Perhaps I should tell you that prior to the HijackThis test I checked for updates to Spybot S&D, Ad-aware SE Pers, Webroot Spysweeper, CWShredder, MSBlastremover and AVGFree and did full scans with all & then re-booted.

I hope this is enough information but please tell me if I need to provide more.

I always manually check for updates to all the programs listed above before I ever do any surfing, everyday by the way. Oh and Windows XP is set to automatic updates of course.

Thanks in advance for your help - I look forward to seeing what I need to do. :)
reformed_fanboy

Hi again reformed_fanboy.
Your log does not look bad. There are one or two things to do but nothing serious.

If you have problems with the fixes try switching of Snoop. If this does not work try the following .

Open HiJackThis, click "Open the Misc Tools Section", and click "Open process manager". Highlight C:\WINDOWS\SnoopFreeUI.exe and click "kill Process". Do not kill any other process

The following are mandatory fixes:
Close all programs down, leaving only HijackThis running.
Place a check against the following items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

The following are optional fixes:
Close all programs down, leaving only HijackThis running.
Place a check against the following items:

O16 - DPF: {4D7F48C0-CB49-4EA6-97D4-04F4EACC2F3B} (InstallShield Setup Player 2K2) - http://sib1.od2.com/common/Member/ClientIn…2/OCI/setup.exe
O16 - DPF: {5D9E4B6D-CD17-4D85-99D4-6A52B394EC3B} (WSDownloader Control) - http://www.webshots.com/samplers/WSDownloader.ocx

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Reboot

Open HiJackThis, click "Open the Misc Tools Section", and click "Generate StartupList log". Check mark the two boxes. Please add this log to your next post. This will let me check if your computer is free of a Haxdoor trojan variant that often comes together with "horse dialer".

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and the StartupList log and we'll take another look.
Hi again Elrond - here are the two logs you asked for.

You'll note though that I haven't done anything about the 2 optional fixes. I don't know what the first one is and I wasn't keen to do anything about the Webshots one as I don't know if that would mess up my ability to download the free wallpaper. If you are able to advise me on these two matters I'd be grateful.

Also, you'll no doubt see that I've now installed Spyware Guard although it doesn't seem to like Firefox. :( Oh well on the odd occasion I have to use IE some extra protection can't hurt. :D

Thanks once again for your kind help with all this.

Well done reformed_fanboy.

Your log looks clean and I do not see any traces of Haxdoor in your computer.

With regards to the optional fixes this perhaps could explain it.

The following items are OPTIONAL and can be fixed by putting a check mark by each line. By fixing it you can shorten boot-up time and free up resources. You will not harm your program by doing this and you will still be able to start it manually via the start-button. It is your choice, so you must decide whether you want to get rid of it or not.

These are ActiveX files that will reload if and when they are needed.
O16 - DPF: {4D7F48C0-CB49-4EA6-97D4-04F4EACC2F3B} (InstallShield Setup Player 2K2) - http://sib1.od2.com/common/Member/ClientIn…2/OCI/setup.exe

I also see two more items that can be worth while to fix

This is optional but is unneeded at startup.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Application Scheduler is installed along with RealOne Player and is running in startup, and is not needed. Once installed, it runs independently of RealOne Player and consumes resources. You can fix this with HJT, but you will also need to set it not to load in RealPlayer itself to keep it from resetting itself: (1) Start RealOne Player (2) Tools -> Preferences (3) Automatic services in the Categories pane (4) Uncheck all options and then OK
This is the item to check mark in HJT:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

If you want to fix those items then you should

Close down all programs, leaving only HijackThis running.
Place a check against the items and click on Fix Checked. Exit HijackThis.

Now that your computer is free of malware, I want you to take some precautions to avoid being re-infected.

Settings and maintenance

1. Clean out temporary files.
Go to "Start" > "Run" and type cleanmgr
Make sure the following are selected:
* Temporary Internet Files
* Recycle Bin
* Temporary Files
Click "OK'.
Repeat for each user account on the computer.
You should do this every few weeks to avoid buildup of unnecessary junk.

