Hello sjjtaylor ,welcome to the forum.

Important: Do this before any fix.

You need to update your version of HijackThis. Open HJT> Config> Misc Tools> Check for update online. If that doesn't work, download it from my signature and remove the hijackThis.exe you have now.


Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

The reason we do this is Hijackthis creates backup files just in case you'd need to restore one and we'll be cleaning out the temp files.


Next:

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.


Go here and run online scans (all), allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

thank you, LDTate. I really appreciate your help. I did the best I could to follow your directions. Sometimes the pages you directed me to seemed to to blocked, so I did my best to figure a way around. I appreciate the forum designation as warm. I would have picked absolute zero. (-:
I have run spybot several times, and everytime it reveals, and then fixes 5 instances of DSO Exploit. I don't know why it seems to come back, of course. When the computer is shutting down (so that it can restart), I have seen (the last couple times) a brief window that is entitled Dupeme~1.exe with some note about a DLL application that failed. When the computer starts up again, I get a RunDLL message about Error loading C:\ProgramFile\WldTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll If that has something to do with games, it's not important to me. On the whole the computer seems to be running faster, but when I ran HiJackThis just now, I see that the home page is still listed as about:blank. It could be, of course, that I just need to follow your original instructions again. Please let me know.
I'm not sure I understood your last insruction to sopy/paste a new log file into this thread. I'm assuming that you are willing to look at the log file from HiJack This again, now that I have run the various scans and fixes. I it is something else, please advise. Again, thanks for your help. I have run spybot several times, and everytime it reveals, and then fixes 5 instances of DSO Exploit. I don't know why it seems to come back


This is just a bug in SpyBot. It's OK.

I'm not sure I understood your last insruction to sopy/paste a new log file into this thread. I'm assuming that you are willing to look at the log file from HiJack This again,

That means we are going to go through the logs until your computer is clean.

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.


Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Search for and Delete These files:

4inside.exe



Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.


Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.


Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

Thanks for the well wishes. it's been a long haul already. Anyway, I had a fair amount of success following your instructions. thanks, again. I seem to have obtained Spy subract along the way, and it ran one time, and found some things to delete. Then later, as I was shutting down, it offered to restore some config (I think) stuff that had been corrupted. Things when pretty smoothly after that. Log looks good :D :thumbup: How is it running any issues?

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK




If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Thanks again. The computer still seems to be running fine. I'm typing a couple email about Mom to cousins. (-: I'm fairly sure I don't have the 3 programs you reccommended, so I will look into them soon. I also do not have an anti-virus, although I use Trend Micro's scan with some regularity. Thanks for the offer of the free firewall and anti virus. Suppose I need to be more careful. Mostly I only do email and go to completely boring safe website (IRS, PA, church headquarters, etc.), but the kids do get music and buy car parts from EBay. thanks for being generous with your knowledge and time. sjjtaylor
