My computer has started running VERY slow lately. Only change I have made is downloading "AVG - free edition." I am considering purchasing the software.

I have run Spybot and Adaware. Following is my HJT log. Thanks for your help!

Hello focus and Welcome to the TomCoyote forums!

First, your version of HijackThis is out of date. Please download the newest version,
HijackThis v1.99.0.
Be sure to replace your old HijackThis.exe with this new one by saving over it or deleting your old one before downloading the current version. Please repost a new updated log.

Regards,

Dave
Hi Dave, I did as requested and downloaded the new version of HJT. When I attempted to scan, it made it part of the way then I received an error message and the program closed. Any ideas? FYI…I do NOT have Service Pack 2. Thanks so much for your help. Tish
Hi Tish, What was the error message that you received exactly? HJT 1.99 will run with or without SP2, so that should not be the problem. Regards, Dave

Thanks,

Tish
Hello Tish,

First, you should only be running one antivirus program at a time to avoid conflicts. If you like you can keep both AVG and McAfee installed but only have one active, and the other as a backup if needed. Or in your case just make sure you disable McAfee while you're trying out AVG.

Now you can run HiJackThis. Check the boxes next to these items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

This next item I'm not sure of. Is AsureID some sort of employee or work related connection? Leave for now.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = AsureID

Now close all browser and explorer windows, and tell HijackThis to "Fix checked". Then Reboot:

Now post a new HJT log for review. First please try to run version 1.99. If that is still
unsuccessful then post one from 1.98.2. And please post any information you have on AsureID.

Regards,

Dave
Good morning Dave,

Followed your instructions. I removed McAfee. I just got approval to purchase AVG for the company. I thought best to clean up my computer prior to installation.

AsureID is the company we use to make our employee ID badges and I transmit info to them.

I deleated the 2 items as requested. Ran HJT version 1.99. I got the same error message. So ran 1.98.2. Following is the log.

Have a great day…..

Tish

Hi Tish,

Your log is clean :D, how are things running? Here are a few tips to prevent malware from infesting your computer in the future.

In addition to updating and running your Antivirus, Adaware, and SpyBot S&D I recommend the following:
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware
  • Install SpywareGuard - SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method. You can download SpywareGuard here:
    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sgdownload.html
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial50.html
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
    Understanding and Using Firewalls
  • This point cannot be stressed enough! - Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
I recommend cleaning out your temporary internet files. CCleaner is a
freeware system optimisation tool for PCs. It removes unnecessary junk
from your computer allowing it to run more efficiently and securely.
Please download CCleaner from one of the two websites below:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html
http://www.ccleaner.com/

Install CCleaner. Now open and click on the Windows tab.
Check the following items:
Under Internet Explorer:
Temporary Internet Files
History
Recently Typed URLs
Delete Index.dat files
Under System:
Empty Recycle Bin
Temporary Files
Memory Dumps
Chkdsk File Fragments
Old Prefetch Data

Next: click the Options button and then click the Settings tab
Uncheck: Only delete files older than 48 hrs. and click OK

Prior to running click on the Check for updates now… link
Then click the Run Cleaner button. It should only take a few seconds
to complete and exit when it is done.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Safe Surfing :wavey:
:P Yeah! Your the best. Other than the most recent version of HJT not working it seems to be moving quite a bit faster. I will follow your instructions as recommended. My computer is part of a network and connects to the network through a hub. I will verify if a firewall is installed. Again, thanks so much for taking the time to help. Tish
