Hello cloud_man

First, lets delete that outdated copy of Hijack This.
Then,
Please download the new version 1.99.0 from here:
http://www.merijn.org/

Please move Hijack This into a folder of Its own.
Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there, and double click to run it.
Failure to do so may mean backups, if needed, will not be available.

Please use the following links to run the two online Virus Scanners and let them fix whatever they find.

Panda
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co…n_principal.htm

Trend Micro
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

And here are links to two online Trojan Scanners. Run one and let it fix what it finds.

http://scan.sygatetech.com/pretrojanscan.html

Or here:
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

Download the new Ad-Aware SE and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE.
Download the VX cleaner plug in for Adaware. Install it, then open Adaware & go to *add-ons* & run the plug-in. If anything is found, select *clean system* & when done, reboot & run Adaware & let it finish the clean-up. Reboot again.

Then please run Hijack This, copy the log and post it here, in this string, using the Add Reply feature, so I will be notified.
Thanks so much for this information, Piatan. Will do everything you said and come back here with my new log. The reason I am not using HIJACK THIS 1.99 is because for some reason it would not work properly. I was told by those at MIRC, who are associated with this site, to download 1.98, which I did. They also said sometimes 1.99 will act the way it did with me. Strange, I know. 1.98 working OKL I will get rid of 1.99 in my folders. THANKS AGAIN!
Piatan, below is a my new log, after doing everything you said to do exactly. I have saved those sites and your instructions for future reference.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP! I will make a donation, after we have finished here. REALLY APPRECIATE!

When I ran Ad-Aware SE, it found in Register Scan: "Alexa (TAC index:5): 8 total references

and it found in Tracking Cookie Scan: "Tracking Cookie (TAC index:3): 19 total references

I saved a printout for those 27 references in a file, as well as the complete Ad-Aware scan, just in case, before deleting them.

Under "Listing Running Processes" everything has a priority base of "normal", except:

#:3 [winlogon.exe]
FilePath : \??\C:\WINNT\system32\
ProcessID : 176
ThreadCreationTime : 1-13-2005 10:33:18 PM

Here is a sample of one of the 19 Cookie Scans:

And here is a sample of one of the 8 Register Scans:

I know you didn't ask for these samples, so just ignore if they are of no value.

Hi cloud_man

Thank you for your donation. That is what keeps the wheels turning and gets the bills paid. :D

Refrence the Ad-Aware scan. You will not go wrong by following Ad-Awares suggestions. If in doubt, the entries can be placed in its vault until you see if they are anything to be concerned about and deleted later, if you wish. Tracking cookies, as you are probably aware, are almost always benign, but the safest are those that are placed on your system and are deleted when you exit the site. Many volumes have been written on the subject of tracking cookies, but it boils down to, if you want it then keep it and if not, delete it. Some are even valuable, such as those that allow sites to recognize your PC and allow you entry into restricted areas within the site. Normally, Ad-Aware will find tracking cookies during its scans, that is almost inevitable. The Alexa entries seem to be less benign and most suggest deleting all those.

Your Hijack This log is clean.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Do not be concerned when advised by Spybot S&D of DSO exploits. It is a glitch in the Program and nothing more.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

So how did I get infected in the first place?
Hello Piatan, Thanks so much for everything. I will refer this site to all of my friends. Without this site and people like you, many of us would continue to stumble in complete darkness. MUCH APPRECIATED, cloud_man
