I have a browser problem that I cannot solve. Spybot and Ad-Aware SE are unable to fix. Ad-Aware consistently finds issues, mostly .dll files labelled VX2 along with guard.tmp (all in c:\winnt\system32\. It often cannot remove all of the dll's, so Ihave used killbox to remove them, needing to reboot to do it. Re-running Ad-Aware shows the same number and types of problems are back again, usually with different named dll files.
IE often opens itself and goes to loadingwebsite.com and even firefox gets hijacked whenI have it open, new tabs get opened up when I am browsing, example, if I google something, a new search tab will often open up, acoona.com, I believe.
I am running windows 2000, sp4.
Thanks for any help.

Here is my latest hijackthis log. When I tell it to fix the hosts entries, tehy show up again at a later time.

I am still experiancing these problems, and, in fact, FireFox has started to open spontaneaously now to show me ads. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
Hello Bos'n , Welcome to the TC.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!
Thanks for the reply. Here is the l2mfix log from step 1. Now I am off to run step 2. I suggest you do this:

Download: hosts.zip http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.zip
[right-click - Select: Save Target As] [Updated 01-23-05]
Unzip in a "temp" folder and place in the appropriate installed location:

Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC

Run HijackThis again and put a check by these.

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I hve done all of this. The only problem was that there were a lot of files in C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\OPYN816N\ that windows could not delete. I managed to get rid of all but 4 using cygwin. Those 4 are lister here:

Oops, forgot to say how my machine is behaving now. An IE window just opened and stayed minimized with "cannot find server". Also, I tried using killbox to delete those 4 files with no luck, and cygwin failed with a file name too long error.
click on KillBox.exe to run it.

In the main screen of Pocket KillBox, go to Tools in the top menu bar, and select: Delete Temp Files.

Back at the main screen of KillBox, select the option: Delete on Reboot

In the Full Path of File to Delete box, copy and paste this entry:
C:\WINNT\system32\ooyiko.exe
Press the button with a red circle and a white X.
When asked if you would like to Reboot, select yes.

Restart your computer in Safe Mode

Press the F8 key, when you see the Starting Windows bar at the bottom of the screen.

Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

See if you can remove them now

C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files (If listed)
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Still couldn't delete those files and CleanDisk hangs very quickly after starting, and I mean hangs for hours, taking 98-99% cpu and never moves farther.

Here is my lated logfile.

Thanks,
Bos'n

Ok, they are gone. I was not able to delete through windows explorer, but using KillBox, and entering the path to the files, followed by the first 6 characters, ~ and the last character, and telling it to delete on reboot, for all 4 files, I got rid of them. Have deleted all Temp\* files now, and emptied recycle bin. Here is latest log file.

Thanks for responding so quickly all this weekend.

Looks like this bad guy doesn't want to die :rant2:
C:\WINNT\system32\ooyiko.exe

On the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.

On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types

Uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

Do a search for ooyiko and delete all found.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
KillBox, Delete on Reboot got rid of it. There was only the one. Here's the new log.

Again, Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated. Haven't seen an ad popup since I managed to delete those 4 persistent files.
