MS Confirms Problem…MS05-002 Patch For Windows 98, Me
- http://www.techweb.com/wire/security/159907205
March 28, 2005
"…Microsoft has received reports about issues with KB891711 on Windows 98, Windows 98 SE and Windows ME," wrote Jerry Bryant for the Microsoft Security Response Center (MCSE). "At this point, we have been able to confirm these reports and are currently working on a resolution." According to other posters on the discussion groups, the problem is one of long standing, involves Internet Explorer, and can cause the machine to hang or dramatically slow down after the patch is applied.

While Microsoft didn't explicitly tell users to roll back the patch, the message did continue with, "Please note that by uninstalling the current update, the machine will return to a vulnerable state. At this point, we are currently not aware of customers being exploited by way of the vulnerability fixed in MS05-002 on Windows 98, Windows 98 SE and Windows ME." Users who need additional assistance can call Microsoft at [removed] – the company's PCSAFETY line – for free help with any security update…"

"…FAQ related to this security update…Why was this security bulletin updated on April 12, 2005?
After the release of the MS05-002 security bulletin, Microsoft became aware of an issue affecting customers deploying the Windows 98, 98SE and ME security update. In most cases, the issue caused machines to unexpectedly restart.
Microsoft has investigated this issue and has made available revised security updates for these platforms. These revised security updates are available from Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center. Customers who have not yet applied the original version of these updates should visit Windows Update to receive the revised updates.
Customers who have already applied the original Windows 98, 98SE and ME security update are advised to install the current revision of the update from Windows Update…"

I would be one such customer, and I can assure you that installing the current revision of that update did nothing to solve the problem on my W98SE system. I'm still experiencing a freeze-up of my desktop upon loading, and that only by unchecking that update in msconfig via 'safe mode' permits windows to load. This is exactly the same problem I had with the original update.

Prior to installing the revised update I did uninstall the old one via add/remove.

Until such time as someone can explain the nature of the problem /conflict with that update, I have no intention of trying to install it again. It addresses a potential vulnerability that has not even been reported as a problem, and my system was trouble-free for a long time til that update came along…
Thanks AplusWebMaster: I have ascertained that the revised update was conflicting with an outdated version of my ZoneAlarm firewall. Since updating ZA to the latest version, the problem has been resolved.