2. Clean Out System Restore.
Malware could get backed up in System Restore.
For Win XP follow these instructions to delete all restore points.
1. Go to "Start" > "Control Panel".
2. Make sure the Control Panel is in "Classic View". If it is not, click "Switch to Classic View" towards the top-left of the screen.
3. Double-click "System" and go to the "System Restore" tab.
4. Check "Turn off System Restore" and click "OK" and then "Yes".

After restarting your computer you should turn it back on by following the above procedure and uncheck "Turn off System Restore".

You can find out more about this subject at How to turn off or turn on Windows XP System Restore

3. Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions that apply to all "Windows" except "Windows XP with SP2". In SP2 many of those setting are the default settings but check your settings anyhow. The settings can become restrictive but you should use them anyhow. If there are sites that will not show up right with those settings and that you rely on to be free of malware place them in the trusted zone.

1. Click "Start". Open "Control Panel".
2. Select the "Internet Options"
3. Select "Security" Tab and select the following settings.

* ActiveX controls and plug-ins
• Download signed ActiveX controls: Disable
• Download unsigned ActiveX controls: Disable
• Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe: Disable
• Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins: Disable
• Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting: Disable

* Downloads
• Font Download: Disable

* Microsoft VM
• Java permissions: Disable Java

* Miscellaneous
• Allow META REFRESH: Disable
• Display mixed content: Disable
• Drag and drop or copy and paste files: Disable
• Installation of desktop items: Disable
• Launching programs and files in an IFRAME: Disable
• Navigate sub-frames across different domains: Disable
• Software channel permissions: High Safety
• Userdata persistence: Disable

* Scripting
• Active scripting: Disable
• Allow paste operations via script: Disable
• Scripting of Java applets: Disable

* User Authentication
• Logon: Prompt for username and password

4. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
5. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
6. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

These are a must to protect yourself from malware.
1. You have a good anti-virus .
KEEP IT UPDATED

2. You have a good firewall.

Be restrictive with access to the internet. If you are unsure if the program really needs the access, test it by denying the access and see if this has any negative effects. If not make the block permanent.

3. MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to keep “Windows” and "Internet Explorer” updated. Go to ”Start”> "Controll Panel" > "Security Center" > "Automatic Updates" and if you are not sure that you will do a update in a timely manner, set the "Automatic updates to automatically update your computer.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof you must keep it updated as well. Go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed. Update MS Office here.

4. Download and install “SpywareBlaster”
Run it. Click "Updates" at the left and click "Check for Updates". After updating click "Protection" at the left and towards the bottom click "Enable All Protection". You should now be protected from all known bad ActiveX. You should occasionally check for updates.

5. Download and install "SpywareGuard"

Further tools

I highly recommend downloading and installing the newest versions of “AdAware SE Personal” and “Spybot Search and Destroy”
After installing remember to update the definition files for each program.
I also suggest that you visit this website and follow the instructions on how to configure both programs for best detection. These instructions are correct even though they refer to a cleanup of an infected computer.

There are many other programs that will add extra layers of protection to your computer as well.
I recommend “IE-Spyad” By default, it is unzipped to "C:\ie-spyad". Find out how to install it by going to the "ReadMe.txt". You should occasionally get updates by using the bat file or by uninstalling and deleting the old files and returning to the site to get the new version.

A Trojan scanner would be also be helpful. You can download a trial version of “Trojan Hunter” and run it to remove any traces of trojans.

The ”a Squared” trojan Scanner has a free version. It is an onboard trojan scanner that is installed much like Spybot/AdAware but handles trojans. Nice to add to your armor if you wish.
Download free from “a Squared” (The download button is at the bottom of the page). Install it.
Run and activate your free version with a Squared and then select
Scan your computer for malware infections .
Then select any/all drives.
Finally Scan selected folders.

