OK, i'm going crazy here. I consider myself somewhat computer literate, but i'm lost on this problem. My computer is sloooooooooow to respond to anything and it freezes like you wouldn't believe. I did the ctrl/alt/delete and there are 2 processes that are using alot of memory or usage. 1 is services.exe and it fluctuates between 77% and 80& while mcvsrte.exe is 30%. I have no idera what these are. I did a HijackThis scan and log in case someone needs it. I also did an AdAware scan but I keep having to do a system restore because apparently its catching a file associated with my wireless USB adapter and it doesn't work after I remove what it says I should remove. Can anyone help?

Can you provide a little more info please....like OS (operating system) .. how much ram.. CPU.. etc.. How many icons are your system tray (where the clock is) . Also if your running XP and you only have 2 services running theres a problem.

Sorry Crow. I'm running WinXP on a Dell Dimension 4600 with 256 megs of ram. I'm currently showing 7 icons on my toolbar, aside from the clock. I'm showing 2 icons for my wireless routing, an icon for a network cable that isnt plugged in, 1 for zone alarm, 1 for AOL, my speakers and my printer. If I control/alt/delete, i'm showing 44 running processes, but only the 2 I mentioned are using memory. Sometimes my computer makes a weird noise, almost like a dialup modem used to when it was getting a dialtone back when we still used those. A few days ago, I ran selective startup because it was taking forever to reboot. My roommates are forever messing with my computer when i'm not here. Should I just go back to msconfig and let it startup like it had been and see if that takes care of it's self? Thanks for your help!

I for one, would not use msconfig to change startup processes. And 256 megs of memory is border line for XP. Did you run SpyBot search and destroy? That will find things that AdAware doesn't. You didn't mention what AV you are running either... Norton's, for instance, is a known resource hog with the minimal amount of ram you have.

With XP, you can just about uncheck everything in startup if you like. Using selective startup is your best bet and probably wouldnt hurt to remove some of what you have now. BUT lets get you to run a hijack this scan real quick to rule out spyware/malware etc.. download Hijack this by clicking here and scan but do not fix anything yet. Save the scan to a log and then copy and paste the log in to a new thread here TC's under "hiajck this logs and problems". An epert will look yuor log over and i'll be keeping an eye as well. Then we'll go from there.
