Hello Ethologus, You are seriously deficient in your critical updates from Microsoft. You have none of the criticals for Internet Explorer and No Service Pack one. This is why you are getting infected in the first place. Please visit and update your copy of windows and your browser.

Is this your antivirus program? I have never seen it run from a service like that. I just want to be sure you have a current, up to day antivirus program. If you need a link to free one, please let me know.

First..check in Add Remove programs to see of This item is there, if it is uninstall it.
Windows ControlAd

If not, we need to stop it from running to fix it. Open Task Manager, then the Processes Tab. End process on these items if there and anything that you do know recognize.
C:\temp\salm.exe
C:\Program Files\Windows ControlAd\WinCtlAd.exe
C:\Program Files\Windows ControlAd\WinCtlAdAlt.exe

Enable hidden files from the following link for your Operating System:

Scan with HijackThis and check each of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [salm] c:\temp\salm.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows ControlAd] C:\Program Files\Windows ControlAd\WinCtlAd.exe

Have put off downloading many of the updates, since the size and my connection speed is slow. Will do it while I sleep I guess.

The (O23 - Service: AVWUpSrv - H+BEDV Datentechnik GmbH, Germany - C:\Program Files\AVPersonal\AVWUPSRV.EXE) I dont think is my anti virus, I recently reinstalled AVG, after the first hijack this. Lost it when I reiinstalled windows xp, so it cant be that. Should I get rid of it and see what happens?
Hello Ethologus, Good job with the cleanup, your log appears clean right now. A couple of things I wish to touch on.
A change was made in the location of HJT. I have no objections to the folder being called "Ian's Important Stuff" just keep in mind that HJT stores backups for safety and logfiles you create in this folder, so store nothing else in it. Thanks.

I see you have C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgamsvr.exe onboard now and it is a great program, keep it updated and run in often.

Have put off downloading many of the updates, since the size and my connection speed is slow. Will do it while I sleep I guess.

As I stated, you WILL continue to get infected without the Critical Patches the updates have to offer. No third party software can stop this from happening.

This is information about the item, it is not malignant, so unless you have problem with it, I would leave it alone. Why don't you try to disable that service as see what happens. As long as it does not create any issues by being disabled, leave it like that.
