OK, we are going to have to try a couple of different approaches to see which one works.

Download the following tool and install it in its own folder:
http://downloads.subratam.org/VX2Finder(126).exe

Press 'Click to Find VX2.BetterInternet.
Press 'Make Log' and post it in this thread for review.

*** Do Not Delete Any Files At This Time ***

Do this also:

Download DllCompare , Start the Program with and click the Run Locate.com - be sure the \Windows\System32 directory is in the box and wait until the the blue text says it has 'completed the scan'.

Click the Compare button to start the next process. The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist', files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'. Very few files should be listed in the lower pane when the Compare scan is complete. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Now make a log of what was found and post the logs from both programs back here. MrC

OK nothing shows - lets do this:

Looks like you have Comet Cursor on the machine:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SSWPlauncher] C:\PROGRA~1\COMETS~1\Platform\Bin\comet.exe /app:SSWPlauncher

If you don't want it, go to the link below for instructions on how to uninstall it.
http://www.accs-net.com/smallfish/comet.htm#rem

Press Control-Alt-Del to enter the Task Manager.
Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes if listed:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsxsvc\wsxsvc.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\kyfhpt.exe

Exit the Task Manager when finished

Close all programs down, leaving only HijackThis running.
Place a check against the following items:

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

HowToShowHiddenFiles - enable this

Now delete these files/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsxsvc\wsxsvc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsxsvc <—folder too!!
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\kyfhpt.exe

Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log and lets see how we did, MrC
MrC,

I followed all instructions, except for "kyfhpt", as it wasn't found on my computer. I've also noticed that my recycle bin doesn't have anything in it. I tried deleting a trash file and it doesn't appear in the bin.

Thank you for your assistance.

Make sure it is set to scan the System32 directory, click the Run locate.com button.
When the scan is complete, you will see in blue Completed the scan, Click Compare to Continue at which time you will click the Compare button.

It will sort through the files it found and determine which should be flagged as "No access" and display them in the lower box.
In a few minutes it will complete (in blue Completed)
Click the button Make a Log of what was Found
See if that shows anything, if it does polst the log. MrC
I didn't compare these files again as I did the 1st time, just made the log with what was initially found: * DLLCompare Log version(1.0.0.125) Files Found that Windows does not See or cannot Access *Not everything listed here means you are infected! ________________________________________________ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\fgntsub.dll Fri Jan 14 2005 5:34:46p ..S.R 222,589 217.37 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\fp6s03~1.dll Fri Jan 14 2005 6:49:52a ..S.R 222,589 217.37 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hrn805~1.dll Wed Jan 12 2005 9:23:02a ..S.R 222,635 217.41 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\l20u0c~1.dll Fri Jan 14 2005 5:32:54p ..S.R 225,842 220.55 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\lv8q09~1.dll Sat Jan 8 2005 10:52:22a ..S.R 226,013 220.71 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mfc42.dll Wed Aug 4 2004 1:56:42a A.SH. 1,028,096 1004.00 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mitext40.dll Tue Jan 11 2005 8:54:52a ..S.R 222,620 217.40 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mmdadiag.dll Wed Jan 12 2005 8:46:32a ..S.R 222,620 217.40 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msvcirt.dll Wed Aug 4 2004 1:56:44a ..SH. 54,784 53.50 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msvcp60.dll Wed Aug 4 2004 1:56:44a A.SH. 413,696 404.00 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\nutid.dll Fri Jan 14 2005 6:49:52a ..S.R 225,842 220.55 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\oleaut32.dll Wed Aug 4 2004 1:56:44a ..SH. 553,472 540.50 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\olepro32.dll Wed Aug 4 2004 1:56:44a A.SH. 83,456 81.50 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sbnaq.dll Thu Sep 16 2004 7:04:10a A.SH. 0 0.00 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\somsrv.dll Fri Jan 7 2005 5:54:58p ..S.R 223,615 218.37 K ________________________________________________ 1,435 items found: 1,435 files (15 H/S), 0 directories. Download and unzip the KillBox to a folder.

Open the KillBox.
Select Option "Replace on Reboot"
From the list below copy & paste each full path into the Killbox topmost box.

With the full path to the file name in the topmost textbox, click the option "Use Dummy" which will create a numbered dummy file instantly for you.

Click the Red X …and for the confirmation message that will appear, you will need to click Yes
A second message will ask to Reboot now? you will need to click No (since you are not finished adding all related files in yet)

Do this for every file below

These are all the bad files:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sbnaq.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\somsrv.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\nutid.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mmdadiag.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mitext40.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\lv8q09~1.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\l20u0c~1.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hrn805~1.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\fp6s03~1.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\fgntsub.dll
C:\Windows\System32\Guard.tmp

On that last file, close all programs and Reboot your computer.

After a Reboot, Use the DllCompare again and create another log.

Post that log so I can check it

If all was successful, it should be empty.

Try that and let me know. This is the first step to delete this new malware - so please be patient, there's other methods we can use. MrC
Followed the edited instructions, here's the new log: * DLLCompare Log version(1.0.0.125) Files Found that Windows does not See or cannot Access *Not everything listed here means you are infected! ________________________________________________ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mfc42.dll Wed Aug 4 2004 1:56:42a A.SH. 1,028,096 1004.00 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msvcirt.dll Wed Aug 4 2004 1:56:44a ..SH. 54,784 53.50 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msvcp60.dll Wed Aug 4 2004 1:56:44a A.SH. 413,696 404.00 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\oleaut32.dll Wed Aug 4 2004 1:56:44a ..SH. 553,472 540.50 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\olepro32.dll Wed Aug 4 2004 1:56:44a A.SH. 83,456 81.50 K ________________________________________________ 1,434 items found: 1,434 files (5 H/S), 0 directories. Looks like we are making progress.

We still have more work to do to completely eliminate the infection.

—————————————————————————-

Guard.tmp, may still exist as it creates on Shutdown, but is unprotected at this point.
Open Killbox again, paste the path to guard.tmp into the first box.
ie:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\guard.tmp

This will only require a "Standard File Kill" default setting of Killbox.
If the file does exist, you will see the name guard.tmp in Blue appear. Click the Red X to delete it.

Now copy and past this into the KillBox and hit delete
C:\RECYCLER\Desktop.ini
This will fix the bug where no files are shown in recycle bin, and no option to store files into recycle bin.
———————————————————————————————–

Open up the VX2.BetterInternet File Finder again.

Click the [Restore Policy] button, this will restore the removed Debug privilege for Administrators, otherwise some utilities will not function properly.

Also hit the [UserAgent$] button .
————————————————————————————————

From the Killbox menu bar, click Tools & select Hosts File

It will open in Notepad, just highlite the offending entries, or basically everthing under the entry
127.0.0.1 localhost <—keep this - delete everything else

————————————————————————————————

Open up regedit.
Go to Start - Run - type regedit - navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify
under this key will be a sub key holding the name of the VX2 dll file, and will need to be removed.
That Subkey could be called just about anything and will be different for every System.

Example: (it will be larger list)

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\RunServices]
"Asynchronous"=dword:00000000
"DllName"="C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\s0pula791d.dll"
"Impersonate"=dword:00000000
"Logon"="WinLogon"
"Logoff"="WinLogoff"
"Shutdown"="WinShutdown"

open regedit, hilight the Notify Key, right click on it, and select export
save it as Notify.reg to Desktop.

Open Notepad, drag & Drop the Notify.reg to Notepad and post contents here.
MrC
MrC, I tried the Vx2 instructions, and needed to reboot, I wasn't able to hit the [useragent$] button, it was not active.
