did you set your internet restrictions with spybot or some other antispyware programs? If no include these lines in the fix below
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

Run HIJACKTHIS, press SCAN and put a CHECK to the following lines.

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\System32\Userinit.exe
O23 - Service: ZESOFT - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\zeta.exe (file missing)

Then CLOSE all other windows including this and press FIX CHECKED

After that you need to find and delete the following file
These may be hidden files. See here for how to show hidden files.
DO NOT WORRY if you do not find them
C:\WINDOWS\zeta.exe <—- actually i think the file is already gone, but please do a check :P

After that REBOOT
enable all programs to run at startup through msconfig
scan with hijackthis and
POST a new log in this thread using 'Add Reply'
(you can disable the programs again but i would like to take a look at a log with all programs enabled)

Are you using winxp firewall ? If not a good one can be downloaded here
Zone Alarm
Take note that it is better to use only 1 firewall.

Next step is a repetition of what you have already done. Remember to disable msconfig during the scans. You also have to check for updates with spybot and adaware

You have a fair amount of Malware/Spyware on your computer which is best dealt with by spyware-removal programs used one after the other.

1.Download the new version (1.3) of 'Spybot: Search And Destroy'.

2. Install it according to the instructions in 'How To Setup Spybot SD and Ad-Aware SE'.

3. Next, 'Search for Updates' as the definitions are not likely to be up-to-date.

4. Close ALL windows except Spybot SD

5. Click the "Check for Problems" button

6. Click 'Fix Selected Problems' and fix only the RED items.

7. REBOOT to finish removing what Spybot SD found and clear memory


Ad-Aware SE by Lavasoft:

1. Download 'Ad-Aware SE'.

2. Install according to the instructions in "How To Setup Spybot SD and Ad-Aware SE"

3. Next, 'Check for Updates' by clicking on the 'world globe' second from the right at the top of your Ad-Aware SE window.

4. Install the updates.

5. Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE

6. Click on 'Start' and choose 'full scan' for a full scan.

7. Quarantine anything that it finds and SAVE the log file.

8.REBOOT to finish removing what Ad-Aware SE found and clear memory.

After that REBOOT scan with hijackthis and

After that run your Symantec virus scan and do a full system scan

Please also run the online scans again to confirm that you are clean of virus/trojans

Last thing to do
Clear out your system backups because some were infected by the virus
You have to disable system restore first reboot then enable system restore again
