You can use windows sfc (system file checker) You'd need your Windows CD to make this work. This will fix any corrupt files
Click Start> Run> type sfc /scannow Note the space.
There is no "Tools" listed in the My Computer folder. The only "folder options" thing I see is under Start->Settings->Folder Options, and "hide protected operating system files" isn't listed under it.
OK. Lets try it this way.
1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, click System Information, and then click System File Checker on the Tools menu.
2. Click one of the following options:
Scan For Altered Files
3. Click Settings, choose the configuration you want to use in System File Checker Settings, click OK, and then click Start.
Okay, it found a corrupted file (setupx.dll) in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder and restored it.
There were two options under settings, to check for changed files and deleted files, but I didn't select them. Should I have? And should I restart the machine and see what happens?
Yes, reboot and see if it fixed the problem first. If not fixed, then run again and
Check for changed files and Check for deleted files, as well as selecting to Always back up before restoring.
Nope, the problem wasn't fixed after either try.
And I just connected to the internet with that machine, and got another warning: StartPage-DU.dll.dr infected another file (DCCLDA.DLL), and VirusScan cleaned and deleted it.
Hey, sorry, the download took over an hour (stupid dial-up connection), and the scan took another half hour after that. The results were the same: no viruses were found.
Thanks again for all of your help tonight. Looking forward to hearing from you tomorrow.
Unzip the contents to a folder, then open the folder and double-click on Find.bat. It will run for a minute, then produce a log. Copy and paste the log here.
