:weee:

EM

Many thanks for all the wonderful help.
Ernie,

What we did in the begining when I had you install SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY, we locked down the Hosts file from being changed, this is most likely why you got the error message. So what you need to do is Open the SPYBOT program, go to TOOLS/ HOSTS FILES and click up at the top to REMOVE THE SPYBOT HOSTS FILES, then go to TOOLS/ IE TWEEKS and take the checkmark out of LOCK THE HOSTS FILES.

Then open up HJT and run a SCAN ONLY and put a checkmark in the following entries and click on FIX CHECKED

O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 auto.search.msn.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 search.netscape.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch

Now run the HOSTER program to RESTORE ORIGINAL HOSTS.

Then post a new HJT log and if all is well, we are going to go back into SPYBOT TOOLS/ HOSTS FILES and add the SPYBOT HOSTS FILES , then to IE TWEEKS and put the checkmark back in to LOCK THE HOSTS FILES.

Then run HJT and post a new log please.

Got it done. Remove the Spybot hosts files (had an error message) 5 times, then I ran Tools/ IE tweeks Lock The Host Files [ ] was empty. Got an OK
Ran HJT Scan only, Fix Checked, OK. Ran Hoster, Restore Original Hosts OK.

Ernie, Forgot to mention that before the fix listed above, you also have to disable WinPatrol, just right click it in the System Tray and click on Exit Program.

Are we getting close to killing this bug yet?

Do I send the email to

[removed] ?

Or do you?

This C++ Explorer runtime error seems to be a beast…

Many Thanks.
EM
Ernie, Go ahead and send him the error report, he does a lot for the Malware removal people. Your log is looking much better. I am going to go over it and be back to you shortly. In the meantime, let me know how your computer is running and any Malware related problems that you may still be having.
Ernie, Your log looks free of any Malware or Viruses. After I hear from you, I will have you install some free programs that will block a lot of this garbage from installing in the first place, but before I do, I want to hear from you as to how your system is running.
 Well how I found the problem in the first place was by running McAfee Virus Scan AOL 9.0 se. I just ran it again, and the file still shows up. C:\Windows\hosts Potentially unwanted program Program name Redirected Hosts. Now the speed of the computer has gotten much better, but I'm still only running systray, and winpatrol from the startup menu. I'll try running the AOL 9.0 se with all the start up's added. And if it runs any better I'll post back with that news. I sent the email to [removed] reporting the error #75 I received. If you'll go back a few posts I had a few questions, listed. If anyone can clear them up for me. That would be great. A donation will be in the mail… Many thanks, EM
 I'm loged on with AOL 9.0 Security Edition LE. It's much faster then before. Now I need those protection programs. Many many thanks. EM
 Well, just as I hit [Post Reply] the system locked up. I'm back on with AOL 7.0. If you could answer these few questions. I should be better able to figure out what's keeping me, from having the (speed) this system once had. I say that with a smile. Each time I log on with AOL 9.0 in the Win.ini it updates the AOL start up group. Which slows the system down to a crawl. I run msconfig and click on the two that are listed under AOL 7.0 start up. Also the other error message regarding (REM) line loading device drivers into upper memory blocks using DEVICEHIGH statements. There's nothing to edit and the config.sys box is shaded gray. As well as the Autoexe.bat box. Start, click RUN, msconfig OK, Start up menu when I use AOL 7.0 [x] Process system [x] Process win [x] load start up group [ ] config.sys (empty) nothing to edit [ ] autoexe.bat (empty) nothing to edit these are the only two I have checked, in the start up menu list. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [x] system tray [x] Winpatrol -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Using these two only, I'm able to log on and receive email. And the systems speed is normal. I still have no graphics in email, when I link onto a site, then I'll see graphics. But there very slow to load. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- When I use AOL 9.0 se [x] Process system [x] Process win [x] load start up group [ ] config (empty) [ ] Autoexe.bat (empty) These are what AOL 9.0 se adds to the start up list, and the system runs very slow. Graphics load one icon at a time. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= [x] system tray [x] Winpatrol [x] McVsRte [x] Host Manager [x] AOL Fast Start [x] AOL CC [x] AOL Dialer [x] Mc Update [x] Mc Agent [x] Virus Scan [x] Aol Top Speed [x] AOL Acc Daemon1 I've tried removing just the McAfee's from the list but the system was just as slow. That's why I believe I need more RAM memory to be able to RUN AOL 9.0 se, as well as the rest of the programs on that Start up list. -=-=-=-=-=—=–=-=-=– My question is, what is the normal start up list for windows 98? RUN msconfig. What "should" be checked to run at start up? And how do I edit the config.sys so that I can add the DEVICEHIGH statements to load EMM386.exe driver. Config.sys, window is empty! And the check box is shaded gray, I don't have access to the check box, to be able to edit it and add the line DEVICEHIGH=EMM386.exe Is that normal? totally dazed and confused. ;P EM
Ernie,

This evening as soon as I get home from work, I am going to give you some links to install programs that will stop a lot of the garbage from installing. I know that your system is older and it looks like you have the original version of Windows 98, and the amount of ram you have installed would still be somewhat borderline even with Win 95. I 'm sure that is part of the freeze problem you are having. As far as what should start up with 98, I am really not an expert in that department, we only do virus and malware removal at TC. I am going go give you a few links to some excellent tech support sites that specialize in Harware and Software problems. I'm sure that you can find the help you need there for your system. There all free sites and are run by very knowledgable people. I had a minor video problem on my system that I lived with for a few months and I posted the problem and had an answer in about 20 minutes.

This one is the best on the planet..

You can try this forum here at TC

So check back a little later and I will post those programs you need.
Ernie,

After rereading an earlier post, I forgot about the file that McAfee found. I know your tired of running scans, but give these programs a try

Please scan with Stinger >>>>> http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Nothing to install here, just download it to your desktop and run the scan, let me know what it found and if it deleted it.

Then download CCleaner from here >>>> http://www.ccleaner.com/

Then open ccleaner and click on run cleaner.

Next

Please download MicroWorld scanner from the link below. Make sure that you choose all files and directories. I warn that the scan will take a long time and will not fix anything. Once the scan is completed in the LOWER box hilight all the files there then copy (ctrl +c) and paste it into the thread please.

Here is a tutorial for running McAfee, I don't know what version you have, but there is a box to put a checkmark in for Potentially Unwanted Programs and have it delete it if it can.
