Hi Comrades

I wonder if you can help me. I've had a problem with about:blank hijacking my browser for a considerable while now. I've used Spybot and Ad-aware without success. I've used HJT with limited success by fixing the about:blank references and registry entries pointing to sp & se dlls etc.

However the problem keeps coming back.

I attach two HJT logs (one pre and one post fixes). Any help would be appreciated

Hello NickArnold , welcome to the TC. Messenger plus is full of spyware and adware if you installed it and did not choose the option not to load advertising support. Use Add/Remove Programs and remove Messenger plus. You can re-install Messenger plus later, just remember to install without advertising support. 1. Open My Computer 2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example) 3. In the context menu that opens, select properties 4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup 5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes 6. A box will display the various files you can remove. Check all boxes except compress old files (If listed) 7. Click OK and windows will comply. Restart your computer. Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks for the help.
I've removed Messsenger Plus and ran the disk cleanup as you reccomended

Below is the HJT log after reboot.

I currently keep getting popups advertising spyware removal and my homepage is set to about:blank

I seem to be able to stop this behaviour somewhat by using HJT to fix the references to about:blank, sp.html & se.dll. I also can (in this case) fix the reference to lhid.dll. However after a while (can be as little as minutes) the popups start again. When I use HJT there is a now a different dll I need to remove

Nick

LD

I'm afraid I've had mixed success with the steps you outlined

I downloaded and ran CWShredder and AboutBuster OK (although I rebooted after running CWShredder to remove all the entities)

I cleaned out the files in safe mode

However I had problems with Housecall. Firstly since I have SP2 installed the popups were blocked, consequently I'm not sure if the ActiveX stuff downloaded OK. Secondly it looks like the Housecall site has changed since you sent out your instructions - there are now more options (virus scan, security scan etc.). Finally however IE kept crashing when Housecall tried to update it's scan engine.

I attach the AboutBuster and latest HJT logs.

Hope you can help

Nick

I suggest you do this:

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe
O8 - Extra context menu item: LimeShop Preferences - file://C:\Program Files\LimeShop\System\Temp\limeshop_script0.htm

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Search for and Delete these Folders if present
limeshop
limewire

Search for and delete these Files if present.
limeshop.exe
popup.exe

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY Listed Profile USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
LD

I worked through your procedure. I took the liberty of uninstalling LimeWire (a peer-to-peer filesharing utility) before deleting the folders and files you suggested.

After rebooting I got the following error message

RUNDLL
Error Loading c:\documen~1\default\locals~1\temp\se.dll
The specified module could not be found

My suspicions currently lay upon the following line in the HJT log

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sp] rundll32 C:\DOCUME~1\default\LOCALS~1\Temp\se.dll,DllInstall

HJT doesn't seem to be able to remove this no matter how many times I try to fix it.

However I currently don't have any popup problems - but I've been here before :-(

Cheers

Nick

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare AboutBuster for use:
    • Download AboutBuster.
    • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
    • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
    • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
    • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
    • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  • Run CWShredder:
    • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
    • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
    • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
    • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
  • Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
    • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the directions Read: Important! prompt.
    • Click "Start" and then "OK" to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
    • Click "Yes" at the About:Buster prompt to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
    • Please wait while AboutBuster scans your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
    • When it has finished, click "Save Log…". Make sure you save it as I will need a copy of it.
    • Click "Exit" and "Exit" again to exit AboutBuster.
  • Clean out temporary files:
    • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
    • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
    • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.

  • Click HERE to download DllCompare. Start the Program with and click the Run Locate.com - be sure the \Windows\System32 directory is in the box and wait until the the blue text says it has 'completed the scan'.

Click the Compare button to start the next process. The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist', files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'. Very few files should be listed in the lower pane when the Compare scan is complete. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button and post the log here in this thread along with the HijackThis log and AboutBuster log.

    Post ALL 3 logs please.

I suggest you do this:

Download Ad-Aware from my signature below. Don't run it yet.

Run HijackThis again and put a check by these.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sp] rundll32 C:\DOCUME~1\default\LOCALS~1\Temp\se.dll,DllInstall

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Search for and delete these files if listed:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\reskpem.dll

LD

Followed your latest procedure.
I couldn't find the reskpem.dll

However things seem to be working more or less OK for the past 24 hrs.
My anti-virus software keeps detecting a Trojan, but seems to be dealing with it OK.

I'll keep monitoring the situation

Thanks for the help

Nick

I have Norton Antividus running.

It keeps finding Trojan.StartPage.M and deletes the following files

c:\Documents and Settings\default\Local Settings\Temp\m[1].bin
c:\Windows\system32\cla.dll

This seems to happen when I first open IE after booting up

Nick
Run Hijack This again and put a check by these.

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
