Many popups and have almost lost control of system (ie. in 5 min I could have 30+ windows open on me).

Ran SBS&D, AdAwareSE and CCleaner.

HJT log attached - would appreciate someone taking a look at this.

Thanks

Hello Rio , Welcome to the forum.

Important: Do this before any fix.

You need to update your version of HijackThis. Open HJT> Config> Misc Tools> Check for update online. If that doesn't work, download it from my signature and remove the hijackThis.exe you have now.

Also please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

After the above:

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks for picking up on this LDTate :)

Ran updated versions of the following in the order you indicated and listed below:

* eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner: findings captured in log attached
* TrendMicro HouseCall scan: identified a number of items it cleaned/deleted
* CWShredder: found nothing
* Spybot S&D: cleaned everything except "Huntbar" ran again at reboot and it still could not clean it.
* AdAwareSE
* CCleaner

Then rebooted and ran the attached HJT log (with updated version).

Still getting a number of popups. examples: "http://ads1revenue…", "* * * * ***System Warning! …", "Search Results for …." "Get a free *PS2!…"

Should I delete the "System Volume Information" folder and its contents? Both the TrendMicro HouseCall scan and AdAware scan seemed to focus on items from this folder. Folder largely consists of "\_restore{….}" files.

Should I delete the "System Volume Information" folder and its contents?

NO. We'll get to that. That is a windows folder and holds your Restore Point. Please don't delete anything unless instructed to.

* Download this tool: http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/LQfix.zip
Unzip it to your Desktop.
Don't use it yet!

* Reboot into safe mode by tapping F8 frequently during bootup, and run the tool.

* Reboot into normal mode,

Run HijackThis again and put a check by these.

Cleaned everything detected. SBS&D continues to detect "Huntbar", but is not able to clean it.

New HJT log attached. From my glance of this, it seems that some of the 04 items I deleted are back again (ie. the mikran.exe file. I went back the the directory, but its not there and I do have the settings at show all hidden files - I don't get it??)

No I am not able to see this in the directory indicated despite having everything set to show under folder options. When I ran KillBox it indicated that it was destroyed, but if I do the HJT scan it is still there as the log I posted shows.
Wanted to add the following to the posting I just made.

I went back to try the Killbox again. Same result. It finishes by saying it has destroyed the C:\WINDOWS\System32\mikarn.exe yet if I run the HJT scan it is still there.

In HJT if I check the 04 entry and fix it, it does go away if I rerun the scan before rebooting. When I reboot, however, it is back.

Don't know if this helps or not.
Do this so you can see hidden files and folders - click http://www.eudaemonia.me.uk/downloads/Reg-fixes/xphidden.zip to download xphidden.zip. Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double-click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

Download FindQoologic-Narrator. Save it to your Desktop.

Extract (unzip) the files inside into their own folder called FindQoologic. Open the FindQoologic folder. Preferable to your desktop. Locate and double-click the Find-Qoologic.bat file to run it. Wait until a text opens, post it in a reply to your thread.
PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL FILES FOUND BY THIS METHOD ARE NOT BAD FILES, THERE MIGHT BE LEGIT FILES LISTED AND PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHILE FIXING. IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF WHAT IT IS LEAVE THEM ALONE. »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» Files found in System »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» Checking Global Startup »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» NOT using address check – 0x77f5bd48 Global Startup: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup . ..
