Hijacked By My Kids

My kids are home from college and have nearly killed one of our computers. I must boot from safe mode and when I try IE I have no control and go to odd sites, even google is wrong. I can't even sign off. Other programs in windows seem to operate o.k. I have tried Ad-ware and Spybot and have run Norton but the computer gets less controllable with strange pop ups. I have now run Hijackthis and will post it below. Can you help me? Thank you.

Click here to download CWShredder and run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. Reboot when done.

Click here to download Spybot Search & Destroy - install, update, scan and fix all RED items it finds. Reboot when done.

Click here to download Ad-Aware SE and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Click "Start", select "Perform Full System scan" and "Next" to start the scan. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".

Reboot when done. Rescan with HJT and post a new log here so that any remnants can be removed manually.

I ran CWShredder and got a negative scan. Then I ran both Spybot and Ad-Aware after updating them. Both took a long time. Spybot picked up ~ 150 problems and Ad-Aware ~ 500. I eliminated all of them after running each program several times. They tended to hang up if I eliminated too many items at a time. Then I tried IE again and initially it worked on my comcast high speed connection. Then I began not being able to access certain sites, i.e. aol.com. Then a screen showed IE error and the computer shut down. I have not rebooted it yet. I did run a new HJT before this happened. It is posted below. Thanks again for all the help. I am getting closer to a functional computer again. By the way, I am using my other son's computer to send these messages and am using a floppy to transfer HJT logs between computers.

Create a new folder called C:HijackThis, move the HijackThis.exe file into the new folder and run it from there. This is necessary to ensure you have backups should anything go wrong.

Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

Click here, for instructions on how to enable hidden files and folders to be visible. After enabling, reboot into safe mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded, find and delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\process.exe
C:\WINDOWS\XWCHMBNL.EXE
C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\ <– folder
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\btws.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wbbj.exe

Reboot when done, rescan with HJT and post a new log here - there will probably be more to do.

Also, click here to download DllCompare. Start the Program with and click the Run Locate.com - be sure the \Windows\System32 directory is in the box and wait until the the blue text says it has 'completed the scan'.

Click the Compare button to start the next process. The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist', files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'. Very few files should be listed in the lower pane when the Compare scan is complete. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button and post the log here in this thread.

Thank you for the recommendations. I deleted all the entries on hijackthis that you recommended and hit fixed checked. I then tried to delete the folders you recommended in safe mode. I could not delete windows\process.exe or XWCHMBNL.exe because the computer said these could not be deleted as they were required to run windows. The other three files I was not sure I should delete without the first 2. I rebooted my computer and am now able to use my IE. The only problem is that I get a repeating pop up that explorer has caused an error in unknown and will close. I ran another hijackthis log. I will post it below. I have not done dllCompare yet. Let me know what I should do next. Thanks again.

As an update, I tried to run dllCompare but it would not run. Presently, I cannot shut down my computer. I have to turn the power off and reboot in free mode. Then I can shut down and reboot. Then only problem then is that I get a screen saying Exporler has caused an error in and will shut down. But then I can't close the window. The more I try it eventually turns the screen black and I have to start from safe mode again. IE is working again, but this makes using the computer difficult at best. Is there any other things I can try? I posted my last hijackthis log above. Thank you very much for all your time and help.

Are you comfortable using regedit? If, so click Start>Run and type regedit >OK

Navigate in the pane on the Left Hand Side to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

and click it to highlight it. A list of Programs will appear in the Right Hand pane, right-click this one:

and select Delete. Repeat for this one:

I did the regedit and am better able to use my internet. However, at start up I still get a screen that says explorer has caused an error in and I cannot close this screen or the computer shuts down. I also still cannot shut down my computer. I always have to go to safe mode to shut down to reboot. Also I still get alot of redirects when I search the web. I have made another hijackthis log. It is posted below. What else can I try. Thak you very much.

HijackThis is running from a temporary folder

Create a new folder called C:HijackThis, move the HijackThis.exe file into the new folder and run it from there. This is necessary to ensure you have backups should anything go wrong.

Click here, for instructions on how to enable hidden files and folders to be visible. After enabling, find, zip and send this file:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\chup.dll

to this e-mail address including a link to this thread in the body of the email.

Print out these instructions as most of the steps need to be done in Safe Mode and you won't be able to go online.

Click here to download About:Buster and unzip it to your desktop. Don´t run it yet. Also, click here to download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder.

Reboot into Safe Mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded.

Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

Find and delete the following:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\ADSTATUS SERVICE\ <– folder

Now double click AboutBuster.exe that you downloaded earlier. Click Start then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report (copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

Rescan with Adaware and let it remove any bad files found.

Reboot back into Normal Mode. Click here to download cwsuninst.zip. Extract cwsuninst.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double-click the cwsuninst.reg and when asked to merge say yes. Open System Security Suite and doubleclick on sss.exe. Check the boxes under the 'Items to Clear' tab and click 'Clear Selected Items'. You will be prompted to reboot, do so.

Rescan with HijackThis and post a new log here.

I am worsen than before. First a tried opening a new folder for hijackthis. Then my computer froze. I turned it off, and on reboot it froze as the tool bar was loading. This happened even after I shut it off first in safe mode. Now when I try to start windows normally, I get a window saying explorer has caused an error in chupv.dll. When I close that window, I get a new window that says explorer has caused an error in unkonwn. When I close that window, I get the first error message again. It goes back and forth until I give up and turn it off. I did eliminate the hijackthis lines you suggested in safe mode. No help. I am posting a new log I did in safe mode below.

It seems to me that there is a problem in loading internet explorer and that is why the computer is freezing. I cannot access the internet or download cds at this time. I am stuck. Any further help you can suggest. Is it time for a new computer? I do greatly appreciate your help.

You didn't send the file I requested. Please send this file:

Great success!!! I am now able to start up and shut down windows in the normal mode. Thank you very much. I have been testinmg some of the other functions and so far I have found that the audio function does not work. When I try to play a cd I get a window saying that realplayer has caused an error in mmsystem.dll. Could this loss of audio be from my kids downloading music? That is when all of the problems began. I have run a new hijackthis in normal mode and the log is posted. Thanks again. Let me know what else I can try to get audio working. Hopefully you have received the file you asked me to e-mail.

Unfortunately, I have found another major problem with the system. I cannot start norton, spy bot or ad aware. When I click on them, I get a window saying winnmm.dll cannot start. What do I do. Thanks.

I haven't received the file. Click Start>Run. Copy & paste the following and click OK.

regsvr32.exe /U FPAFBAA.DLL

You should get a message that it has been uninstalled succesfully. Then again with only HJT running and have it fix:

Rescan with HJT and post a new log here. Click here to download eScan's mwav application. I ran regsvr32.exe /U FPAFBAA.DLL but the first pop up said that uninstall failed. I pressed ok and got a second window saying DLLUnregisterserver in FPAFBAA.DLL succeeded. Is this ok? Should I go ahead now with the HJT recommendation? Thank you.
