…. but at work I guess we are protector by a whole security team. This situation certainly makes me more appreciative of their efforts! The Problem: My home computer was protected by a full prof ver of McAfee, BlackIce and Adaware (only ever run with default settings), but it still appears to have been badly infected. Every now and then something would set off McAfee deleting stuff, but I generally ignored it. Bad move, right? Just last week, things seemed to get significantly worse when after a re-boot the browser home page was directed to AllWebSearch/1221. I resolved to do something about all this and found the Tomcoyote site at work. I followed the instruction in your advice page, printed the instructions and wrote a disc with all the suggested programs - downloaded, installed and ran Spybot (it found and deleted half a dozen problems), then ran imunize as described - rebooted - I already had Adaware SE, but made sure its reference files were up-to-date, went through the settings as described and then ran it (only one registry problem found) - rebooted - Installed HijackThis199 and created log file - At this point I need to make an admission! The first three lines of the log file showed the registry redirection of my homepage and I could not resist deleting them? The rest of the log file was too difficult for me to interpret. - I logged in to the tomcoyote site, opened a new topic thread and was in the process of pasting the log file and adding words…. when  - A Windows message dialogue popped up and said something like "you are modifying system based files which infringes you Microsoft license agreement" there were two instances of the same dialogue, then the machine crashed. - On reboot, the machine now stops part way through, saying that windows/system32/config/system is corrupt, exit to system setup and type 'r' on the first page to recover from install disc. PLEASE HELP? (I'm sure you've heard this all before) I HAVE NO BACKUP OF THIS MACHINE AND THERE IS STUFF (FAMILY PHOTOS OF THE LAST 10 YEARS) ON IT THAT ARE IRREPLACEABLE TO ME. Regards
Can you boot to safe mode? (tap f8 while bios loads) If you can give this a try. Sometimes when you install a program or driver, it might render XP unbootable. If your computer won't boot into the operating system normally, you might be able to boot into Safe Mode and use System Restore to go back to a previous restore point to fix the problem. But what if you can't even boot into safe mode? Then you need to start the System Restore tool from the command line. Here's how: When booting your computer, press F8 to bring up a boot menu Select Safe Mode with Command Prompt Select the operating system to start (if you have multiple operating systems installed) Log on with an account that is a member of the administrators group At the command prompt, type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe Press Enter This will start the "Welcome to System Restore" screen. Go through the steps of the Wizard and follow the instructions to restore your system to a previous restore point
Thanks Siggyx,

After half a dozen tries, I eventually found a line in safe mode that allowed me to boot at last successful point.

So, now here is my log:

Some more info:
After using Spybot and Adaware, there is an executable that still keeps popping up named ST.EXE in C:\WINDOWS\
It is picked up periodically by McAfee and deleted.

I think I'm going to purchase TrojanHunter!
Do you get anything from the sale?

Regards
Trojan hunter has a free 30 dy trail ;)

Ok please do an online virus scan here >>>> http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co…n_principal.htm

Then post a new log.
The first time I ran PandaScan it got rid of a few files, one of which was TelCmd.EXE, but it seemed to hang trying to interogate the Prefetch file associated with it?

The second time around it came back with No Virus Found.

However, while the scan was running McAfee was very busy, see log below:

Please do at least 2 online virus scans

Panda http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co…n_principal.htm

Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Then reboot and post a new log.
So, I ran PandaScan and Housecall online, and also the evaluation version of Trojan Hunter locally, results as follows:
1) House Call - found a couple of .DAT files that it said were Uncleanable, so I delete them as instructed
2) Trojan Hunter - No viruses
3) Panda Scan - got stuck again on the Prefetch file for TELCMD.EXE (I found later that scanning this file seems to prompt another dialogue asking for the Win profile name - when I click OK on this dialogue Panda Scan quickly finishes the scan), no viruses fond. Also, during this scan, McAfee was set off deleting ST.EXE from C:\Windows (detected as Downloader-ML), and moving tmpF.tmp.Vir to C:\Quarantine (detected as New Poly Win32)

I believe that this one is the executable for a funky mouse that we are using (my wife brought it home from work) Kensington Mouse Works. Scanned file: kmw_run.exe kmw_run.exe - OK Statistics: Known viruses: 117234 Updated: 14-02-2005 File size (Kb): 100 Virus bodies: 0 Files: 1 Warnings: 0 Archives: 0 Suspicious: 0 The other one does look suspicious, right? When I started to get these problems and had a poke around myself, I deleted it already! It was locked by the OS, but I set BC Wipe to delete on startup. However, that did not seem to get rid of the Prefetch file - any ideas? Here is an export of each of the registry keys that include hiden.exe.
