I've tried running Housecall.TrendMicro and the browser keeps shutting down on me. Adaware and Spybot have not fixed the browser. Does Windows XP have a safe mode? Tried reading the other fixes to see if that helps but I'm not having any luck. Log has been posted. Any help is most appreciated!
Thanks for taking an interest. This morning I tried using IE but it would start up then shut down . . . can't get into it at all now. Using another computer to send this!

If you still can't get online, AboutBuster, CW-Shredder and cwsserviceremove will fit on floppys, do the best you can.

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please download and install these programs - don't run them yet!!

Please download and unzip
AboutBuster to a folder. Inside the folder is a readme file that has instructions on the use of the program.
AboutBuster MUST be updated before you use it.
Start AboutBuster, click the update button, check for update, drag the box to the side and hit download updates, close the box . Don't run it yet.

Download and unzip cwsserviceremove to your desktop. use link below:
http://lineofire.geekstogo.com/cwsserviceremove.zip

Download CW-Shredder at the link below:
http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Reboot into SafeMode. <—MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO DO THIS!!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here's the fix:

Important Step
1. Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:
Network Security Service (NSS)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

2. Reboot into Safe Mode

3. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once => Click Task Manager => Click the Processes tab => Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes => Scroll through the list and look for:

mfcyt32.exe
sdkwm32.exe

If you find the files, click on them, and then click End Process => Exit the Task Manager.

4. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND BROWSERS Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\svolp.dll/sp.html#28129

O23 - Service: Network Security Service (NSS) (%AF夶À¨) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\javajh.exe" /s (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

5. Delete the following files if present:

C:\WINDOWS\mfcyt32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\javajh.exe
C:\WINDOWS\svolp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntzs32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdkwm32.exe

(and any other files with the same name that end in .dll, .exe or .dat, you may find them right next to each other, example - appsw.exe, appsw.dll, appsw.dat)
If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

6. Run AboutBuster . This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. It will ask to scan the system again, let it. Save the report (copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

7. Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

8. Double click on the cwsserviceremove and when asked to merge say yes.

9. Run CW-Shredder - Hit the FIX button - let it run and fix what it finds.

10. Reboot into normal mode.

11. Download the Hoster from here http://members.aol.com/toadbee/hoster.zip. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

12. Download and run this online virus scan:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
Make sure you check "AutoClean"

13. Reboot and post a fresh HJT log back here by using the add reply button below, and lets see how we did, MrC
Mr C, I'm running just plain Xp and have also been having problems with the About:blank hijacker. Can I follow the same steps to fix the problem?
No, you have a different about blank, don't use this fix.

The forum is very busy, so just wait your turn - someone will get to you soon - there's many people before you - sorry but that's the way it is.
I'll edit your post so it reflects what the problem is.

Thanks, MrC
Sorry for the delay. The computer has a bug and then I caught one . . . and it put me out of commission for 24 hrs. Now I'm back . . .

The computer I'm having trouble with is the one I use at work. It's a network machine with files held for the use of other users. While in safemode I cut off the use of the drive from the 'boss' and she wasn't very happy about me screwing around with the company equipment. I had to reboot into normal mode before completing the About.Buster fix so she could access the files.

She would prefer that the 'system admin' fix this problem, but I know he's not going to have the depth of knowledge in this area that you do. I've got the browser back and the popups are gone as well! Still have the about:blank in the home page but it's working much better.

Since safemode can only be run 'after hours' can I run it in normal mode?

P.S.

How do you know so much about this??? I'm amazed. They don't teach this stuff in school. I took the MCSE classes and we never even touched on this stuff.

Thanks for all your help. I'll be happy to pass on further instuctions to the System Admin.
On a whim, I went to Internet Options in IE and changed the homepage from about:blank to my old one. Lo and behold it kept the change. So to check it again I closed IE and reopened it. My old homepage is BACK!!! :D I was asking earlier if I could run About.Buster in normal mode. . . I wasn't very explicit. Also ran hoster, but didn't reboot because of the file sharing issue discussed earlier. Mr. Charlie, you are Dah MAN!!! Thanks ever so much!!! The help is worth a donation!!!
OK, almost there.

We have to use a lttle app to clear out those 015s in the log that were put there by the hijacker:

Download this file to your desktop:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'

Once it is finished your Zones should be reset.

—————————————————————————

Close all programs down, leaving only HijackThis running.
Place a check against the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\svolp.dll/sp.html#28129
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\svolp.dll/sp.html#28129
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\svolp.dll/sp.html#28129
O23 - Service: Network Security Service (NSS) (%AF夶À¨) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\javajh.exe" /s (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Reboot……..

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we'll take another look.

How do you know so much about this??? I'm amazed. They don't teach this stuff in school. I took the MCSE classes and we never even touched on this stuff.
