Thanks in anticipation. I went to a site last night which I discovered is now fully of spyware etc. I have removed most (I think) but my microsoft antispyware vehicle keeps giving me an error warning of a BHO at start up.

I manually removed a folder called Comedy Planet and also removed comedy-planet.exe via Hijack this earlier. However, I'm still getting the warning.

Here is the log file.

Hello Cicero and welcome to TomCoyote.

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [xhrmy] C:\WINDOWS\Xhrmy.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

Optional items to check with HijackThis for improved performance.
Resource hog that launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. Some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it isn't required anyway.
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Please set your computer to show all files.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Step 3
Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\Xhrmy.exe

You'll need to search for this file with Explorer to delete.
ALCMTR.EXE

Step 4
Scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Thanks very much for the response. I should have posted earlier and perhaps saved you some time. I had deleted the message R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing after reading further at this forum. I also saw that you recommended using Trend Housecall which I have used before- I did this and there was a Trojan on my system. Although I was running Norton (up to date) this had not been detected. By that night things had got to the stage that I couldn't even get to the Internet. All my system restore points had been wiped and the computer wouldn't allow me to even make one. (I should mention that this computer is less than two weeks old, so you can imagine the frustration). Anyway, the next day I decided to restore the whole computer to factory settings- virtually reload the OS and lose all data. So, I reclaimed my computer, but didn't get back here to tell people. My apologies. However, I haven't forgotten the site amd will refer people to it when similar situations arise. Thanks very much for the help.
Glad to hear you got the computer running better again. Feel free to post back if you have any problems in the future. I'll give you my all clean speech with recommended programs to help keep away further infections.

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are two very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3
AdAware SE v1.05
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D and Adaware SE

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
