Recently I got a message from Norton Internet Security of an intrusion alert. Something about a "welchia_ICMP_Scan" from my computer against another IP address was detected and blocked. I am not very knowledeable but I think I narrowed it down to an intruder entering through Yahoo Instant Messenger so I uninstalled it and make some changes in NIS, but miss using IM and wonder if you could help me track down the problem if there is one. Please let me know if I can redownload IM if it is not the problem.

Thanks a bunch!

Hello sacotter, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. The first thing I see in your log is that you are running two antivirus programs, Norton and Avg Free. This is not a good policy, and conflicts can occur making you more vulnerable. I suggest, since you obviously pay for the NORTON INTERNET SECURITY, that you either uninstall AVG Free or turn it off completely.
It also appears you are running selective startup, and if a trojan is there and not enabled, I can't see it to remove it. I personally do not believe that is the case, but I can't be 100% sure.

You also have two restrictions set in Internet Explorer, if you did not set them and want them removed, let me know:
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

There is a lot of information about that message at Google:
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navc…lchia_ICMP_Scan

One of the links was too a tool you can run it to be sure if you wish.
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen…moval.tool.html

I believe what has happened is that your Norton firewall stopped an attempt by this worm to enter your system and then sent you a message that it did the job. Please make sure your Norton software is ALL up to date, and do a complete system scan. Please post those results for me. Once you run the tool, post the results of that also. If anything does show up, which I don't think it will, please note the exact location of the item.
When you have completed this, then enable all in msconfig, scan and create a log for me, then you may disable what you do not wish to run without rebooting at that point. Make sure you fix the double antivirus issue, before you create that HJT log. Use Add Reply to stay in the same thread when you post, and don't forget feedback from the scans or anything else you think I should know.

Thanks…pskelley

Pskelley, thanks for the response.

1) I uninstalled AVG Free per your recommendation and now just have Norton Antivirus. It seems to have done me ok so far.
2) I removed the IE lock commands in Spybot and Spywareblaster, however NIS Parental Control and Spywareblaster still limit websites so perhaps that is why "O6 IE restrictions are still present." If that is not the case, in your opinion, please help me with this.
3) I once again ran Adaware, Spybot, updated NIS Liveupdate and ran a Norton scan with "no threats found."
4) I had already gone to the Symantec "Welchia" fix site, followed all directions and ran the "W32.welchia.worm" fix tool twice, but ran it for a third time last night just to make certain, with the following results: "w32.welchia.worm has not been found on your computer."
5) I enabled all in msconfig and applied then ran a HJT log. I did go ahead and restart all in normal mode and ran a log of that too. Perhaps that was a bad idea but I was at a point in which I needed to reboot due to my welchia fix tool or for some reason. This morning I also enabled all in msconfig and ran another log and "F1 - win.ini: run=hpfsched" did not show up. It looks suspicious. If you see any other suspicious things in my startup or if I have processes running in selective startup that could be closed please let me know.
6) Also did some Googling last night on "welchia_ICMP_scan" and found mixed results. Some forums suggested it was an error in a Symantec liveupdate, others thought it was because their firewall settings were too high, others found that for some reason it was targeting Yahoo connections from their computer. That's what I found also, it appeared as though when I turned on "Program Component Monitoring" in my firewall settings and blocked an attempt by "ypager.exe" to go out then I got a n intrusion attempt warning. Very strange but the part that has me concerned is that it says it was from my computer against another machine so I am unsure whether it was a blocked attack against my machine or an intruder using my machine to infect others. Could just be a glitch in the message?
7) Lastly, please let me know if I can go ahead and re-download Yahoo IM when all is complete, or if it is too much of a security threat let me know.
8) Also noticed I have 10 hidden objects on my C: drive. Is that an issue?

Psalm 144:1 "Blessed be the Lord my Rock, Who trains my hands for war, And my fingers for battle…"

May God's wisdom be with you in this constant battle to rid computers of evil!

;)
Hello sacotter, Will do my best to answer:
1) First that is a good move removing AVG Free, but I do believe it could have been turned off in the event of Norton emergency. AVG is a great program, just does not offer the features of Norton, and tech support is limited. I install it on all computers where the owner does not wish to pay for one for whatever reason.

2) No problem with the restrictions, I just like to make the owner aware that they are there in the event they had some help from other users installing them.

3) Good

4) That is great, I keep a floppy disk handy, and put these tools on it. In the event of a bad infection, often you cannot access the site to get the tool. These malware writers are sharp.

5) NO PROBLEM, see this:
F1 - win.ini: run=hpfsched
Nothing wrong with this, see the CC link)
http://castlecops.com/startuplist-1469.html

6) Not sure, as I said, I expect it was just a notification I get messages from McAfee all of the time telling me it has blocked something. I take my computer to places where most folks don't as I work these log. If you can't locate it, probably gone. Did you purge System Restore to make sure it is clean?

7) http://computercops.biz/startuplist-4593.html
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintas…library/ypager/
I have never used the software, prefering msnim. It is a well respected programs, and I see no reason not to use it if you wish.

8) Not sure what they are, but windows does hide protected file, perhaps you ran across some of them. You could use a right click and look in properties to see what they are. You can look at your hidden files and folder by using this like and the instructions for your operating system:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

New: I am getting conflicting reports on this one:
O4 - Startup: EReg.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\EReg206\Reg32.exe I think it is ok, but to be sure, search for it, and right click on it and look in properties. If it looks ok, like has been there since you purchased the computer or you can identify what it is, fine. If not, post back with whatever information you get.
Might have to do with your encoder agent?

Besides that one question, your log appears clean, here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss and ChrisRLG to help you stay that way. Might be some duplication, but better to hear it twice than not at all:

http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=3051
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://www.cjwd.demon.co.uk/compsafetyonline.html

If your computer is running well, the startup item in question resolved in that it is valid, there is no reason to post back. If you have issues with that item, or other concerns, please feel free to post comments and a new log.

Thanks…pskelley
