Not sure if those can slow my computer to a crawl, making it impossible to connect to some favorites, but something is wrong. Tried Ad-Aware, Spybot, NAV in Safe Mode, Symantec "fix"…nothing has worked. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hello BeckyS
Sorry to have taken so long to reply.
First, lets get rid of that outdated version of Hijack This. Just delete it.
Please download the new version 1.99.0 from here:
http://www.merijn.org/

Please move Hijack This into a folder of Its own.
Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there, and double click to run it.
Failure to do so may mean backups, if needed, will not be available.

I see several problems with your log, so lets do some of the basics.

Please use the following links to run the two online Virus Scanners and let them fix whatever they find.

Panda
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co…n_principal.htm

Trend Micro
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

And here are links to two online Trojan Scanners. Run one and let it fix what it finds.

http://scan.sygatetech.com/pretrojanscan.html

Or here:
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

Please note that the following are the most recent versions, but they still must be updated before every use.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE.
Download the VX cleaner plug in for Adaware. Install it, then open Adaware & go to *add-ons* & run the plug-in. If anything is found, select *clean system* & when done, reboot & run Adaware & let it finish the clean-up. Reboot again.

Would you please download the Spybot S&D program from here Spybot S&D 1.3 and install it.
  • Select Search for updates.
  • Then select all available updates that are displayed in the white box.
  • Select a download mirror nearest your location.
  • Then select Download updates .
  • Shut down and restart Spybot.
  • Select the Search and destroy icon and click on Check for Problems.
  • Delete/fix anything that spybot lists In RED.
.

Then, please REBOOT, to allow Spybot to finish working

Then please run Hijack This, copy the log and post it here, in this string, using the Add Reply feature, so I will be notified.
Thank you for your help. :) This computer runs so slowly anymore and takes forever to Start up. Here is the new log after following all the instructions.

Hello BeckyS

There are some things you could do to speed up your startup. Probably many more than I will mention here. Take a look to see what is in your startup folder and see if any of them could be started manually, only when you require them. Like your Kodak, or ipod, or possibly some you do not need there at all. Later I'll offer a free program that will keep your temp and temporary internet files pared down, if used regularly that could help. Have a look at those 016 entries in your Hijack This log. If there are any you do not know and trust,or don't care about, they could be fixed with Hijack This and will be replaced when you next visit the site from where they came. There were other entries I could have reccommended to stop on startup, but you may not want to have to hunt for them when needed, or possibly forget you have them on manual and will not know why something isn't working. We all probably do that sometimes and it is a real pain.
Lets try the following and see if it helps.

You might also want to do a chkdsk and a Defrag, which will clean out your system and get it in better operating condition. That should be done regularly, but it does take a considerable amount of time to do and we all tend to neglect them because of the inconvenience.

Of course you know, Norton/Semantec is a huge user/waster of resources.

Please print out these instructions so you can read them while you clean your system. A printout also makes a good check list for Hijack This, to avoid making errors.

Use ctl/alt/delete to get to Task manager, highlight and END PROCESS on the following.

Viewpoint(only if you fix with HJT and Uninstall in Add/Remove Programs)

Please go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and Uninstall/Remove the following.

Viewpoint(see notation above and in optionals below)

Please run Hijack This again and place check marks next to the following entries.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = ;localhost;

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [internat.exe] internat.exe

The following entries are optional, or known resource hogs. If you have noticed an overall slowdown in your computer, consider shutting down some of these. Please read the description following each and check mark for "fixing" (or follow instructions for disabling) according to your needs.

O2 - BHO: Viewpoint Toolbar BHO - {A7327C09-B521-4EDB-8509-7D2660C9EC98} - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBarBHO.dll(see notation)

O3 - Toolbar: Viewpoint Toolbar - {F8AD5AA5-D966-4667-9DAF-2561D68B2012} - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll(see notation)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe(see notation)

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Viewpoint Search - res://C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll/CXTSEARCH.HTML(see notation)

Close all other windows and browsers, then click on "Fix Checked.

Please REBOOT into safe mode by tapping on F8 frequently, during Bootup.

Make sure your settings allow you to view "Hidden files". Open up any explorer windows and click on "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" and be sure to check off "Show Hidden Files and Folders".

Delete the following File(s)/Folder(s) in DARK while in Safe Mode.

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint(only if you choose to fix it with HJT and in Add/Remove Programs) could be part of your slowness difficulties.

The following DIRECTORY CONTENTS (But not the directory) need to be deleted while still in safe mode.
* C:\Windows\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ <=This will delete all your cached internet
content including cookies. This is recommended and strongly suggested.
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

Two alternatives to the above:
http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.php, install and run it to delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

As an alternative to the above, please download and use CleanUp, free:
http://cleanup.stevengould.org/

Reboot into normal mode, enable hidden files and post a fresh Hijack This log in this thread, Using the Add/Reply feature, so I will be notified.

Note: do not attempt to "Fix" anything, as we need to see the entire log.

Please note if you are using AVG6. It will no longer be supported after Dec.2004 and will not be updated. Use the link below to Download the new AVG7.
Here is a link for a free AVG ANTI-VIRUS:
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/1/lng/us/tpl/v5
Not sure if I got Viewpoint uninstalled in Add/Remove. It kept freezing up when I'd try.
I also can't figure out how to access my Startup folder, but will work on that at another time. I use Kodak daily, but rarely Ipod. I do check disk and defrag once a month. Didn't realize Symantec is a resource hog; just renewed it but will consider changing to something else.
Thank you for your help. I'm learning a lot. :)

Hi BeckyS

Reference to Norton/Semantec. Don't get me wrong, you paid for it, so make it work for you. There is nothing wrong with it, except it does a lot and so requires a lot of resources. Just have a look at all the entries for it in your HJT log. Anyway, that's just one opinion, and you know about opinions. :D

Congratulations, your Hijack This log is clean.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

    Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
    -reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?
Thank you very much for your help, Piatan. I use Ad-Aware and Spybot every couple days, and empty temp files often. Didn't know I could delete Off-Line content; was afraid that would wipe out all my documents. :) But now I know better. I will install some of the other programs you suggest, and will print all this out so I can keep the other 3 computers in this house running as smoothly as possible too. :) Thanks again for your help and suggestions!!! Becky
Glad we could help.
