I was having trouble finding and deleting the file c:\WINDOWS\ietlbass.dll. I think that I may now have deleted it but can someone double check for me please. It was hijacking my homepage and causing norton antivirus to put up alerts telling me of the trojan(over and over again), but it was unable to delete it.

Snooky.
Hello , welcome to the TC.

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run online scans (all), allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot

Click here to download DllCompare. Start the Program with and click the Run Locate.com - be sure the \Windows\System32 directory is in the box and wait until the the blue text says it has 'completed the scan'.

Click the Compare button to start the next process. The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist', files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'. Very few files should be listed in the lower pane when the Compare scan is complete. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button and post the log here in this thread and wait for further instructions.

Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Ok, I've done everything you said. The computer is no longer being hijacked and norton has calmed down!

This is the log from Dll Compare

* DLLCompare Log version()
Files Found that Windows does not See or cannot Access
*Not everything listed here means you are infected!

Thanks very much for your help with this.

Snooky.
I suggest you do this:

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

ALL 016's. They'll come back if needed.

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
All done, I couldn't find the C:\documents and settings\everyuser\local settings\temp folder, but i found and deleted the others. Sorry but I forgot to mention that the Trend housecall scan found C:\WINDOWS\TLBAssUl.exe and couldnt delete it because the file was being used.

Thanks, Snooky.

All done, I couldn't find the C:\documents and settings\everyuser\local settings\temp folder

Every user means the temp files listed for users of the computer, like administrator , your user name and anyone else that's listed under C:\documents and settings.

Sorry but I forgot to mention that the Trend housecall scan found C:\WINDOWS\TLBAssUl.exe

I don't see it listed in the running process.
Do a search for it and if you find it, delete.

Let me know what you find.
I understand what is meant by every user, although on my computer it's called all users, what I meant was there is no file or folder called " \local settings\temp" in the all users folder. I ran a scan for C:\WINDOWS\TLBAssUl.exe and the computer couldn't find it. Does that mean it's gone? Thanks, Snooky.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
