I am using Windows XP Pro and use a Real Estate Appraisal software program that uses a 16-bit program. I started getting an error that states: 16-Bit MS-DOS Subsystem C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows Applications. I called the software maker and they said some sort of Spyware got to the autoexec.nt file So I had a co-worker of mine send me his autoexec.nt file. This did not solve the problem. So the Software maker (ACI) had me re-install the entire software hoping this would solve the problem. It did NOT. Now I cant even run the program to get to the part where I used to just get the 16-bit compatibility error. One thing I noticed is when I goto my Norton Protected Recycle Bin IMMEDIATELY after re-installing the software, something has immeditely deleted about 50-100 files that are probably integral in running my ACI program (So no wonder it wont run!). Now I have installed a few Spyware Programs recently (AD-Aware, Spybot, Tenebril Spycather, Counter-Spy) that have found and got rid of some spyware. I am concerned that one of them (Tenbril SpyCatcher) has deleted harmless files that IT considers suspiscious and has prevented them from ever being installed again! This is my guess why I see them in my recycle bin every time I re-install my ACI program. So..I uninstalled Spycatcher and unchecked anything from Sycatcher in my Startup (in MSCONFIG) but it still happens! I rebooted in Safe Mode, ran Ad-Aware and Spybot, rebooted. still happens. I ran the RAV Online scanner and it says it found Backdoor:Win32/Khazana.A -> Infected in a file but I cant seem to find any site that can help me remove this Virus. I am now at my wits end and would GREATLY appreciate any help!! Thanks in Advance! Here is my HijackThis Log…

I am using Windows XP Pro and downloaded Tenbril SpyCatcher which found some bad spyware, however, it has also found some files I apparently needed!!! I guess Spycatcehr thought they were "suspicious". I tried Re-install the files, however, to make matters worse, it appears Sycatcher is set to delete thses files upon re-installation…so Im stuck in a vicious circle. I try to re-install the needed files but then Spycatcher deletes them right away!!! Can someone please help me disable this feature of Spycatcher??

I am now at my wits end and would GREATLY appreciate any help!! Thanks in Advance! Here is my HijackThis Log…I alsoe have an RAV scan log which shows a virus at

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{E87A81FB-FDCF-4B92-A20C-951710F82D7C}\RP657\A0163673.exe->[inno.4] - Backdoor:Win32/Khazana.A -> Infected

Any idea how to get rid of this virus???

Can you uninstall SpyCatcher? And have you paid for it yet?

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{E87A81FB-FDCF-4B92-A20C-951710F82D7C}\RP657\A0163673.exe->[inno.4] - Backdoor:Win32/Khazana.A -> Infected

Any idea how to get rid of this virus???

Yes but we may need system restore.
will take care of it later also when did you first install SpyCatcher?
Thank you sooo much for helping….. I tried to uninstall Spycatcher once already but the problem still occurred…so I re-installed it thinking that there must be something in the program that I could check or uncheck to stop deleting these files…and no I havent paid for it yet.. I first Installed Spycatcher about 3-4 weeks ago…. and thanks again for helping me…
You are running windows XP which allows you to move to a old restore point. See if you have a restore point about a week before that. To do that hit Start>control panel>Preformanceand Manintence>System Restore click restore my computer to an earlier time.
is that the best option? dont I lose other stuff on other files that Ive dont since then??? Isnt there a way to delete some of the lines in the Hijack This log that pertain to Spycatcher?

Close all Browser and Program Windows and have HijackThis fix the following.
Do this by checking the box beside each and then clicking on Fix checked.

O2 - BHO: SpywareBlock Class - {0A87E45F-537A-40B4-B812-E2544C21A09F} - C:\Program Files\SpyCatcher\SCActiveBlock.dll

Reboot in SAFE MODE. If you don't know how click here

Delete the folder(s) listed
C:\Program Files\SpyCatcher

Some of these files and folders might have the hidden atribute

Reboot and Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
ok did all that and heres my new HJT log…and my computer seems to run pretty good…expect for the fact that when I try to reinstall my ACI Program the files get immediately deleted…but now with your help Im hoping that wont be a problem anymore….let me know when I should try to reinstall it now that weve deleted the line in HJT….

I notice in my HJT log the very last line refers to Spycatcher (with the file now missing)…can I delete that line too in HJT just so Its not even on there?

Yes

let me know when I should try to reinstall it

now will be fine.

Please follow a few tips to remain malware free:

1) Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update occasionaly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Also download, install and keep updated- Antivirus Software (and use only one):
Free for home users:
http://www.avast.com/eng/free_virus_protectio.html
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ AVG free version v6.0 updates end 12/31/04>>>get new (still free) version 7.0
http://www.free-av.com/

2) Watch what you download, and where you download it from. Many programs come bundled with "extra" crapware you may not want. Make sure you know what it is you will be downloading and installing. Visit the makers website, learn more about the program, Does the program you want come bundled with other "3rd party" programs? What do the 3rd party programs do? Will they deliver ads? Track your surfing habits?.You may be installing more than you think, Read the EULA agreement, you know that paragraph of stuff you "agree to" before the software installs? Stay away from warez and crack sites. Becarful what you download from file sharing networks. If you are not sure, scan it with your Antivirus app. A small file (in KB) is probably not what you think it is. Some p2p clients also install 3rd party stuff you probably dont want.

3)Adjust your browser settings: Change your(active x) settings in IE. With IE open go to tools, internet options, security tab. Click on the internet globe, then custom level. Set the first option "download signed active x controls" to prompt, the next two to disable. Read more: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/btw/ie/ie-opts.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/…y/settings.mspx
Many exploits are directed at Internet Explorer, you dont have to use it. Try a different browser: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

4)Install a firewall. A firewall will control what comes in from the internet and what leaves your computer to the internet. A firewall will also alert you when a application trys to connect to the internet from your computer, this is a good way to catch crapware or trojans, trying to connect out bound from your computer- whats that and why does it need a internet connection? You can deny it access it until more investigation is done. Zone Alarm is a free and easy to use firewall, that will provide in and outbound protection. Microsoft XP firewall only provides inbound protection. SP2 adds in and out bound protection which is better than nothing, but is not as robust as third party firewalls, Be sure to run only >one< firewall. If you use another, be sure to disable XP's built in firewall.A inexpensive NAT hardware router with SPI (firewall)would be even better, along with a software firewall.
Zone Alarm: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp
Kerio Personal Firewall: http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_home.html
Outpost Firewall: http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/

5)Download, install and update before using:(if these are constantly finding malware, then you need to make some changes)
Ad-Aware SE Personal edition: http://www.lavasoft.de/
Spybot Search and destroy: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Becarful with spyware "removers and scanners"– there are many "rogue/suspect" programs that "claim to remove" spyware.

6)Other programs to consider:
SpywareBlaster: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…showtutorial=49

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option.
However after what has been cleaned out viruses and hackers you will want to reset your restore points.

For (win XP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

And I notice my Windows Firewall is not active because I have Norton Internet Security which, when installed, recommends to disable Windows Firewall so they (Norton) can run theirs. Is that not true?

yes

I already have an Antivirus program running (Norton Antivirus) so should I still install one of those you recommended from the internet?
