Hello rhanania and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

This version is a self-extracting file so there is no need to unzip it. We need to see a current version of Hijackthis to show all parts of the infection that you have. Version 1.97.7 will not show all that we need to see to remove it.

Please delete the version of HijackThis you have now. There is a new version out which you can get here. Save the file to your desktop.

Double click HijackThis_sfx.exe and select Unzip. When done click "OK".
Close the WinZip self Extractor window.

Navigate to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and double click HijackThis.exe. Scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread.

If this still will not work, try downloading HijackThis.exe and save it to it's own folder.

Post a new log when done.
Hi Alan, Thanks for your help. I tried the unzip and PC kept freezing. So I downloaded the hijackthis.exe and saved it in it's own folder on the desktop, but when you click on the folder system freezes again. I was able to run the program from "Start menu" then "Run" Anyways here is the log, and thanks again!

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.

If you have any problems getting the following programs, you may need to download them from another computer, unzip them into their own folder, than copy that folder to your computer.
  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare AboutBuster for use:
    • Download AboutBuster.
    • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
    • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
    • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
    • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
    • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
  • Prepare cwsserviceremove.reg for use:
    • Download cwsserviceremove.zip.
    • Unzip the contents of cwsserviceremove.zip (cwsserviceremove.reg) to your desktop.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Disable the offending service.
Go to Start->Run and type Services.msc then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:
Workstation NetLogon Service

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  • Run CWShredder:
    • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
    • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
    • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
    • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
  • Remove the offending service:
    • Double-click on cwsserviceremove.reg you downloaded earlier.
    • When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click "Yes".
  • Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
    • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click OK at the directions prompt.
    • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
    • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
    • It will begin to your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
    • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I need a copy of it.
  • Clean out temporary files:
    • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
    • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
    • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
  • Free TrendMicro Housecall scan:
    • Vist the TrendMicro Housecall website.
    • Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Go".
    • Choose "Yes" at the ActiveX Security Warning prompt.
    • Please wait while the Housecall engine is updated.
    • Select the drives to be scanned by placing a check in their respective boxes.
    • Check the "Auto Clean" box.
    • Click "SCAN" in order to begin scanning your system.
    • Please be patient while Housecall scans your system for malicious files.
    • If not auto-cleaned, remove anything it finds.
    • Click "Close" to exit the Housecall scanner.
    • Choose "Yes" at the HouseCall message prompt.
  • Prepare your reply:
    • Please post a fresh HijackThis log
    • Please post the AboutBuster log.
    • Please note any complications you had.
Please make sure that wordwrap is turned off on notepad when posting your next reply. (In notepad - Click Format, and uncheck wordwrap)
Hey Alan, Thanks for the clear directions!

Well, after booting into safe mode and running the programs I restarted the computer in normal mode and the home page was back to normal for about a minute and then I got about:blank again!

My startup monitor keeps telling that "apiqm32.exe" is trying to boot itself at startup so I choose to block the action but it keeps coming back!

I couldn't run the housecall scan because when I install the activeX, IE says " a problem with an add-on…. " and it closes the window. The add on is "apieo.dll"

here is a fresh HijackThis and the AboutBuster log:

As always, your help is greatly appreciated.
Click here to download DllCompare. Start the Program with and click the Run Locate.com - be sure the \Windows\System32 directory is in the box and wait until the the blue text says it has 'completed the scan'.

Click the Compare button to start the next process. The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist', files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'. Very few files should be listed in the lower pane when the Compare scan is complete. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button and post the log here.

Did you have any problem disabling the Workstation NetLogon Service service in the previous steps?
OK, I did what you asked and the program didn't find anything. Here is the log: * DLLCompare Log version(1.0.0.127) Files Found that Windows does not See or cannot Access *Not everything listed here means you are infected! ________________________________________________ O^E says: "There were no files found :)" ________________________________________________ 1,413 items found: 1,413 files, 0 directories. Total of file sizes: 321,646,184 bytes 306.74 M Administrator Account = True ——————–End log——————— Also, I had no problems with disabling the Workstation NetLogon Service but when I checked it now under "status" it said started and under "startup type: it said automatic!?! I'm 100% sure I hit apply before OK. Should I try again?? Thanks

  • Removal with HijackThis
Open HijackThis, run a scan, and check the following:

Thanks for all your help, I'll be sure to leave a donation. My system is much better now. However, it still freezes if I click on icons on the desktop.
Actually, I just tried clicking on MY Computer on the desktop and it didn't freeze!!
Click here to download mwavscan. Double-click it to run it, select all local drives, scan all files, press 'scan' and when it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane. Highlight it, CTRL C and paste it in your next reply.

Also post a new Hijackthis log. :)

Thanks in advance!
You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.

Step 1
Please set your computer to show all files.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Step 2
Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter'). Delete the following files.

C:\WINDOWS\oyqqld.dat
C:\WINDOWS\glfrjn.txt
C:\WINDOWS\gqvlng.dat
C:\WINDOWS\tfhyqx.dat
C:\WINDOWS\voqmgn.dat
C:\WINDOWS\yoiwff.dat
C:\WINDOWS\javazq.dll
C:\WINDOWS\jcsvff.dat
C:\WINDOWS\egxml.dll
C:\WINDOWS\mdfxpo.dat
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mvfuq.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3dz.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mvfuq.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\d3dz.exe
C:\WINDOWS\oyqqld.dat
C:\WINDOWS\glfrjn.txt
C:\WINDOWS\gqvlng.dat
C:\WINDOWS\tfhyqx.dat
C:\WINDOWS\voqmgn.dat
C:\WINDOWS\yoiwff.dat
C:\WINDOWS\javazq.dll
C:\WINDOWS\jcsvff.dat
C:\WINDOWS\egxml.dll
C:\WINDOWS\mdfxpo.dat
C:\setup233.exe
C:\SaveInstCsSm.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\My Documents\Data\Data\all_files4.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\My Documents\Data\Data\MemWatcher2.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\My Documents\Data\all_files4.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\My Documents\Data\MemWatcher2.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\SNIFF\Start Menu\erostars.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\SNIFF\Desktop\erostars.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.RAMRASH\My Documents\Data\Data\MemWatcher2.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.RAMRASH\My Documents\Data\Data\all_files4.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.RAMRASH\My Documents\Data\MemWatcher2.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.RAMRASH\My Documents\Data\all_files4.exe
C:\Program Files\Iomega\System32\Win2kDrivers.exe
C:\netdialer.exe
F:\Documents and Settings\SNIFF\Desktop\erostars.exe

Step 3
Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\Every username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files (Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Delete Files), be sure to also select delete all offline content.
Empty the Recycle Bin.

Step 4
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the Performance tab, click File System, or press ALT+F.
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
4. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 3, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

Step 5
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log and a new mwavscan log.
OK deleted all files except for d3dz.exe can't find it.

Here is the HijackThis log:
