At certain times when browsing, the error message "IE has encountered a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" is
encountered. This is happening with a very regular frequency and I have
tried several things to repair - none have worked yet.

I am running Windows XP SP2 and I have scanned for adware using Ad Adware SE version 1.3 and came up clean after about 6 passes. Then I used Spybot version 1.3, whihch required about 4 passes before almost everything was gone. There are still 5 occurrences of "DSO Exploit" and they all deal with internet settings. I tried to remove them with Spybot and it says they have been corrected, yet they remain on each scan. I am enclosing a HijackThis file - hopefully someone can help. THanks…

Peter

Then Download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder.
http://www.igorshpak.net/software/3ssetup104.zip
Under "items to clear" click all. Then click "clear selected items"
Reboot and Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
After running Ad-Aware and SpyBot (both ran clean), I followed the instructions and attached the HJT file below. Sevaeral sites I visit are still causing IE to close. A couple of these are: www.thestar.com (newspaper) and www.topweddingsites.com (wedding dresses for my daughter).

Any further suggestions?

Hello PeterK,

Little Eagle is out of town for a few days. I'll see if I can help from here:

I suggest you do this:

Open Spybot S&D, click Mode>Advanced>Tools>Resident and remove the check from the Tea Timer box. You can reinstate it later but we don't want it interfering with what we need to do. Reboot when done.

Be sure that all windows are closed. Click on START-> RUN. Copy paste the following as it is and click OK.

regsvr32.exe /U fen.dll

You should get a message that it has been uninstalled succesfully.
Then be sure that all windows are still closed. Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, just start the program button.

Run HijackThis again and put a check by these.

O2 - BHO: Flash Extender - {95795B67-BBAB-47d0-8A9F-069E8242C0E5} - c:\Program Files\Fen\fen.dll

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Search for and delete these folders if listed:
C:\PROGRAM Files\ttrxxxtt
c:\Program Files\Fen

Search for and delete these files if listed:

C:\PROGRAM Files\ttrxxxtt\NR8fFgAR.exe

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I followed the instructions and after browsing several of the pages that had given me trouble in the past, I am happy to say I was able to view them without a problem. I have provided the HJT log below and you will note that several of the files I was asked to remove came back? I will let you know in teh next few days if the problem returns.

Thanks for your help!

PeterK

1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files (If listed)
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I carried out the instructions listed in the previous post. I was successful in deleting the ttrxxxtt problems using killbox. However, the bpt and fen files and directories have been stubborn and seem to re-appear after each re-boot no matter how many times I use killbox to remove them.

It was recommended that I download and run Panda ActiveScan… I did and it found/disinfected 1 additional problem.

Overtha past few days, I have been able to use IE without any "IE has encountered a problems…" messages, so I think the main problem has been fixed. My most recent logfile is listed below.

Thanks Again,

PeterK

I foloowed the instructions listed in the post above and have attached the latest HJT file below. When I re-boot into the SAFE mode, non of the troblesome exe files were running (bpt, 27, bptre). fen.dll, btre.exe, bpt.exe and bpt_c.exe were not shown in the HJT file, but I fixed the remaining files. I deleted fen and bpt folders. Dare I say, I think I'm clean?

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
