Everytime I reboot, and then immediately run both Adaware and Spybot, they remove spyware. Thus it appears that something is not being removed but actually returns whenever I reboot. I ran the hijackthis program and need help to determine what to remove in order to get my pc healthy again. Many thanks in advance, regards, Bruce

Thanks for sending your HijackThis logfile. We apologize for the delay in responding. The volunteers working here are swamped, and unfortunately some requests don't get answered in a timely manner.

If you still need some help with your problem, please respond to this thread with a fresh HijackThis log.

Be sure to use the newest version of HijackThis (version 1.99) and unzip it into a newly created folder (such as "C:\HJT) to ensure that backup files will be saved reliably .

I will be notified automatically when you reply.

Thanks
daveai
Daveai, thanks for your reply and I understand your being swamped. No rush but I still have the problem. I run Spybot and Adaware each day and still have problems. I will be taking my pc to a repair shop while I am traveling (in two weeks) and expect them to possibly remove all of my software, reformat my hard-drive and then begin to re-install my software and drivers. This might help but so too would knowing what to remove from my Hijackthis log, the latest log is shown below. Regards, Bruce

lawscreen – Thanks for sending your HijackThis log.

There is really very little wrong here.

Please tell me more about this:

I run Spybot and Adaware each day and still have problems.

What sort of problems?

The fix instructions I'm sending will give your system a pretty good 'wringing out', in addition to taking care of the few issues I see in your HijackThis log.

It's not clear to me why you are planning to have a shop do the reformat. If it is simply because you are worried about malware, there are certainly less drastic (and les expensive) approaches.

Anyway…

To start, follow this link for instructions to enable 'show all files' for your system.

1 – After checking yourself against the following instructions, run AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy:

Please see How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware for instructions on how to download, install and then use this software.

Please see How to use Spybot to remove Spyware for instructions on how to download, install and then use this software, which may catch things that Ad-Aware misses.

Please let me know if anything can not be cleaned by these utilities.

2 – Next, use Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to remove any of the following malware that you find:

Viewpoint Media Player
any other Viewpoint references

3 – Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

And, this is an optional item you may choose to fix:

Application Scheduler is installed along with RealOne Player and is running in startup, and is not needed. Once installed, it runs independently of RealOne Player and consumes resources. You can fix this with HJT, but you will also need to set it not to load in RealPlayer itself to keep it from resetting itself: (1) Start RealOne Player (2) Tools -> Preferences (3) Automatic services in the Categories pane (4) Uncheck all options and then OK

It's also a good idea to rename realsched.exe itself to prevent this from re-installing.

This is the item to fix in HJT:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, and remember to make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, then click fix checked.

4 – Reboot into Safe Mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?), then use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\ <– this folder

Please let me know about any problems with the file/folder deletes.

5 – Next, use "Start > Run" and type in "%temp%" (without the quotes). Delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder (use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes").

Then, Empty your Temporary Internet Cache completely. Close all instances of Outlook and and Internet Explorer, then use "Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab" and click the "Delete File" button. When prompted place a check in: "Delete all offline content", then click OK.

Then, use Windows Explorer to clean out ALL the other temp folders on your system (navigate to the folder, use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes"):

* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\

* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

Double check to see if the folder C:\DOCUMENTSandSETTINGS\YOUR NAME\LOCALSETTINGS\Temp is empty.

Please let me know about any problems with the temp file deletes.

Note: If you cannot delete them all at once because you have too many, then click and hold ctrl and highlight a batch of them at a time. Once highlighted, R-click over the highlight and select delete. Rinse, lather, repeat until folder is empty

6 – Now, reboot normally and run at least two of these online virus scans (Or more if you wish.), reboot after each scan:

RAV<<
eTrust<<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful

Housecall<<
Panda ActiveScan<<

Now, reboot once again, and run HijackThis to create a new logfile. Repost it here, and if you had any problems with the steps outlined above, please let us know what they were. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.

Thanks
daveai
Davidai, thanks for your help. I have performed all that you stated with the following results:

RAV would not run no activeX
etrust would not run, asked if I was using IE4 or greater (I m using 6)
Housecall worked and gave me no viruses
Panda would not work due to an error

I have lost my IE 6 startup screen , do you know what I fix to return the standard screen?

I have noticed that my system does run a lot faster likely due to all of the temp internet files being removed.

Below is the latest HJT log file, again thanks, Bruce

The issues with the on-line scans suggest to me that your security settings for IE may be set too tight to allow then to run the activex downloads that they use. Tight IE security is a good thing. Housecall ran without finding any infections…good.

I have lost my IE 6 startup screen , do you know what I fix to return the standard screen?

If you mean the default 'home page' that comes up when ou start IE…do this:

Surf out the the page you want (for instance, I use www.google.com as my start page)
When the page you want is in IE, use 'Tools > Internet Options' and under 'Home Page' press the 'Use Current' button.
Then exit IE and restart it to test.

Your HijackThis log is free and clean of malware. Nice work :)

Now, please allow me to suggest some prevention steps to keep your computer clean and secure going forward. You may have already taken a few of the steps, but it never hurts to take a quick look :)

1 – Be sure you update your anti-virus software at least once a week.

2 – To reduce re-infection potential for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing three free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE/Spyad.

3 – Use AdAware SE and Spybot S&D; to regularly to scan your system.

4 – Continue to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

5 – I strongly recommend that you consider using a Firewall. Just by using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Check out what Lawrence Abrams has to say at Understanding and Using Firewalls

An excellent overview is: So how did I get infected in the first place?. Be sure to visit the browser test link at the end of the article to really see how secure your system is!!

Thanks
daveai
