Hi:

You have been a great help and blessing to me in the past. I'm visiting my parents and my Dad's computer is having problems–running slow. I ran Adaware and Spybot. found some spam/malware and one item that adaware could not remove. A file called "okshook.dll" Research says it's related to spyware called marketscore. This spyware added certificates under his IE options that can be removed (re-appear after reboot).

I ran HJT with the resulting log which I sense has problems. Please advise.

Hello dhoff,

Please do all the steps in the order they are listed

Uninstall Virtumundo from control panel >> add remove program if listed there

Reboot if Virtumundo is found. If not found just continue.

Download LSPfix here: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Start the program and then check the I know what I'm doing box.

Move all instances of osmim.dll (and nothing else), to the Remove pane.
Click the Finish Button and reboot.

Find and delete the file c:\windows\system\osmim.dll

1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Restart your computer.

This is what I suggest you do next.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
LDTate:

We followed all your steps. Here's the highlights of what happen:

1. Vitumundo was not on the computer
2. We did not find "osmin.dll under "c:\windows\system" but did find it under "c:\windows\system32" and deleted it.
3. CWShredder found nothing
4. Ran TrendMicro housecall and it found no infections
5. Ran latest version of Spybot with updates and it found 7 items and fixed
(AvenueA,Inc, Advertising.com, DoubleClick, LinkSynergy, MarketAcore, and MediaFlex)
6. Ran latest version of Ad-Aware with updates and it found 5 items and removed.
7. Nothing was in the recycle bin to empty.

Note: We did all reboots as requested. Each time windows noted a program running that we had to end. Program name was Hearbeat (Dad thinks it used to be part of a weather service).

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Did the next steps as requested. Computer seems a bit faster and the Heartbeat program was not running on shut-down! Note the following: NewDotNet and The Weather Channel FW were not in the Add/Remove list. The folder options were set as requested, except for "Hide protected operating system files" Got a warning message from windows, but went ahead and deselected as requested. Should we put this back after we are done? Click Start> Run> type in Msconfig Look in Startup and see if it's listed there. If so and it's unchecked, put a check by it. Let me know please.
Go back and uncheck it: NEWDOT~1"

I suggest you do this:

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [New.net Startup] rundll32 C:\PROGRA~1\NEWDOT~1\NEWDOT~1.DLL,NewDotNetStartup -s

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

Do you know how to use Regedit?
I think I've run Regedit a LONG time ago–not sure. I'll try if you think you can convey instructions easily. I did line fix in HJT and rebooted. Upon restart I got this message: System Configuration Utility (SCU) You have used the SCU to make changes to the way Windows starts. The SCU is currently in Diagnostic or Selective startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts. Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made. [ ] Don't show this message or launch the SCU when windows starts. I left the box unchecked and selected OK. BTW, the utility came up and I noticed the NEWDOT~1 is selected again Here's the HJT log (looks like NEWDOT~1 is till there): Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 3:14:40 PM, on 3/27/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\cisvc.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\devldr32.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\AdvTools\NPROTECT.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\My Downloads\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe O2 - BHO: Yahoo!
