Backdoor Haxdoor.av was also detected on my PC. I used the instructions posted and ran Hijack This on the PC. No files came up to be fixed and the virus was not removed. Any ideas as to what I did wrong?

Here is a copy of the startup log and scan log:

Hi Paul

The only thing you did wrong was to get infected by a new and fairly nasty version of Haxdoor called Horseserver or Klikfeed. There is no program that gets rid of it yet that I know of. We will have to do it manually.

RED or UNDERLINED words are links that can be clicked.

HOW TO Instructions: This is where you find instructions or references for a number of common tasks. If you do not know how to do something then try to find it in this part.

Should you need instructions for:
Showing hidden files and folders in Windows.
Reboot in safe mode. If you have a keyboard with a "F Lock" key click it so that the "F" light above it is on when you start tapping the "F8" key.
How to print the fix instructions
Click the red links above.

How to unzip a downloaded zip file.
Place the zip file in the folder where you want the unzipped program to be.
If you are running Windows XP you simply right click the zip file and select "Extract Files".
For the other versions of Windows you will need a program like 7-Zip . Open 7-Zip. Navigate to to the downloaded zipfile and highlight it. Right click and select "Extract Here"

When asked to post a new HijackThis log please
Close all windows and browsers.
Find the HijackThis folder. Open it and double click "HijackThis.exe". Click "Do a system scan" and save a "logfile". (If Hijack this shows you a "Scan" button instead of "Do a system scan" that is OK. Just click it.)
When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Click it. Click "Ctrl-A" (the "Ctrl" key and the "A" key at the same time) to highlight the whole log. Now click "Ctrl-C" to copy the text. Open this topic and click the "Add Reply" button at the bottom of the page. Paste the log into the window that opens up by clicking "Ctrl-V". Click "Add Reply" to post.

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL INSTRUCTED TO DO SO. SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO YOUR COMPUTER'S HEALTH

Preliminaries:

1. Please copy the instructions to a notepad or preferably print them.

2. Make sure to work through the fixes exactly as given and in the exact order they are mentioned below.

3. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

4. Configure Windows to show all files.

Start the cleanup:

5. A stated above you have a Hi user,

You have a Horseserver infection which requires some tools to get rid of.
  • First, download HSFix from here
  • After it is downloaded, create a new folder on your desktop called "HSFix" and extract all the files into the newly created folder.
  • Next, download CleanUp! Install it, but do not run it yet.
  • Boot into safe mode: Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
  • Locate the HSFix folder on your desktop, open it, and double-click "hsfix.bat"
  • A log will be produced which you can close out of.
  • Then run HijackThis again, close any open windows and browsers and fix these:

E
Elrod,

Thanks for the response. I followed your instructions and all looked ok at first. I only found the first 7 virsus lines you noted in your response and deleted all of them. I went to Trendmicro and ran the Housecall scan, which came up with no virus found. However, I have PC Cillin resident on my PC and it came up with Backdoor Haxdoor.av found. I then went to CA and ran their scan. It came back with 66 instances of infection: Haxdoor.P, Haxdoor.O, Win32.Tibsder.G and Win32.SillyDI.

Here are the logs you requested in your first response: HSFix log and a HijackThis log created after the deletions, Trendmicro and CA scans.

Any ideas???

Elrond, First, sorry for mispelling your name in the last reply. I was able to find some additional directions from Trendmicro that called for manually deleting the lines of code that were planted by these Haxdoor viruses. I also did additional scans at CA and Pandasoftware and between all four approaches was able to eliminate all of the viruses. Thanks much for your help!
Hi Paul

It is not idea that you are trying to clen up your computer while we are working on it.

Ther are many different Haxdoors. TrendMicro still does not have this version in their descriptions.

By trying to clean it by your self if you do not know exactly what you are doing you can make it much more difficult to clean up the infection by mask the infection that is still there. Once I give you the all clear you will need to change your passwords as this version of Haxdoor probably steals passwords.

Now let's repeat the fix for Horseserver once more to get rid of the last part of the infection.
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdStatus Service] C:\Program Files\AdStatus Service\AdStatServ.exe
    O18 - Filter: text/html - {B72F75B8-93F3-429D-B13E-660B206D897A} - (no file)
    O18 - Filter: text/plain - {B72F75B8-93F3-429D-B13E-660B206D897A} - (no file)
  • Run CleanUp! and let it clean your computer of temp files. Decline when it asks you to log off.
  • Use Windows Explorer to delete the following folder
    C:\Program Files\AdStatus Service
  • Restart your computer into normal mode and run at least one of the following free, online virus scans:
    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co…n_principal.htm
    http://www3.ca.com/threatinfo/virusinfo/scan.aspx
  • Restart your computer one last time and post a new HijackThis log, as well as the HSFix log which is located at C:/hslog.txt
Here are the results of the last clean up.

