I went ahead and deleted the C:\windows\_s.html and _h.html hidden files, then rebooted.

I looked at IE browser, changed the address back to my website. It accepted the new address and then I closed the browser. I rebooted my PC to see if the IE browser still retained my website address, and it did NOT keep it. Instead, I got what I have been getting in past few weeks: http://find-on-the-net.com/

So, I still don't control the browser. Ditto for the File Explorer. It always has the search address field, which I never use, and a couple of link buttons that are not part of the File Explorer.

Third problem is Notepad. For several weeks it would not run, but I saw it's filename among the trojans one program or the other found today. Just now I tried running Notepad, and got a dialogue asking what drive I want to clean up? This is odd!

Collis
O.K. I was actually surprised to be able to run HJT (strngely, it ad a new icon: sticks of dynamite and plunger), but I ran it anyway and got the log which is pasted below.

Click here, for instructions on how to enable hidden files and folders to be visible. After enabling, reboot into safe mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded, find and delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\_h.html
C:\WINDOWS\_s.html

Reboot when done, rescan with HJT and post a new log here for a final check over.
O.K.,

I followed your last instruction. I deleted or "fixed" the items you indicated.

The C:\windows\_h.html and _s.html

were not found as I had deleted them earlier.

I will now check IE browser.
Success! The IE browser 6 is clean now and stayed clean after rebooting. Ditto re. the File Explorer: no more adress bar with unwanted buttons, etc. One remaining issue is Notepad.exe When this file is run, I get a small dialogue box with a request to clean a given harddrive or logical drive. Looks like it function has been changed. What is your recommendation? I am not sure I know how to grab a fresh copy of Notepad from the Win 98 install disc. Is the propoer approach or get it from Miscrosoft? Clueless. I am making a donation via PayPal. Many thnaks for your perserverance and expertise. This experience will teach me a lesson re. browsing porn sites with IE. I suppose other browsers are less susceptible to these kinds of attacks. What's your opinion? Collis
Daemon, I downloaded the Notepad.exe. But I noticed that the shortcut for Notepad within Windows Accessories start menu was going to another file, cleanmngr.exe. So, I went into the Notepad.exe shortcut properties and changed it back to Notepad.exe within the Windows directory. Now the start menu shortcut works as expected. Many thanx for the other link re. preventative measures. Very helpful. I am pretty much following most the recommendations offer in that piece. Collis
You're welcome - glad to help :D