It is worth while to take a look at "So how did I get infected in the first place? for some good advice.
A good source of information about computer security can be found at this website . ChrisRLG is an Administrator and Classroom Teacher at Tom Coyote.

Update all protective programs regularly - Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Best of luck and clean computing
Elrond
Thank you so much once again for all your kind help Elrond. I've done everything you've advised and am now working through your advice in 'further tools'. Unfortunately however I can't get the display options back to my preferred Windows XP settings. Whenever I try to do so the 'please wait' window pops up, everything else greys out and it just completely freezes. :angry: :( So if you could help me to resolve this I'd be very grateful because I don't really like the 'classic' options. :) EDIT: Sorry, but I also meant to ask if I need any special security software for MSN IM? I only ever use IE if Firefox won't work but have heard horror stories about MSN IM security vulnerabilities. Thanks.
This is not my speciality but I wonder if Snoop or Spyware guard that stops you from changing your settings. They probably do resist changes by you just as they resist changes from others. Try switching them of while you change your settings. Do not forget to switch them back on when you are finished. Good luck Elrond.
Well Elrong, I'm stumped.

I couldn't work out how to turn off Spyware Guard so I uninstalled it with Windows XP Add/Remove Programs - however I did get a message saying that it could not be uninstalled completely and the rest would have to be done manually. :(

Then I discovered that Snoopfree was freaking out with the Hotkey keyboard trying to use a keyboard hook, so I allowed that access but that didn't work either. So I uninstalled Snoopfree (no problems that time) but that didn't solve it either.

So it seems to me that it's either some parts of Spyware Guard that need to be removed manually that are causing the problem or that I've incorrectly followed your earlier instructions.

So I've done some new HJT startup list and scan log for you to have a look at.

I hope you're able to discover the problem - I really don't want to completely uninstall and re-install Windows XP just to be able to have Windows look as I want it to!

Incidentally 'Microsoft VM - Java permissions' didn't appear in the list so I wasn't able to 'disable' it.

Hi reformed-fanboy.
I must repeat that I am not an expert at this type of problems.
I believe that SpywareGuard is inocent in this matter. If you uninstalled it and you still have the problem I think that it is something else that is making your trouble. You probably could reinstall SpywareGuard with no problems.
It happens sometimes that you can not uninstall everything cleanly. Sometimes the best way to get rid of a program that behaves like that is to reinstall it and then uninstall it. However it is worth while to keep Spyware Guard.
Have you tried to do one change at the time and thereby see what step it is that makes the trouble?
I found two pieces of debris from uninstalled programs in your latest log but neither should have any effect on your display settings. I will give you instructions how to get rid of them in the end of this post.
If I where in your position I would first go to the forums at PCpitstop or at Dell. They specialize on hard and software problems. I also believe that there are Microsoft forums for this sort of problems.

Now to get rid of the two pieces of junk still in your log.

Open HijackThis and click "Do a System Scan Only". (If HijackThis shows a "Scan" button instead of "Do a System Scan Only" that is OK. In that case click "Scan".) When the scan is finished put a check mark by the items that are listed in bold below. If you can not find an item, that is OK. Just continue but inform me with your next post. Do not click fix until instructed to do so:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

CLOSE ALL PROGRAMS and BROWSERS that are running, except HijackThis and then click the "fix" button.

Sorry that I can not help you more but your problem is out of my area of specialization.

Good luck Elrond.
Hi Elrond, both items have been fixed as you advised. I will re-install both SpywareGuard and Snoopfree - I was just eliminating them from my enquiries. :) Thanks for the tip re reinstalling and then unistalling a program to fully clear it too. :) I tried to re-instate the setting but didn't note what they were before I changed them :( so will take it up with the websites as you suggest. Thanks once again for all your help in this matter and for pointing me in the next direction. I don't like Windows classic but can put up with that - we've cleared the trojan off my pc which is the most important thing. :D Thanks so much, once again. Best wishes. R_F
