Little Eagle,

Performed all as instructed and here is the new logfile. I have a feeling that whatever created dimmonui.exe and dhcdm.exe created 2 new executables with different names to replace them: efstf.exe and dxmns4.exe. When I clicked on the version tabs for dimmonui.exe and dhcdm.exe, there was no company name. Also, hijackthis log indicated they were in system32, but I couldn't find them there so I did a search and found them in C:WINNT/Prefetch, not System32.

Computer seems to be working fine now, but before performing your last set of instructions, I was getting a pop-up window that said something about a "Test" at the top in the Explorer bar. The full window didn't appear and I didn't write down exactly what it said - will make a point to if it comes up again.

Again, thank you for all of your help - What's next?

Naomi

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we'll take another look.
Little Eagle,

There were no processes running with those names in task manager - it's like it morphs to a new identity to hide itself - nasty little bugger whatever it is!

So I ran hijackthis and found their new names: grpfo.exe & gprptui.exe. I "fixed" them in hijackthis and then rebooted in safe mode and deleted the files (& cleared recylce bin). I also found a file calles Cxtpls.exe which also keeps coming back (I looked it up on the internet and it said it was some ad company), it had it's own folder so I deleted it and the folder. Rebooted, and re-ran hijackthis.

Also, that popup test window came up again (before cleaning) and it said:

http://as.casalmedia.com/s?s=55874&u=http://testcom&f=2&id=1

I'll see if it comes up again.

Here's the new log:

Little Eagle, I got an e-mail saying that you posted a reply last night, Tue 2/15/2005 7:23 PM, but I don't see one. I know they were doing maintenance on the site so I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything. Did your reply get lost? cngoegan
Hi there,
Please set your system to show all files; see here for how to do this if you're unsure.

The following are mandatory fixes:
Press Control-Alt-Del to enter the Task Manager.
Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate/AutoUpadate.exe

Exit the Task Manager when finished

Close all programs down, leaving only HijackThis running.
Place a check against the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AutoUpdater] "C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate\AutoUpdate.exe"

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: see here if you don't know how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

The following are optional fixes:
Close all programs down, leaving only HijackThis running.
Place a check against the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: see here if you don't know how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we'll take another look.
Due to inactivity this topic will be closed.

To help keep you clean follow the recommendations in Tony's article here:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
