Hi CazT

Please print out these instructions so you can read them while you clean your system. A printout also makes a good check list for Hijack This, to avoid making errors.

Please run Hijack This again and place check marks next to the following entries.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\System\panels\blank.htm

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

O4 - Global Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

This 032 entry is unknown, and as such could be malware. Please go to C:\Windows\System32 and find this file, HotFixQ0306270.exe , Right click on it and check its properties. If it is a legitamite file the company should be recognizable. If so, do not fix with Hijack This. Otherwise, fix with HJT.
O23 - Service: Prolific HotFix Q0306270 - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\system32\HotFixQ0306270.exe

Close all other windows and browsers, then click on "Fix Checked.

Please REBOOT into safe mode by tapping on F8 frequently, during Bootup.

Make sure your settings allow you to view "Hidden files". Open up any explorer windows and click on "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" and be sure to check off "Show Hidden Files and Folders".

Delete the following File(s)/Folder(s) in DARK while in Safe Mode.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\HotFixQ0306270.exe (ONLY IF FIXED WITH HJT ABOVE)

The following DIRECTORY CONTENTS (But not the directory) need to be deleted while still in safe mode.
* C:\Windows\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ <=This will delete all your cached internet
content including cookies. This is recommended and strongly suggested.
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

Two alternatives to the above:

Reboot and Download http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.php, install and run it to delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

As an alternative to the above, please download and use CleanUp, free:
http://cleanup.stevengould.org/

Reboot into normal mode,enable hidden files and post a fresh Hijack This log in this thread, Using the Add/Reply feature, so I will be notified.

Note: do not attempt to "Fix" anything, as we need to see the entire log.

Please note if you are using AVG6. It will no longer be supported after Dec.2004 and will not be updated. Use the link below to Download the new AVG7.
Here is a link for a free AVG ANTI-VIRUS:

Hi Piatan

Thanks very much for helping me.

Did as you requested, and I have two questions

This log was missing when I redid the scan to fix the logs
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\System\panels\blank.htm

Does this matter?

Also, I have two users on my computer (actually three, but I can only access two)
Is this logfile the same for both users, or should I post a logfile of the other user in another topic post?

My new logfile is:

Thanks again for your time
CazT
Hi CazT
Thanks for that second, informational post. I was concerned about that entry, when I saw it was still there in your most recent HJT log.

If I understand your question, there is some controversy about whether an HJT log from one user on a computer will show a bad entry, if there is a problem with another user on that same PC. I'm from the old school, BC (before computers) and prefer to be safe, rather than sorry. So, when we have finished and see that this users log is clean, lets run an HJT log on the other user and check it too. I have seen the same bad entries remain on a secondary users log, even after another users log checked clean.

By the way, that R0 entry you mentioned is still present in this log.

Your HJT log seems to be clean. So, lets see a log from the other user on your PC and we will give it a look. Post it right here, in this string, using the Add Reply feature, so I will be notified.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

    Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
    -reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?
Hi Piatan

The Hotfix belonged to a USB memory stick I'd gotten for Christmas

I did another scan and found the R0 entry. Don't know how I missed it in the fix, as there's only one other R0

This is my secondary user log

Hi CazT

Its really too easy to miss something in these logs.

Those "links" will go far in keeping the undesirables off your machine. Don't forget to update them regularly.

Nothing really to be overly concerned with in this log. Most of these can be found on almost any PC.

Please run Hijack This again and place check marks next to the following entries.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost

The following entries are optional and can be fixed with Hijack This if you determine they are unwanted, or unnecessary.

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe
These 04s "call home" and report information about you and the places you have been on the internet. Usually related to adware, but are not limited to only that and so the reason for reccomending their removal.

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
If you did not place this 06 restriction, or did not request a program, such as Spybot S&D to do so, it can be fixed with HJT, if you so wish.

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.chiselamateurs.com

If you did not place this 015 entry into your Trusted Zone, or if you do not want it there, it can be fixed with Hijack This.

Close all other windows and browsers, then click on "Fix Checked.

The following should be done on a regular basis.

The following DIRECTORY CONTENTS (But not the directory) need to be deleted while in safe mode.
* C:\Windows\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ <=This will delete all your cached internet
content including cookies. This is recommended and strongly suggested.
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

Two alternatives to the above: Either, or both the following Programs can be downloaded and used regularly, if you wish.

http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.php, install and run it to delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

As an alternative to the above, download and use CleanUp, free:
