Startpage_du.dll Help

Friend's computer has the StartPage_DU.dll virus and I can't seem to clean it. Used McAfee, Spybot, Adaware, and Microsoft's Anti-spyware program. Virus is not detected in Window XP's safe mode, but appears upon reboot in standard mode. Deleting all old restore points did not help. McAfee detects StartPage_DU.dll and se.dll but is unable to delete or repair.

Please help as this is driving us nuts!
Download FxAgentB.exe from http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FxAgentB.exe and save it to your desktop. After downloading, double-click the FxAgentB file to run it and the program will scan your entire hard drive - this may take a while. When it is done, it will generate a log file called FxAgentB.log - save that information as you will need to paste it here later. Reboot when done.

Next click http://www.soft32.com/download-CWShredder-19014-5.html to download CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom and run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. If you already have CWShredder, click 'Check for update' and make sure you are running version 2.12 . Reboot when done.

Then click http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ to download Ad-Aware SE and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Click "Start", select "Perform Full System scan" and "Next" to start the scan. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".

Reboot when done, rescan with HijackThis and post a new log here, together with the FxAgentB log.
Alrighty! I had my friends do your posted list of instructions and here are the logs they emailed me.

se.dll doesn't show in the above log, but that is because the user didn't open IE before the run. As soon as IE is opened, se.dll appears (as is seen in the first log in post #1).

Thanks for your help!
Scan with CWsredder choosing fix.

Scan with hijackthis and put a check beside these lines and choose FIX

Yippee! What a pain in the butt hijacker that was.
Looks good :D

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. In my signature below is also a tutorial on how to harden IE, a good read and very helpful to stop these things in the future. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on.

Safe Surfing. :D
