Hi Mike, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. If you are still looking for help I will see what I can do. I want you to know that this: C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 3\MsgPlus.exe is where your LOP infection came from. Keep in mind that program has nothing to do with Microsoft. We are lucky because Elrond recently created a fix for us. Follow these directions:

You have a LOP infection that often comes together with Messenger Plus. To remove it we will try the simple way first.

1. Go to Add/Remove programs. Double click on "Messenger Plus!" (or click on Remove)

2. The "Messenger Plus! - Setup" is now displayed. Click on the Uninstall button. Note: options displayed on the first screen are not related to the sponsor program.

3. The sponsor screen is now displayed (if you don't see it, search for it in your Task Bar). To prove that someone is currently reading the screen, you have to type the code that is displayed. Once you enter the code, press Uninstall.

4. If you entered the code properly, the program will ask you to confirm that you want to uninstall. You must answer "Yes" to this question, else, you won't have another chance of uninstalling.

5. To complete the uninstallation, follow the instructions that are displayed (the first one is to close all your Internet Explorer windows, that's very important). When everything is complete, restart your computer and, hopefully voila one nasty infection is gone.


Scan with HijackThis and put a check in front of this item:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT click on Start then click on Explore, locate and delete this item:

Mike, I believe the above item is only a file, look closely, if it should involve a folder you are not aware of, delete it.

Run cleanmgr, allow windows to remove anything it locates, empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. Surf a little to make sure the issues are gone, then post a new log along with any comments you have. Use the following two links to stay in this thread.

Thanks pskelley but the advertising has not gone away. If I use Mozilla I'm ok (except that I get lots of unremovable items in my Favourites. If I use IE I eventually get the thick task bar at the bottom of my screen plus all the items in my Favourites.

Before you replied I had found a 30 day free trial of Spy Sweeper which I installed. It found lop.com and seemed to get rid of it but it came back. (A member of my family might have reinstalled Messenger Plus in my absence. He won't be doing this again..). I followed all your instructions and uninstalled MPlus using Add/Remove- though I didn't seem to need a code. I see I've still got a file C:\windows\Prefetch\MSGPLUS.EXE-30927080.pf Could this have anything to do with it?

Hi Mike,

If I use IE I eventually get the thick task bar at the bottom of my screen plus all the items in my Favourites.

(as I am suggesting below, because of SpySweeper, if this bar is still present after you empty Prefetch and restart, I would run through the LOP removal proceedure again with SpySweeper turned off)

I expected to have to work a little more on this item, it is tough and resists being removed.

I followed all your instructions and uninstalled MPlus using Add/Remove- though I didn't seem to need a code.


From what I understand there are different varities and we were uninstalling them manually before this fix, the instructions could vary. I think the fix should say "if asked for a code".

I see I've still got a file C:\windows\Prefetch\MSGPLUS.EXE-30927080.pf Could this have anything to do with it?

A search of Google will return information for doing this automatically. For our purpose, just do it manually. Remember, the first boot afterward might be slow until the folder is populated with information to help valid programs boot as quickly as possible. While we are at it, in case cleanmgr did not get them all, this information will help you clean all Temp files. I have not run this product, but it does get good reviews. I must say that it is on my list of programs that need to be turned off as it can block HJT from doing what it needs to do. Had I seen SpySweeper in your log I would have given you this information. A good policy is not to add or remove anything during the HJT process without the knowledge and approval of whoever is working with you. IF you received any messages from Spysweeper during the LOP fix, it should be run again with Spysweeper turned off.

Would you take a look at this item for me:

Sorry not to get back to you earlier. (I was waiting for an email but didn't get one so I eventually checked the forum)

I've done everything you suggested (disabled Spy Sweeper, used cleanmgr and cleaned out the prefetch folder but I'm still getting the taskbar and adverts in Favourites in IE.

I've searched for trustras.exe and its properties reveal that it is an ADI RAS setup application. Its file path is C:\WINDOWS.

I'm sure the filepath C:\Program Files\Trust\CnxDslTb.exe relates to my ADSL modem which is manufactured by Trust. I don't know whether trustras.exe is related.

Hi Mike, I apologize for the lack of email. Management decided to make software changes and a few others. We were unable to access the website for a couple of days. I also received no email.

This looks like something left from the LOP infections, Use HJT to remove it, you may have to stop it from running if it is with Task Manager.

Then look in Documents and Setting and see if you can delete it. I can't see anything else in the log that should be causing this. Post a new log after you remove this item, so we can see if that was the problem. Post your comments also.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I fixed the line and deleted the file from the Phone Stop Drv Loud folder. There is another file in there as well- created on 5th Feb about the time I got the infection. It's an application called wmachic. Should this go as well?

I'm afraid nothing has changed. I did notice that I could switch off the task bar in other users' profiles, but not in mine. The other users have still got the unwanted (and undeletable) items in their favourites.

I left trustras.exe. I assume you think this is ok?

After I've posted this I'll do a disk cleanup and restart and see if anything has changed. I'd be ok using Mozilla but there are certain websites which won't open with it.

I can find no information to indicate it is malware, and what you gave me seems to agree with that.

Please post a log for any other users. Make sure nothing is disabled in mscofig and mark them plainly so we will boh know what log we are talking about. I will not need to see your log unless I ask for it again. Thanks…pskelley

here are logs for the two other profiles on my pc. I enabled everything in the mcsconfig startup folder. I noticed that messenger plus is in one but I can't see it in the programs folder.

Mike, It would not hurt to go back to my first post and run through the LOP removal while you are in the user. It may unnecessary but it will not hurt. Once that is done, then:

Look in Task Manager to make sure these are not running:
GCSE Bitesize Quizfish
ballbooksupport
or anything like it.

Enable hidden files

Scan with HJT and check these items:

Run cleanmgr empty the recycle bin and restart the computer.

Not real sure how this LOP cross infects multiple users, you may need to stop the item from running again, it may or may not be gone when you look for the folder. I would appreciate as much feedback as you can give me in the event I run into LOP with multiple users again.
Remove this line with HJT

Excellent! Thank you so much. I will be making a donation. It has all disappeared. No taskbar when I open IE and no unwanted items in any users favourites. I couldn't follow your first instructions in Joe's profile because there was nothing there. The ballsbooksupport and quizfish items were not running and did not exist as files in C:\Programs. I also'Fixed' the MessengerPlus.exe line in Joe's profile (not in your instructions but I thought it was a reasonable thing to do). I've no idea what did the trick in the end but there is obviously a lot of overlapping of stuff between profiles. Can you tell me how I should now protect myself? - I've got Ad-aware, Spybot- Search & Destroy, and Spyware Blaster. Spy Sweeper is on a free trial. but it clearly did not rid me of this turbulent bug.. If lop.com returns how can I get back to you? Gratefully, Mike

Good job…I did miss that, must be the hundred or so logs a day I am looking at…lol. :rofl: We make a heck of a team. I am glad we managed to clean up the mess. I am sure folks will be more careful how/what they download from now on.
