Hi, Cannot delete rpcss_pl.exe in the command prompt. It say it is being used and can't be deleted. Also the option to stop the service is greyed out and can't be done. Anything else?
If you get the same error in step 2, continue on to the next step.

Step 1:

Please download this tool called 'About:Buster':

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip

Unzip it to your desktop.

Unzip AboutBuster to the Desktop and have it ready to run, but don't run it yet.

Open AboutBuster
-Click OK to the Read dialogue
-Click the Update button, and then select: Check for Update
Exit from the program, and do not run AboutBuster yet.

DO NOT relaunch Internet Explorer at any point during this.

Step 2:
Click Start>Run and type in: services.msc
-Click OK
-In the Services window find: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper
-Select/highlight and right click the entry, and choose: Properties
-On the General tab, under Service Status click the Stop button
-Beside: Startup Type, in the drop menu, select: Disabled
-Click Apply, then OK

Do not select the following Services, they are legit!!
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator

Step 3:
Next, open HijackThis
Click on: Config
Click on: Misc Tools
Click on: Delete an NT Service
In the prompt: Delete an NT Service copy/paste: RPCSS+
Press: Enter
Press: OK

If entering: RPCSS+ does not work, then copy/paste: RPC+ Service Provider

Step 4:
Run a HijackThis Scan.
Check box and select Fix Checked on the following:

O23 - Service: RPC+ Service Provider (RPCSS+) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\rpcss_pl.exe

Step 5:
Reboot to Safe Mode

Step 6:
Search for, and if found, delete the following file (bold):
C:\WINDOWS\System32\rpcss_pl.exe

Step 7:
Now, go back to AboutBuster once again
-Click Start to begin the process
-Click OK on the Buster Report dialogue box to start the scan

AboutBuster scans the computer for malicious files and deletes them.
Now sign off the internet and remain offline until this procedure is complete. Copy these instructions to notepad and save them on your desktop for easy access.

Reboot:

Once rebooted run about:Buster once more to make sure everything is ok.
The database will be updated very frequently so check your versions once a day.

Once the tool is done scanning, copy the log and save it to paste back here in your thread. Save the report (copy and paste into Notepad and save as a .txt file) to post a copy for review.

When done with the above, also post a new HijackThis log for review.

Thank you.

Hi LDTate,

I encountered the following problems:
- During step 2 i couldn't find a file called Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper
- When trying to delete an NT Service in HJT it wouldn't let me delete RPCSS+ as it was enabled and/or running. It also told me that RPC+ Service Provider was not found in the registry.
- I could not delete C:\windows\system32\rpcss_pl.exe

Here are my HJT and AboutBuster logs:
