I'd appreciate help with this. None of my regular programs found this LOP thing but system has been running slowly despite removal of lots of extras etc. I seemed to have removed it once because the next scan didn't find it. The next one did again (2 times out of 4 scans). Not sure what's going on.

System is Win 98 SE with IE 5.1 and Firefox l.0.l I use Firefox to access internet unless IE is absolutely required. Have NOD 32 AV, spyware blaster, ad aware SE, Sygate Pro firewall.

TIA

SandiB
Hello SandiB , Welcome to the forum.

This is what I suggest you do.

Open Spybot S&D, click Mode>Advanced>Tools>Resident and remove the check from the Tea Timer box. You can reinstate it later but we don't want it interfering with what we need to do. Reboot when done.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks for the assist, LDTate but this is what's happening: I don't use Tea Time as it conflicts…turned everything on to do the hijack report but it's off, I checked to make sure. CWshredder found nothing. Went to each of the three online scans and NONE of them will scan my system. Trend is a 404 (normally I run Trend monthly or if needed without problems), eTrust insists I don't have something they need, Panda doesn't do anything…just sits. I do have activeX and java turned off…could this be the problem? I turned off everything else, including my sygate firewall to do things. I even tried eTrust using IE instead of Firefox to no avail. It seems to fail to load completely…just sits and blinks waiting for server BUT my Sygate Firewall shows constant in and out valid/approved activity when I try eTrust and that happens. I completely updated and ran Spyware Blaster (new version), Spybot S&D, and Lavasoft Ad Aware SE last night before bed and nothing was found there either. Don't know where to go with what now. Is it possible I had a corrupted download of Spyware Doctor trial and thus the inconsistent results? Are CWS and Lop different things? Thanks for your help. Any further suggestions? SandiB
It's not going to do a copy paste no matter what I try so, thanks for your efforts for now. I'm going to shut it down, do a complete check inside and see if something is undone or not working right. Will post here when I can get the thing to work. Don't want to waste any more of your time right now. SandiB
Go into DOS, and at the C: type in scanreg /restore. Note the space.
It will prompt you for your choice of registry to restore. Pick a date of a registry that used to work properly. Then you'll be prompted to reboot.

Success at last. WHEW! Here's the new one. I had to close all the extras in order to keep enough resources to do this. Thanks for any and all help.

Scanreg/restore doesn't go back far enough for a decent re-do. I tried that when this whole thing first started over a week ago and it didn't help but thanks for the suggestion.

There wasn't a bouncer file to be found. All else went as expected. I did not have to remove things to get it to copy/paste this time. Seems to be acting fairly normal at the moment although I haven't tried it out much yet. Booted faster even with all the things usually unchecked, checked in start up. Thanks!

SandiB.

open C:\WINDOWS\TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES\CONTENT.IE5\Delete all files and folders.
Did as you requested. Was surprised to see that 04…there as I deleted it the first time. Oh, well. There could've been two copies since I had two different versions in at one time. No such folder ….content.IE5 one in C:windows\temporary internet files\ The other one was already empty from previous time. Computer seems livelier at least and I'm not getting weird things happening. Are we finished or is there more we need to do? If so, could we pick it up later? (You say when and I'll be here). I've been at this computer since 4:00 A.M. and I'm beat. Thanks for your patience and help. SandiB

There you go. I did catch a brief nap which helped.

To configure Windows to show all files

1.In Windows 98/Me/2000, on the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.

2.In Windows 98, on the View menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.

3.Do one of the following:
In Windows 98, in the Advanced Settings box, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show all files.
Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders.

If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Dont_Miss_A_Thing] C:\WINDOWS\TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES\CONTENT.IE5\SXY3K9E7\ALERT[1].EXE

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Search for SXY3K9E7 and delete it.