None of the lines noted in your post were detected by HJT. Pandasoftware did not find any infections. CA found two; here is a log of the scan

Scan Results: 60147 files scanned. 2 viruses were detected.

Hi Paul :wavey:

We are making headway. The dangerous infection that steals passwords seems to be gone. :) To be sure I will ask you to run a scan a little bit later.

The stuff the virus scans show we will take care of once your computer is clean. The stuff is in the Windows restore and does no harm if you do not use Windows Restore. I do not like to do anything about it until we are finished. If something goes wrong with the fixes it is better to have an infected restore point than none at all.

Now to try to get rid of the very persistent infection :( that you have on your computer.

1. Open HiJackThis, click "Open the Misc Tools Section", and click "Delete a file at reboot". This will open a window. Navigate to C:\Program Files\AdStatus Service\AdStatServ.exe. Click it and then click "Open". You will be asked if you want to reboot now. Click "Yes".

2. When the computer closes down please restart it in Safe Mode.

3. Open HijackThis and click "Do a System Scan Only". (If HijackThis shows a "Scan" button instead of "Do a System Scan Only" that is OK. In that case click "Scan".) When the scan is finished put a check mark by the items that are listed in bold below. If you can not find an item, that is OK. Just continue but inform me with your next post. Do not click fix until instructed to do so:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdStatus Service] C:\Program Files\AdStatus Service\AdStatServ.exe

CLOSE ALL PROGRAMS and BROWSERS that are running, except HijackThis and then click the "fix" button.

4. Use Windows Explorer to delete the folder C:\Program Files\AdStatus Service

5. Reboot in Normal Mode.

6. Open HiJackThis, click "Open the Misc Tools Section", and click "Generate StartupList log". Check mark "List also minor sections (Full)" Notepad will open with a log in it. Please add this log to your next post. (This is the scan I mentioned in the beginning of this post.)

7. * Close ALL windows except HJT
* SCAN with HJT
* POST the new log and the log from point 6 in this thread using "Add Reply" or "Post Reply".

:wavey: Hi Elrond,

Here are the latest results after following the last set of instructions.

I opened HJT and went to Program Files to delete AdStatus Service\AdStatServ.exe - nothing there

Started up in Safe Mode and removed O4-HKLM….

Went into Windows Explorer and searched for the folder AdStatus Service - nothing there

Started up the computer, ran HJT and created the two logs

Hi again Paul

Congratulations and well done , your log looks clean.

Now is the time to change your passwords that you have used on this computer. They could all be stolen by the people behind the infection that you had on your computer. :rant2:

Now that your computer is free of malware, I want you to take some precautions to avoid being re-infected. :D

This is generic information. If something does not pertain to your version of Windows please just skip that instruction.

Settings and maintenance

1. Clean out temporary files etc.
Download and install CCleaner
Under windows tab check the boxes next to the blue "internet explorer", "windows explorer", and "system".There will be other check marked boxes under them. That is OK
Click Run Cleaner.
You should do this every few weeks to avoid buildup of unnecessary junk.

2. Clean Out System Restore. (Only ME and XP)
Malware could get backed up in System Restore.
For Win XP follow these instructions to delete all restore points.
1. Go to "Start" > "Control Panel".
2. Make sure the Control Panel is in "Classic View". If it is not, click "Switch to Classic View" towards the top-left of the screen.
3. Double-click "System" and go to the "System Restore" tab.
4. Check "Turn off System Restore" and click "OK" and then "Yes".

After restarting your computer you should turn it back on by following the above procedure and uncheck "Turn off System Restore".

You can find out more about this subject at
Managing Windows Millennium System Restore

or at

How to turn off or turn on Windows XP System Restore

3. You reconfigured Windows to show hidden files and you should reset this to its original state useing the instructions from here except that
1. Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading put a mark for "Do not show hidden files and folders".
2. Uncheck "Display content of system folders"
3. Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.

4. Make your Internet Explorer more secure

a. Less restrictive but less secure:
Adjust your browser settings: Change your(active x) settings in IE. With IE open go to tools, internet options, security tab. Click on the internet globe, then custom level. Set the first option "download signed active x controls" to prompt, the next two to disable. Read more in
Internet Explorer Privacy & Security Settings
Working with Internet Explorer 6 Security
Many exploits are directed at Internet Explorer, you don't have to use it. Try a different browser like
Firefox . It is also worth trying
Thunderbird for controlling spam in your e-mail.

b. More secure but very restrictive.
This can be done by following these simple instructions that apply to all "Windows" except "Windows XP with SP2". In SP2 many of those setting are the default settings but check your settings anyhow. The settings can become restrictive but you should use them anyhow. If there are sites that will not show up right with those settings and that you rely on to be free of malware place them in the trusted zone.

