Hey all.

Recently researched some stuff online and got all kinds of pops. Avasti 4.5 detected a virus and I moved it to the chest and deleted. SpywareGuard keeps popping up a warning that a BHO is activated and trying to change my IE settings. I keep click remove BHO but every few seconds, it pops up again. Ran Sypbot S&D and fixed various stuff. Here's the log

update more info: the BHO is listed as follows: 88C624F7-3C5C-2537-EAC0-6CF6F7B6BD77 LOCATION: C:\WINDOWS\system32\nthm.dll however, I cannot find this file in system32 even with 'show hidden files and folders' turned on. ??? the notifications continue to pop up as SpywareGuard continues to try and remove it and cannot. Please help Alc
Update2: did online virus scans and trojans were found (housecall and panda) and they claim computer disinfected. Both revealed: TROJ HIDEPROC.B SpywareGuard is still giving me alerts about attempt addition of BHO noted above. thanks Alc
Update 3: Major problems with Ad-Adware SE! It identifies CoolWebSearch (28 objects) but when I select them and click next to fix, it locks up. I had to end task on it. CWShredder says my computer isn't infected with CoolWebSearch. Frankly at a loss as to what to do, now. :( Alc
Ok, after a series of Spybot S&D attempts, CWShredder attempts, AD-AWARE SE attempts, housecall and panda, I'm still showing:

DSO Exploit (in spybot S&D)

CWShredder says coolwebsearch is not present on my system

Ad-Aware SE continues to show coolwebsearch registry entries
(when it warned me that an IE value was being altered to none, I lost my earthlink pop-up blocker, scan blocker and such buttons but figure I can restore those with a reinstall of totalaccess (earthlink stuff)—not worried about that atm.)

Hey all:

I've since had to do a system restore to deal with issues in my first post here (which scrolled unanswered to page 4). I'm opening a new one because that previous one is no longer valid. BTW, I appreciate the help but wonder if I'm posting correctly—since no one responded to the thread whatsoever. If I shouldn't post a second thread, please pardon as I feel this is a separate issue. None of the problems I had in my first thread currently exist on my machine. If this needs to be moved, apologize for the inconvenience.

Hi I have merged your topics. The reson you got overlooked is that. 1. We have lots of victims - and it can take some time to get to people. 2. We tell our staff to look for zero reply topics when looking for a new victim to assist. Because you replied to your own topic it 'passed' our helpers by. I will try to assist you - in my lunch time at work - about 1-1.5 hours time.
Hi there,

Your restoring to an earlier point with system restore, has removed the problems from the registry - BUT I would add a word of caution. The bad files would not have been deleted an accidental clicking of one of them WILL infect you again.

The following are mandatory fixes:
Close all programs down, leaving only HijackThis running.
Place a check against the following items:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://best-search.us/?page=search&pid=sext01
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm
O16 - DPF: {563ED66E-531B-51D2-5DB0-5080C83DA4EE} - ms-its:mhtml:file://C:ie.mht!http://69.50.164.12/exp/mht/sext07.chm::/MegaInstaller.exe

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we'll take another look.

That deals with your current log. What you should try and do is find the following files and delete them if possible.

C:\WINDOWS\maxop.dll
C:\WINDOWS\mfcik32.exe

Running these two programs in safe mode (F8 at boot time) would also help find and delete those bad files. this post is what I would have made for the earlier HJT logs.

Hi and welcome.

My suggestion is so that you can follow all of this, to copy all the text to a wordpad file on your computer.

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Please download About:Buster from here: http://tools.zerosrealm.com/AboutBuster.zip. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster.
We will use that program later in this process.

Next download  CWShredder, install. If you already have CWShredder, please delete it and download the latest version.
We will use that program later in this process.

Download Service Filter from here:
http://home.comcast.net/~rand1038/vbscript/ServiceFilter.zip
Extract it to it's own folder.
We will use this later in this process.

Ok.

Now reboot to safe mode (F8 at boot time).

Then run cwshredder first, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. Let it delete all it finds.

Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so. (It does take a long time to run)

Reboot to normal mode.

Find ServiceFilter that you downloaded earlier
Click on ServiceFilter.vbs
A text file called POST_THIS will be in the same folder
Please use Edit>Select all then Edit>Copy to obtain the contents
Save it in notepar or wordpad for posting laster.

Now do a new Hijackthis log and post that with the about:buster log and the service filter log for me to see.

It would be nice to see all those logs just incase.
Sorry about delay and for posting in my topic, thus confusing the issue. I did the hijack this fix and here is the new log below. However, I cannot find those files (with all show hidden file options used) even with a search with the exact paths.

PS: spybot S & D still shows DSO Exploit (5 entries)

That shows all clean :~)

Nice.

The DSO is not a problem - you can ignore that. It is a false positive in a way - An old problem of windows that MS patched - in a different way - but Spybot still shows the problem from a different view. So long as you have all the patches from windows update that DSO report can be ignored.

=======================

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :-

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:
    Managing Windows Millennium System Restore
    or
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

May your God go with you..
