I've been working on my brother's computer……….. loaded with problems. I've run Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware SE, Adware Away, CWshredder (among others) and have removed a lot of spyware, adware etc. including about.blank versions. I've also checked for viruses. He is still having trouble basically opening anything except his connection to aol. He keeps getting an error saying that explorer.exe has encountered an error and will close. When I start in safemode and run CWshredder and restart, he can temporarily access programs. After doing this I attempted to check for Windows XP updates he may need but auto update wouldn't run. I ran Hijack this yesterday and saved this log:

I need help determining what should be removed and any advice on resolving this problem.
Thanx, dimplek75
Please click here for instructions on how to set up a HijackThis folder.

Scanning With Ad-Aware SE :

1. Download and Install Ad-Aware SE, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan

2.Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE

3. Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.

4. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window

1) In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
*Automatically save log-file
*Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
*Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Under Definitions:
*Prompt to udate outdated definitions - set the number of days

2) Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green :

Under Driver, Folders & Files:
*Scan Within Archives

Under Select drives & folders to scan -
*choose all hard drives

Under Memory & Registry: all green
*Scan Active Processes
*Scan Registry
*Deep Scan Registry
*Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
*Scan my Hosts file

3) Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:

Under Shell Integration:
*Move deleted files to recycle bin

Under Logfile Detail Level: (all green)
*include addtional object information
*DESELECT - include negligible objects information
*include environment information

Under Alternate Data Streams:
*Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
*Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT

4) Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:

Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
*Unload recognized processes during scanning
*Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
*Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

Under the Log Files:
*Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Please do not check or make green: Include Module list in logfile

5. Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.

6. Click ‘Start’

*Choose:'Perform Full System Scan'
*DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.

7. Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.

8. If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window

9. Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘finish’

10. REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found

Scanning in Spybot Search and Destroy:

1. Downloaded and Install Spybot S&D, accepting the Default Settings

2. In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.

3. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D

4. Click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ then download and install the Updates.

5. Next click the button ‘Check for Problems’

6. When Spybot is complete, it will be showing ‘RED’ entries bold 'Black' entries and ‘GREEN’ entries in the window

7. Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.

8. Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.

9.REBOOT to complete the scan and clear memory.

Adware Away

I think you can get rid of this

Please run two of the Virus scans. Make sure autoclean is enabled on the scans
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co…n_principal.htm
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/virusscan.aspx
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/
http://security.symantec.com/default.asp
Note any thing that can't be fixed

And one anti-trogan scan
http://www.anti-trojan.net/en/onlinecheck.aspx
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

Then post another log
okay- i've done all that you said except the online virus scans……………… cannot use internet explorer and they won't run on mozilla. easysearch biz seems to be one of the big problems. it shows up twice on hijack this log and i can remove it but it just comes back (entries were removed right before this log was created). i have disabled system restore. also having a problem with exploit-mhtredir.gen trojan……………. the mcaffee software on the computer keeps finding this in the hjt log and deleting it if i try to open. when i disable mcaffee i can view log when i try to save it but can't open it to read later. please advise. hopefully the new log follows.

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. Since Temporary folders are emptied now and then (the files are DELETED), it would not be a good idea to have your backups there. Those backups would be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

Then Download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder.
http://www.igorshpak.net/software/3ssetup104.zip
Under "items to clear" click all. Then click "clear selected items"
This will cause your system to reboot,
Reboot in SAFE MODE. If you don't know how click here
Delete the following file(s) listed

C:\WINDOWS\System32\tss.exe

look in Windows and windows system32 folders some of the spelling will be close to files from microsoft
Right click on the file and go to Properties. Then go to the Version tab to see what company name it's from:

iau.exe
stisvsq.exe
svshost.exe
msqdevl.exe
lssas.exe
mservice.exe

Some of these files and folders might have the hidden atribute
How to show hidden files and folders in Windows Instructions here

Then run the AV's and seee if the files in the 04's still show up.

Reboot and Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
i've done everything you said except i can't locate the C:\Windows\System32\tss.exe file…………….. did a search included hidden files and folders but nothing turned up. all the files you said to delete were called TCF files and had an identical icon. while looking in windows\system32 i found some others with the same icon and file type. one happens to be NOTEPAD.EXE which is a program i haven't been able to use. there was also a notepad.exe.bak file without this icon or file association. the other TCF file i found was etool.exe. when i went back to my computer\C:\ the TCF file icon was there labeled dl11.exe….. 24kb and listed as a browser plugin. i left it there pending further advice. i haven't tried internet explorer because i didn't want to reintroduce anything since it's obvious the system isn't clear of problems yet.
so basically, notepad won't open, windows update won't work and i had been having problems using internet explorer. i'll test that after i see if you advise any more changes.
by the way, i do have hjt in a folder of it's own……………. when i go to use it i'm told it appears to be opened from a temp folder but it hasn't been. logs are going into the same folder but mcaffee keeps deleting them (if i don't remember to disable it at startup)

i still see lots of TCF files with that icon that was associated with the files you instructed me to delete. most are in system 32 folder but one is on C:……….. named dl11.exe. what are TCF files? and how do i get internet explorer to function again?

thank you for your help
have downloaded the program and run it………………….. found lots of junk. deleted everything with a positive id. there were 2 items that were marked suspicious filename………………………. HTA file in a suspicious location. i wasn't sure if they should be deleted so i left them for now. so all the files with funny looking icons in the windows and system 32 folders are gone, along with the one that was on the c drive. i still can't open internet explorer, notepad and windows update. new hjt log follows:

what's next?
thanx
additional info uncovered: when i log on as administrator and hit start/run or start/search the computer freezes up. also if i go to control panel when logged as such, hit internet properties, then general to check home page setting……. i see it says about:blank and when i try to change it the computer freezes. is this possibly a clue that about:blank is still on computer?
Can you please run ServiceFilter and post the log here.

1. Then download DllCompare here

2. Start the Program with its default settings and put a check mark in the include subdirectories. Click the Run Locate.com and wait until the scan says complete.

3. Click the Compare button to start the next process.

4. Files in the upper portion have been verified to "exist", Files in the bottom section were not able to be accessed. Very few files should be listed in the bottom section when the Compare scan is complete.

5. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower section to select them. Right-click on the file and use the Option Rescan.

6. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then it will be removed from the list (to reduce the number of identified files)

7. Click the Make a Log of what was found button, and post the log here in this thread using Add Reply to receive further instructions.
i've managed to get internet explorer to run but think that just compounds problem. was able to run some online virus scans though. i tried to use service filter but was unable to extract file……………. shouldn't i have zip software on an xp computer?…… i'm also unable to read instructions for it as i can't use notepad and it automatically adds notepad .exe to the file name when i try to open with wordperfect. when i tried the link for dll compare i received this ….."error 400: bad request". i keep running scans and removing what i find but computer becomes reinfected. i'm seeing tib browser and ie hijacker more than anything. i'm ready to give up and seek instruction on doing a clean reinstall of windows xp. does that sound like a reasonable course? this is a fairly new computer so i don't think he has too many files to back up.
okay………………. managed to run service filter. here's the log: The script did not recognize the services listed below. This does not mean that they are a problem.
