Computer Acting Very Strangely

For the last few days, my new (2 week old) computer has been having a lot of problems. Programs respond very slowly, it frequently freezes up and several
times I have been redirected to various different web sites when I opened Internet
Explorer. I've scanned with Ad-Aware SE Plus 1.05, Spybot Search and Destroy
1.3, Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta, and McAfee Virus Scan. They all had the latest
updates, and they all turned up nothing. The only thing that showed anything
was Panda Active Scan, which said I had 1 infected file and 1 suspicious file.
I could really use some help! Thanks!!!

Please download hoster from the link below.

Unzip Hoster.zip
Open Hoster.exe.

Then click on "Restore Original Hosts"

Close program when complete.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

My computer still seems to be responding a bit slowly. When I open Internet Explorer, it seems like another window flashes on the screen for a fraction of a second before IE comes up. This happens so fast that I can't tell what it is. Also, here is the log for my Panda ActiveScan:

This sort of surprises me. I never downloaded VirtualBouncer. Can this thing appear on your computer without actively downloading it? I did some research on manually deleting VirtualBouncer, but when I looked, I couldn't find any of the program files or registry keys that are supposed to be associated with it! I had windows set to show hidden files. Also, yesterday, when I opened Outlook Express, I discovered that all of the saved emails in my inbox had been deleted.

I don't see VirtualBouncer in your log.
You can do a search for it and delete if found.


It looks like you are running two Anti-Virus programs. That's not a goog idea. It can cause conflicts and look ups. I suggest you remove one of them


I suggest you do this:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"


1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files (If listed)
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

My computer is running faster. Everything seems to be back to about normal. How does my HJT log file look now? I have one other question. I didn't know about the problems associted with running more than on antivirus program. Thanks for the advice. I was actually running three: McAfee Antivirus, Microsoft AntiSpyware, and Panda TruPrevent. I disabled the real-time protection feature the Microsoft program. My question is about Panda TruPrevent. Panda describes
this program as being for users who already have a primary antivirus program. They say it is compatible with other programs, and works in the background, adding another layer of protection. Do you think it's OK to keep using Panda, or should I disable this too? If yes, sould something be done about the HJT items involving Panda. Again, many thanks!!!

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK




If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

I followed your instructions. Everything is running pretty slick. Good as (or maybe even better than) new. I took your advice and downloaded Spywareblaster, Spywareguard, and IESPY AD. I'm running McAfee Firewall and Antivirus, so I think I'm all set as far as that goes. Again, I'd like to thank you very sincerely for your help. I'm planning on making a donation to the forum. I think you guys perform a wonderful service to the public. Although this experience has been a royal pain in the @!#, I've learned a lot about many security issues that I never really knew existed. I'm just a horse trainer from Montana- that's my area of expertise- but if you ever have horse problems, or need some advice along those lines, I'd be very happy to help.
