First of all, open Spybot S&D, click Mode>Advanced>Tools>Resident and remove the check from the Tea Timer box. You can reinstate it later but we don't want it interfering with what we need to do. Reboot when done.

Click here to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the 'Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste the following, clicking the red 'Delete File' button after pasting:

C:\WINDOWS\inetm\services.exe

Click 'Exit' when done.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Make sure that you have no other browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.onlygoodsearch.com/10040/
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\inetm\services.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [xp_system] C:\WINDOWS\inetm\services.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [xp_system] C:\WINDOWS\inetm\services.exe

Reboot when done. Rescan with HJT and post a new log for a final check over.
Thanks for replying so quickly. I did what you said - three notable things happened:

1. After I ran pokcet killbox a window appeared telling me because services.exe had terminated unexpectedly (not exact words), windows would shut down in 60 seconds. It then did a countdown. At the end of the 60 seconds, computer did not shut down.

2. When I shut down after running hjt and fixing the lines you identified, computer took a long time to turn off - after about 30mins I removed the power supply. Reboot was ok and it shuts down normally now.

3. After rebooting, new folder had appeared - "C:\!submit". Only file inside folder was services.exe . I shred this file with spybot S&D and have deleted the folder.

HJT log is below.

Do you know what this is:

Done. I don't know what this entry is:
