My processor goes to 100% use according to Windows XP task manager when I open a certain folder. This of course makes everything ridiculously slow. I use Spybot and Adaware regularly. I posted a problem deleting a possible bad .avi file in the "open" forum if that might be related. Here is my log any help is very much appreciated.

Hello Rivers, Welcome to the forum.

You need to update both Windows XP and Internet Explorere as they are both well behind in updates. They are both missing Service Pack 1 which is leaving you open to all kinds of problems.

I DO NOT suggest you go to Service Pack 2, at this time.

Service Pack 1 for XP

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa…p1/default.mspx

Service Pack 1 for Internet Explorer.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downlo…p1/default.mspx

Install then Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
I updated Windows as requested and I tried to update Internet Explorer to SP1 and got the message that I already a newer version installed and setup could not continue. Here is my new log and thank you very much for your very quick help.

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these.

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
I believe I followed your instructions very carefully. Some of the items I clicked to remove from the hijackthis log returned. As per your instructions I removed all the "017" listings because I did not know what they were and they returned as well. Here is the new log. Just as before I thank you for your quick help.

You might have a Lop.com infection. To remove it follow the instructions below.

Step #1
For Windows 2000/XP users

Click Start Select Control Panel
double click Add/Remove Programs
look for any of the following, and uninstall them:
Window Search
Window Searching
Lop.com
LOP SEARCH
Browser Enhancer
Ultimate Browser Enhancer

IMPORTANT!!!
you may find entries similair to the above but with Weird spacing in the names.

They are Lop.com, uninstall them.

You may be given a code to insert, do so and reboot when done.

If it is not listed in Add/Remove Programs, or if the uninstall does not seem to work go here:

http://lop.com/new_uninstall.exe

download and run this uninstaller. Reboot when done.

Before restart, Empty Recycle Bin.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
I have the "Window Searching" infection in add/remove programs. I tried to remove it and everytime I do I get an error message stating that Internet Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close. I then tried to download the file you listed a link for and I get a message stating that my security settings do not allow me to download that file. I went to Internet Explorer > Security and set all back to default. This did not help.
Lets see if this will work Restart your computer in Safe Mode. Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen. Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter. Step #1 For Windows 2000/XP users Click Start Select Control Panel double click Add/Remove Programs look for any of the following, and uninstall them: Window Search Window Searching Lop.com LOP SEARCH Browser Enhancer Ultimate Browser Enhancer IMPORTANT!!! you may find entries similair to the above but with Weird spacing in the names. They are Lop.com, uninstall them.
I tried to remove it in safe mode as suggested. I got the same error message that reads "Windows Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close." It then proceeds to apologize for the inconvenience. It seems less than sincere to me.
OK I discovered that the site you were having me get that file from was on the Internet Explorer restricted sites. I lowered the security settings so I could get the file and then raised them back to default settings. I ran that uninstall program as you requested and it got rid of the "window search" infection from the add/remove programs list. Here is the new hijackthis log.

Restart your computer in Safe Mode.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

OK I did as you said. I removed all "017" in safe mode and they were gone until I rebooted. I tried twice, but they come back following a reboot.

Please do this: Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove Ad-watch. That's what is blocking the 017 fix. You're going to need to update Ad-Aware anyway because yours is out dated.

Alright, all instructions followed. The new version of AdAware found a few things and I removed them and rebooted.
