found as for some time now a
entry from altnet (hkey_local_machine\software\altnet) it can not remove also not afther a restart.
ad-aware found some things as ussually but removes them.
everything done as you instructed.
starting to think that the slowing down comes from problems in the register, but first would like to get rid if that altnet carp**.
as requested now follows the latest hijacklog.

I suggest you do this:


Use Add/remove Programs and remove these if listed:
altnet
Kazaa


Run HijackThis again and put a check by these.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dash upload] C:\PROGRA~1\mealaimscr\Multi City Soft.exe

ALL 016's. They'll come back if needed,

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"




Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.


Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.




Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.



Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.


Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.


Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

I've checked but no kazaa or altnet found to be removed(although I know kazaa in the beginning was installed by one of the kids) as far as I know I removed it then.
did everything else you suggested.
computer seems to run somewhat faster again BUT spybot sd still finds the altnet entry and still can not remove it.

Where does it list Altnet at being on your system?

I'm at work right now, but do you know how to use Regedit? If so, you can search for Altnet and delete all entries found. If you haven't used Regedit before, I'll post back later and tell you how.

Hello LDTate It seems my latest reply didn't get posted somehow, so here's what happend. I'm not realy familiar with regedit, but read some items about it so went there anyway. Found the location of the altnet file, tried to remove it but that gave the error (error in opening the key). Then i did a surch for Altnet, that resulted in 3 entries of wich i could remove 2. but still not the stubbern one. I found out the file Altnet containd a file Dashboard, witch containd a file called settings, this last one gives the error opening key. Somewhere in this exploring i saw the name of one off the kids. then i used hitman pro logged in as that user and IT GOT REMOVED :D . So it seems that when you run spybot and other programs off that kind it SEEMS to scan all of the computer but somehowe dos not work good. Now i've got the passwords off all users and am cleaning up from out all off there accounts. My excuses for gramma errors I dont translate into (american/englisch) that often. I think I've got the problem likked, computer now seems yet somewhat faster so when i'm done I prosume I'm a happy dutchman again, THANKS FOR THE HELP. By the way the program hitman pro is a dutch program that runs all the programs we have used, it downloads them updates them and runs them, leaving one report with the details off all off the scans, you should be able to get it at www.hitmanpro.nl not sure if there's a english version but it only works with xp and 2000. for now greetings from toptechncw :)

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK




If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

yes this was from the "infected"user. exept for iespy ad I have all the programs we've used(and a few more) on the pc's for years now, and used them frequently but this our latest comp. is the first one with xp and multiple user accounts, when watching a scan i saw all usernames pass so I assumed everything got scanned and cleaned. I know i still have some safety issus to tackle but in time ill find the balance between each users privacy and good working scans. do I have to Unsubscribe the other postings (2) which somehowe went wrong or do they get deleted autom. in a few days??. if this is the last time i have to repley I want to thank you very much for your help there are no applauding hands between the smilies else i'd give 'm to you now. its nice to have some help when you are looking thru "dirty""windows" ;) . greetings from toptechncw :thumbup: :)
