First of all, thank you for providing a reliable resource which allows others to help themselves with the guidance of more experienced hands.

I'm running NAV with updates current for 1/12/05 rev 16, and adaware SE with def file SE 1R25 11.01.05

The only symptom I seem to be experiencing is the browser hi-jack to "about blank", but it looks like my memory and cpu usage is up over normal as well, though that could be because of multiple windows/aps being open trying to get rid of this little beastie.

Atatched is the log from HJT 1.99.0 as of 5 minutes ago.

Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. If you require any additional logs etc, just let me know and I'll get whatever you need.

Thanks again for your assistance, and I'll be dropping my donation in the box after pay day.

Download FxAgentB.exe from http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FxAgentB.exe and save it to your desktop. After downloading, double-click the FxAgentB file to run it and the program will scan your entire hard drive - this may take a while. When it is done, it will generate a log file called FxAgentB.log - save that information as you will need to paste it here later. Reboot when done.

Next click http://www.eudaemonia.me.uk/downloads/Files/CWShredder.exe to download CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom and run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. If you already have CWShredder, click 'Check for update' and make sure you are running version 1.99. Reboot when done.

Then click http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ to download Ad-Aware SE and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Click "Start", select "Perform Full System scan" and "Next" to start the scan. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".

Reboot when done, rescan with HijackThis and post a new log here, together with the FxAgentB log.
Thanks for the help.

Here are the new HJT and agentb logs. For reference I ran CW shredder v2.12 and it come back clean. I know your post mentioned v1.99, but v.212 is what I received when I clicked update.

Let me know what I need to do next. Also, I had a question as to how I can prevent this from happening again. I keep my virus definitions up to date, but I understand that this type of malware isn't vigorously pursued by symantec. I had let my wife borrow my laptop while her PC was down so I can't always enforce best practices if I'm not behind the wheel. Any recommendatinos on good software to keep this from happening again once we get this fixed?

Thanks again for all of your help.

Best Regards,
Chris
Download this tool called AboutBuster http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip

or here:
http://malwarebytes.biz/AboutBuster.zip

Unzip it to the desktop and run it. First press *Find Updates* and let it download them (I think we are on Ref. file #21 on that one). Then follow the instruction to scan and fix.

Finally, do an online scan at the following site. Let it remove any infected files found.
Trend Micro (PC-cillin) - Free on-line Scan
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

(Housecall has historically found additional infected files from that variant is why I'm asking you to use that one)

Post a fresh HijackThis log and the AboutBuster report back here please.
I ran about buster, let it scan 2x, then rebooted, then ran it again and let it scan 2x and rebooted again, each time It came back clean.

I then tried to run the Housecall, but I get an error in my browser saying " Your Security settings do not allow Web sites to use active X contrls installed on your computer. This page may not display correctly. Click here for more options…"

When I click on the bare under the address bar, I get a help window but each search yields a "page not found" in the content pane.

I went into tools/internet options/security/custom settings and enabled all active x related activities, but still get the same message. I have been able to run active x controls from websites before because I've done it for work related sutff. I'm wondering if this hijack hasn't changed how IE behaves in addition to the unremoveable re-direct. It was actually the inability to run activeX controls for work which prompted me to get more serious about getting rid of this dayam thing.

Do you think I could try installing a third party browser like Netscape Navigator to run housecall? Or do you have another suggestion?

As requested, here are the HJT and Agent b logs after aboutblaster was run…

Click HERE to download ServiceFilter, a little script by rand1038 that reveals potential unauthorised running services in your system. Download, unzip and double-click ServiceFilter.vbs (you may need to enable your antivirus program to run the file). This script will create a text file named Post_This.txt in the same folder as the script itself has been saved - copy and paste the contents of Post_This.txt in your next reply here.

Post the both of those logs plus a new hijackthis log please.
Siggyx,

Here is the service fliter log…

It looks like the fix that was done before the last reboot came back on some lines. This is certainly a persistent little bugger, and I greatly appreciate all of your continued assistance.

Thanks,
Chris
Please download AVG Free and install. Make sure that you disable your resident anti virus before you do. NEXT Ok please boot to safe mode (tap f8 while bios loads) then while in safe mode open CWShredder and click on FIX. Then scan with Symantec Backdoor.Agent.B again. Then while still in safe mode run about:buster. I would like to see the log it produces. Then scan with AVG. Then post a new hijackthis log please.
Sorry it took so long Siggy, but that AVG scan took over an hour.

Anyhow, Agent.B.Scan, CWshredder, and AVG all came back clean.

As per your request, here is the latest HJT log….

Anything that you see giving you hope of cleaning this thing outta here? Once again, thank you for your continued assistance.

Chris
The negative effects of this little bug seem to be increasing… Or AVG is an extremely memory intensive application. Now when I reboot, wait a minute or two after my profile loads, and then go to open a IE and connect to a website, the page stays blank for over 2 minutes, while "detecting proxy settings". Anyhow, any luck deciphering the last HJT logs? Thanks, Chris
