Have acquired some sort of virus (home page is being reset to "blank", etc.). Clearly need to delete some files, but not sure which ones. Help would be appreciated. See below:

Your version of hijackthis is well outof date - please delete the current one and download a new one from here - www.tomcoyote,org/hjt/

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Unzip HijackThis into this folder. Please delete the old copy (including the zip copy) so it can't be used.
If required a tutorial is here = Hijackthis Folder Tutorial
======================================
You do have some other smaller malware - I am leaving them until we have this big baddie out of the way.

My suggestion is so that you can follow all of this, to copy all the text to a wordpad file on your computer.

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Please download About:Buster from here: http://tools.zerosrealm.com/AboutBuster.zip. Once it is downloaded extract it to
c:\aboutbuster. We will use that program later in this process.

Download Service Filter from here:
http://home.comcast.net/~rand1038/vbscript/ServiceFilter.zip
Extract it to it's own folder. We will use this later in this process.

Keep a copy of that last hijackthis log that you posted - you will need to notice any NEW O4 and O2 lines that appear - they will ALL be malware (Unless you have installed anything in the meantime).

While doing this (after the download) you should disable your current Anti-Virus program - two of these running at the same time can give problems, although AVG is known to work well with others.

Get a copy of AVG7 antiVirus (free version) from here.

http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

download it to a safe place such as c:\downloads.

when downloaded double click the file to run and install. It will ask questions on how to install - go with the defaults - allow it to update (until no updates are found) but otherwise just hit the next button till it finishes installing.

Ensure that ALL other windows are closed.

Then run AVG7 from the desktop icon - choose 'selective scanning'

Choose the c: drive.

when it finds an infected file it will ask what to do - choose 'delete' file when it asks for 'can it reboot to remove a file' say no. when it has finished do it a second time with the same responces to the infected files.

When that has finished open hijackthis and place a check against all of these lines.

All R0/R1/R3 lines except the following:-
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.washingtonpost.com
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.washingtonpost.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Verizon Online

Plus
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {04280B5C-D8EC-8CBA-64C0-902824D9E96E} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntoi.dll
OR any other new O2 line that replaces it

Plus
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [atlbg.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\atlbg.exe
OR any other new O4 line that replaces them

Plus
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightLAN 02] "C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP InSight\SBC\IPClient.exe" -l

(some AVG lines will be added to the log and they should be left BUT ANY other new lines will be suspect.)

Then click 'fix chacked' - close hijackthis.
================
Then reboot - run AVG twice more. with the same responces to found malware.

The last time it should come clean.

Reboot

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.

Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.

Reboot to normal mode

Find ServiceFilter that you downloaded earlier
Click on ServiceFilter.vbs
A text file called POST_THIS will be in the same folder
Please use Edit>Select all then Edit>Copy to obtain the contents
Save it in notepar or wordpad for posting laster.

Now do a new Hijackthis log and post that with the about:buster log and the service filter log for me to see.
Thank you for your help. I have something that is hard to root out – things that I have deleted via the virus software or hjt seem to keep returning. I followed your instructions – here are the 3 log files:

Those bad programs are still active - please do again - ensure that while you run AVG7 and Hijackthis that NO other windows are open at the same time.
Also uninstall spyspeeper - although it is a good program it may have stopped this fix from working.

(You have already got those programs above)

Ensure avg7 has the latest updates.

All R0/R1/R3 lines - Except :-
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.washingtonpost.com
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.washingtonpost.com

Plus
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4E6B36BF-D0D7-A6B6-27AC-0B789B4CE791} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msci.dll
OR any other new O2 line that replaces it

Plus
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [apiih.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\apiih.exe
OR any other new O4 line that replaces them

(some AVG lines will be added to the log and they should be left BUT ANY other new lines will be suspect.)

Then click 'fix chacked' - close hijackthis.
================
Then reboot - run AVG twice more. with the same responces to found malware.

The last time it should come clean. If it does not please run one more time.

We're not there yet. The files i'm posting below look clean, but my homepage is still being reset, now to google. When I run AVG, the one file that is a trojan that I can't seem to get rid of is:
/temp/th18f2.tmp/localNrd.cab/polall1l.exe
(I've tried just to delete this file, in safe mode as normally, but I can't.)

That looks a lot better - google is the default site that Hijackthis uses when resetting - its a known safe site, that does not normally worry people. You should be able to move back to your own home site without problems when clean.

Please download Reg Lite from here:
http://www.resplendence.com/download/reglite.exe
Once it is downloaded double click to install.

start reglite.

Navigate to: (You can use copy and paste from this into the address bar).

