Hi, Hans – Thanks for responding. Spyware Cleaner appeared (uninvited) on my computer a few weeks ago, and I realized almost immediately that it was in fact spyware itself. I wasn't able to uninstall it because it didn't appear in the list of programs in Add/Remove programs. I didn't find it in my Program Files directory, nor did I find it with a search for "spyware cleaner" on any of my drives. I did send its icons on my desktop to the trash, but I do know that that doesn't uninstall anything. I was somewhat dismayed to see it in the log. I realize I should probably have included this information in my original post, and I do apologize for not doing so. :totally embarrassed: I hope this is now sufficient information – if not please let me know. Thanks again for being here!
If you can't find it, don't worry. Then just fix this line with HijackThis: O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Spyware Cleaner] "E:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner\SpywareCleaner.Exe" /boot :)
You're welcome :)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers real-time protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
I also suggest that you delete your Temp folders regularly. Use CleanUp! to do this automatically for you!
