My system has picked up the about Blank problem, and every once in a while it will redirect a weblink to a search site. I have read some previous posts and ran AdAware, SpyBot, SpyCatcher, and online virus scanner recommended by someone on this site, and have gone through the Registry but have been unable to find and wipe out the problem. Any help would be appreciated. Here is my log:

Hello pa911 ,welcome to the forum.

Important: Do this before any fix.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

The reason we do this is Hijackthis creates backup files just in case you'd need to restore one and we'll be cleaning out the temp files.

I suggest you do this:

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Thanks for responding. Had some trouble getting into safe mode. It took several attempts to get in. Here's the new log.

Right now it says this about:blank A few days ago, I could type in a URL, say www.yahoo.com and then set the default page. It would stay until I rebooted, then about:blank would be the default page. A few days ago, I noticed when I reset the home page, it would be immediately reset back to about:blank. Let me try setting the home page to a different URL
I've tried a variety of URLs I have not used before, and IE will not keep the default home page setting. Once I close IE and reopen it it goes back to about:blank.

Print out these instructions as most of the steps need to be done in Safe Mode and you won't be able to go online.

Do this so you can see hidden files and folders - click here to download xphidden.zip. Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double-click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes. Click here to download About:Buster and unzip it to your desktop. Don´t run it yet. Also, click here to download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder.

Reboot into Safe Mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded.

Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank

Now double click AboutBuster.exe that you downloaded earlier. Click Start then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report (copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

Rescan with Adaware and let it remove any bad files found.

Reboot back into Normal Mode. Open System Security Suite and doubleclick on sss.exe. Check the boxes under the 'Items to Clear' tab and click 'Clear Selected Items'. You will be prompted to reboot, do so. Repeat for all log-in accounts on your computer.

Rescan with HijackThis and post a new log here.