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\%AF夶À¨

If %AF夶À¨ exists , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

Click here if picture is required - Using Reg Lite - pic 1

Now navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_%AF夶À¨

If LEGACY_%AF夶À¨ exists then right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

If you have trouble deleting a key. Then click once on the key name to highlight it and click on the Permission menu option under Security or Edit. Then Uncheck "Allow inheritible permissions" and press copy. Then click on everyone and put a checkmark in "full control". Then press apply and ok and attempt to delete the key again.

If it does not find that second key - it will drop you one stage below - and you should be able to see something similar to the next two pictures.

A funny named key :-

With a sub key with our bad service name in - so deleted that key and sub key.

======================

Try a evaluation copy of Trojan Hunter from http://www.trojanhunter.com/ (It is currently under a special offer from a link at the top of this forum) well recommended by Tom Coyote Wilson himself.

The trojan in the temp folder does not seem to be active - and may just delete when you remove all the items in your temp folders anyway also.

Check these in hijackthis, AND WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, fix checked.

O18 - Protocol: icoo - {4A8DADD4-5A25-4D41-8599-CB7458766220} - C:\WINDOWS\msopt.dll (file missing)
O21 - SSODL: systemie - {6C898C4C-E948-4F20-8A96-DB5DC9789ED7} - systemie.dll (file missing)

Then Reboot and post a fresh hijackthis log for me to check.
I'm clean – it has been a day or so with no problems. The log file below also looks clean. Thanks again for all of your help – it is nice to know that while there are people out there who enjoy infecting the computers of complete strangers, there are also people who are willing to volunteer their help. Thanks again!

P.S. Any advice for good security programs to avoid these problems in the future?

Hi - I still have some more steps to do - although you are not getting hijacked now (Nice :) ) you still have some setting and some clean up to do - I will when finished give some advice for the future. At the moment I am at work - so will post later after I get home (say 8pm GMT)
OK.

Sorry a little later than I said - wife took me shopping. :)

Your log is clean

Except for these items

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.frame.crazywinnings.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.static.topconverting.com

They would not give you problems BUT if you ever went to those websites they would allow them to reinfect you very quickly, so we do need to remove them.

I have copied this from where LineOFire provided this fix for these trusted sites.

You can have the users run this .reg file instead though. Easier to use for the user. I'm assuming you know how to run a .reg file and if not, the instructions are there. You can also delete Provider: LineOFire if you want.

REGEDIT4

; Filename: RemoveDomains.reg
;
; Provider: LineOFire
;
; Purpose: Removes all sites from the Internet Explorer Trusted/Restricted Zones.
;
; Installation: Copy and paste this text into a text editor such as Notepad.
;
; Save this text as RemoveDomains.reg. Make sure the "Save as type:" is "All Files (*.*)" and save it to your desktop.
;
; Double-click on RemoveDomains.reg. When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click Yes.

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\63.219.181.7]
"http"=dword:00000004
Note that since the Domains are deleted SpywareBlaster protection must be re-enabled. Spybot's Immunize feature must be used again. They will also have to re-install IE-SpyAd.

Installation: Copy and paste this text from the code box into a text editor such as Notepad.

Save this text as RemoveDomains.reg. Make sure the "Save as type:" is "All Files (*.*)" and save it to your desktop.

Double-click on RemoveDomains.reg. When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click Yes.

Post back with a new hijackthis log after. If you use Spybots immunise, ie-spyad or spywareblaster they will need to be run to put your protaction back. (If not I will give a link to them when you post back with a fresh HJT log for me to check).

Fresh HJT log after please.
You are quite a guru. There is good news and bad news – those 015 lines are now gone, but I seem to have been invaded by these 69.20 lines I can't get rid of (I've run hjt and ad aware). Any thoughts?

P.S. Not to worry about the timing – good luck with the xmas shopping.

Yuck That is a new malware that we do not have a fix for yet. I will check again tomorrow - out tonight - to see that latest info from the experts who are dissecting that one.
OK

Is several version of this malware (Look2me) around - the latest one we have no fix for as yet (although one of our teachers is working on it now).

For the harder version - here is a topic where an expert is still working with a victim.
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,12023321~mode=flat

The earlier versions are removable by ad-aware via a 'pluggin' that can be installed for that purpose.

So it you dont have it get ad-aware and set according to my website www.cjwdavis.co.uk/s-a.html (links provided)

When you have done this, download Lavasoft's VX2 Cleaner plug-in at http://updates.ls-servers.com/plvx2cleaner.exe and install it

Click start [x] choose use default scanning options
click next and let adaware fix anything it finds.

Then reboot and post a fresh log… and let me know if things are any better.
Here you go – the ad aware did highlight a number of the files that seem to be the problem vx2, etc., but even after removing those objects, the basic problem still seems to be there. For a while it was extremely crazy – my computer was trying repeatedly to get me to install "flash talk 1.2", but it seems to have calmed down a bit.
