hello TRIPP:

you have quite a collection, heres what i suggest:

first look in add/remove programs panel and uninstall any toolbars or search tools that may be listed. if you uninstall anything reboot computer afterwards.

next if you havent yet, download, install, update and run these two:

ad aware SE personal edition:
http://www.lavasoft.de/

Spybot - Search & Destroy from
http://security.kolla.de
—————————————-
also there is anewer version of hjt out now:

—–>go here http://www.subratam.org and under Removal Tools link find and download—-> Hijackthis.
Dont run it from within the zip file. Extract to a folder such as c:\Antispyware\Hijackthis\ or c:\Program Files\Hijackthis\ but not on your Desktop or a temporary folder.
This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary and prevent it from being deleted when the temporary folders are cleaned out or creating its backup(s) or backup folder on the Desktop.

Once you have hijackthis.exe in it's permanent folder:
Start the program
Press Scan.
After the scan- the Scan button will change to a Save Log button.Save the log somewhere like your desktop.
Most of the log is harmless.dont fix anything yet.
copy/paste the saved log in your next reply and we will see whats left…………

shelf life
Did as you suggeted Shelflife, below is updated logfile; hopefullt this one is not locked:
Thanks….

rescan with hjt post new log, went through this fast have to go to work…..shelf life

shelf life merged the two posts
Shelflife: Thanks for your expert reply. Before I start, I just want to make sure that I have a recoverable HiJack file on my C Drive..I keep getting a locked file log symbol when I post it on this site. On my C FDrive, I have a folder C:\Antispyware and I have the following files in the folder: hijackthis (Notepad symbol) Text Document 11KB HijackThis(Dynamite symbol) Company:Soeperman Enterprises, Ltd. File Version: 1.99.0.1 Date Created 2/25/2005 9:26am Size 213KB hijackthis(zipper symbol)Type: Compressed(zipped)Folder Date Modified 2/25/2005 9:25am Size 207 KB hijackthis4(lightswitch symbol) Type:File Date Modified 2/25/2005 9:28am Size 10.9KB I thought that the dynamite file is the correct one that contains the HiJack exe command, but I keep getting the locked symbol when I post. I just want to make sure that I have recoverable file if I screw this up especially if I turn off the System Restore command. I had set up a System Restore before I started the HiJack process because that was what I read in PC World to make sure to do in case of a problem with HiJack this. Your directions were very clear and I'm willing to give it a shot but if you think I'm too much of a newbee to do this, let me know. Thanks again. TRIPP
hello TRIPP, your good to go, hjt is in its own folder in case we have to restore anything. the reason for disabling system restore is because stuff can get archived in there, so lets say you clean up your computer then next month do a restore, uh oh. also malware programs like spybot and your antivirus can flag stuff in the archives. once your computer is clean we will turn it back on. and make a new clean restore point. looks like you may hvae 2 versions of hjt, we will use the v1.99 Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 the "dynamite file" is the one to use you can delete this older version if you want to: Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.7 not sure whats with the locked file log, you mean when you post here? i saw both your topics and merged them, they looked ok to me. go ahead and give it a shot, just follow directions, take your time, practise first if you want—browse for a few of the 04 files, see if you can find them, but dont delete them until your in safe mode. looks like most are in–C:\WINDOWS\System32 you can search by right clicking on start>explore, windows explorer opens, to the left are the directories, click the plus signs, then the folders themselves, the contents of the folders will be in the right pane. at the top go to View>details, then back in the right pane if you click on name at the top, everything will sort alpabeticlly. let me knoe if you have any problems/questions ………..shelf life
Hi Shelflife… Thanks for the suggestion to practice or preview… When I looked up some of the files, many now have mutated into multiple files with similar names with a date created on the last day or two since this started. For example, winupdt now is 2 files with that name and a third with windupdt8-do I delete all three now, or just the one?…I presume all three since they were created yesterday or today. Similarly "nwbgdc.exe" is not there, but "nwbgd" and nwbgdd", "nwbgde" and "nwbgdf" are now there. A few are no longer there, like "savbqq.exe" and "elitefjg32.exe" and "sfita.exe" with no similar name around it. Maybe the Ad-aware, Spy Bot and Norton run subsequently zapped them? So, if you can let me know whether to delete the similar named files like those above, I'll give it a shot in the morning. Also would like your opinion on how long this type of problem generally takes to clear up…are ther multiple runs through HiJack this requiring days of work to eventually wipe out? If so, I might just bring iyt in to a local computer company (they say $39 for spyware cleanup + $69 to clear up in 24 hours)..I need this computer to do my work at home( I'm a teacher) and can't be down for many days…but sure would like to give this a try if you think it can be resolved over the weekend… Thanks again for your time and efforts.. TRIPP
hello TRIPP, what i would do is follow the directions, then rescan and post anew hjt log. then there will be new directions. there still could be more to do, sometimes it may take several attempts to clean up a computer, some may also (not necessarily yours) require other tools to download. yes its possible it could go afew days. iam only on maybe ahour or so a day, we may also be in different time zones. its possible that ad aware and spybot have removed some thing s also. that local computer company uses the same stuff we do, i could clean your computer quickly if i had accsess to it also, but i dont, i also dont charge anything. up to you.
Hi Shelflife: Thanks for your reply. The ads are getting worse and it is harder and harder to type in keystrokes without getting interrupted, which makes fixing this on my end more difficult. Combined with my tight timing problems, I think I'm going to give the PC Club up the street a try…if for any reason they are unsucessful, I will certainly come back to this forum and would greatly appreciate your assistance again. I can't believe you guys do all this for free…I will make a donation as indicated on the site.. By the way, my name is Vic, my email address is [removed] and I live in Los Angeles. I'll probably have no computer for the next day or so, but I will go onto the forum to let you know the status when I get the computer back. Again, thanks so much for your time and efforts on my behalf. I wish I could return the favor. Vic
hello TRIPP,

usually we like posters to apply fixes as soon as possible as a compromised computer can get worse over time. its not a good idea to post your email address in a forum —- look— let me know how things turn out. i leave you with this:

Please follow a few tips to remain malware free:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
occasionaly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

Also download, install and keep updated- Antivirus Software (and use only one):
Free for home users:
avast! 4 Home Edition Download
AVG free version 7.0 AVG free version v6.0 updates ended 12/31/04
AntiVir Personal Edition

Adjust your browser settings: Change your(active x) settings in IE. With IE open go to tools, internet options, security tab. Click on the internet globe, then custom level. Set the first option "download signed active x controls" to prompt, the next two to disable. Read more:
Internet Explorer Privacy & Security Settings
Working with Internet Explorer 6 Security
Many exploits are directed at Internet Explorer, you dont have to use it. Try a different browser:
Like Firefox,
And Pegasus Mail for a safer e-mail client.

Install a firewall. A firewall will control what comes in from the internet and what leaves your computer to the internet. A firewall will also alert you when a application trys to connect to the internet from your computer, this is a good way to catch crapware or trojans, trying to connect out bound from your computer- whats that and why does it need a internet connection? You can deny it access it until more investigation is done. Zone Alarm is a free and easy to use firewall, that will provide in and outbound protection. Microsoft XP firewall only provides inbound protection. SP2 adds in and out bound protection which is better than nothing, but is not as robust as third party firewalls, Be sure to run only >one< firewall. If you use another, be sure to disable XP's built in firewall.A inexpensive NAT hardware router with SPI (firewall)would be even better, along with a software firewall.
Zone Alarm
Kerio Personal Firewall
Outpost Firewall

Download, install and update before using:(if these are constantly finding malware, then you need to make some changes)
Ad-Aware SE Personal edition
Spybot Search and destroy
Becarful with spyware "removers and scanners"– there are many "rogue/suspect" programs that "claim to remove" spyware.

Other programs to consider:
SpywareBlaster
IE-SPYAD
AntiTrojan software to fill in the gap:
a2 free
Ewido Security Suite
Trojan Hunter (30 day trial version)

Watch what you download, and where you download it from. Many programs come bundled with "extra" crapware you may not want. Make sure you know what it is you will be downloading and installing. Visit the makers website, learn more about the program, Does the program you want come bundled with other "3rd party" programs? What do the 3rd party programs do? Will they deliver ads? Track your surfing habits?.You may be installing more than you think, Read the EULA agreement, you know that paragraph of stuff you "agree to" before the software installs? Stay away from warez and crack sites. Becarful what you download from file sharing networks. If you are not sure, scan it with your Antivirus app. A small file (in KB) is probably not what you think it is. Some p2p clients also install 3rd party stuff you probably dont want.If you search hard enough you can usually find a "clean" alternative to any software.