1. Click "Start". Open "Control Panel".
2. Select the "Internet Options"
3. Select "Security" Tab and select the following settings.

* ActiveX controls and plug-ins
• Download signed ActiveX controls: Disable
• Download unsigned ActiveX controls: Disable
• Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe: Disable
• Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins: Disable
• Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting: Disable

* Downloads
• Font Download: Disable

* Microsoft VM
• Java permissions: Disable Java

* Miscellaneous
• Allow META REFRESH: Disable
• Display mixed content: Disable
• Drag and drop or copy and paste files: Disable
• Installation of desktop items: Disable
• Launching programs and files in an IFRAME: Disable
• Navigate sub-frames across different domains: Disable
• Software channel permissions: High Safety
• Userdata persistence: Disable

* Scripting
• Active scripting: Disable
• Allow paste operations via script: Disable
• Scripting of Java applets: Disable

* User Authentication
• Logon: Prompt for username and password

4. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
5. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
6. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

These are a must to protect yourself from malware.
1. Get a good anti-virus if you don't have one. A lot of people like AVG .
KEEP IT UPDATED

2. Get a good firewall if you don't have one.
Many like ZoneAlarm. You can download a free copy here

Be restrictive with access to the internet. If you are unsure if the program really needs the access, test it by denying the access and see if this has any negative effects. If not make the block permanent.

3. MOST IMPORTANT for all versions: You Need to keep “Windows” and "Internet Explorer” updated. Open ‘Internet Explorer” and go to”Start”> "Tools" > "Windows Update" or go to Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof you must keep it updated as well. Go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed. Update MS Office here.

4. Download and install “SpywareBlaster”
Run it. Click "Updates" at the left and click "Check for Updates". After updating click "Protection" at the left and towards the bottom click "Enable All Protection". You should now be protected from all known bad ActiveX. You should occasionally check for updates.

5. Download and install "SpywareGuard"

Further tools

I highly recommend downloading and installing the newest versions of “AdAware SE Personal” and “Spybot Search and Destroy”
After installing remember to update the definition files for each program.
I also suggest that you visit this website and follow the instructions on how to configure both programs for best detection. These instructions are the best even though they refer to a cleanup of an infected computer.

There are many other programs that will add extra layers of protection to your computer as well.
I recommend “IE-Spyad” By default, it is unzipped to "C:\ie-spyad". Find out how to install it by going to the "ReadMe.txt". You should occasionally get updates by using the bat file or by uninstalling and deleting the old files and returning to the site to get the new version.

A Trojan scanner would be also be helpful. You can download a trial version of “Trojan Hunter” and run it to remove any traces of trojans.

The ”a Squared” trojan Scanner has a free version. It is an onboard trojan scanner that is installed much like Spybot/AdAware but handles trojans. Nice to add to your armor if you wish.
Download free from “a Squared” (The download button is at the bottom of the page). Install it.
Run and activate your free version with a Squared and then select
Scan your computer for malware infections .
Then select any/all drives.
Finally Scan selected folders.

It is worth while to take a look at "So how did I get infected in the first place? for some good advice.

A good source of information about computer secutiy can be found at this website . ChrisRLG has been an Administrator and Classroom Teacher at Tom Coyote and today has his own forum.

(for Win XP with or without SP1) If you want to update Windows XP with SP2, you should know that there has been a small group of users who have had problems with it. The risks are the least if your computer is clean of malware and you are running an updated software firewall such as ZoneAlarm. You can download SP2 from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389
If you have a high-speed internet connection, you can let Windows Update do it. However if you have a dialup connection I would advise you to order the CD as the download is huge and will take a VERY long time to download. There has also been some reports that there is less problems when SP2 is installed from a CD.
You can get the CD here .

VERY IMPORTANT. Update all protective programs regularly - Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Do you have any problems with your computer? If so please post the details.

It has been a pleasure to help you. :)

Best of luck and clean computing :wavey:

Elrond, Thanks again for all of your help! This was a tough learning experience and I truly appreciate the guidance and patience. I've loaded SP2 and all the current updates on the MS security site and will review all of the recommendations you posted. Hopefully I won't need to come back for help, just for reviews and keeping up to speed on things. :)
