Click here to download Spybot Search & Destroy - install, update, scan and fix all RED items it finds. Reboot when done.

Click here to download Ad-Aware SE and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Click "Start", select "Perform Full System scan" and "Next" to start the scan. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".

Reboot when done. Rescan with HJT and post a new log here so that any remnants can be removed manually.
OK, I ran Spybot and AdAware. I already had both installed. I updated both before running them. Actually, I had Adaware 6.0 not AdAware SE. Is this OK? Is there any difference? Should I install SE, and if so, will it simply write over the existing version 6.0?

OK, good. Click here to download CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom and run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. Reboot when done. Rescan with HJT and post a new log here so that any remnants can be removed manually.
OK, I ran CW Shredder and rebooted.

Here is the new HijackThis log:

Create a new folder called C:\HijackThis, move the HijackThis.exe file into the new folder and run it from there. This is necessary to ensure you have backups should anything go wrong.

Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

Click here, for instructions on how to enable hidden files and folders to be visible. After enabling, reboot into safe mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded, find and delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\awmomcpb.exe
C:\WINDOWS\b.exe
c:\WINDOWS\System32\zzb.exe

Reboot when done, rescan with HJT and post a new log here for a final check over.
OK, I tried to find HijackThis and move it as you instructed. The shorcut shows the path as C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\XBOEZD22\hijackthis[1]\HijackThis.exe. When I try to find this, I can only get as far as \Temporary Internet Files where there doesn't appear to be a folder called \Content.IE5.
OK do this. Click here to download the latest version of HijackThis. Doubleclick the file, click Unzip and it will save the application to C:\HijackThis. Run it from there to scan your computer and carry out the fixes.
OK, Sorry for the delay. I re-downloaded HijackThis, ran it, deleted the bad guys and rebooted. I am not too familiar with rebooting into safe mode, but I gave it a try. I'm afraid I missed it the first time and I didn't think it was actually supposed to go into Windows (I was expecting some sore of a blank screen with a command prompt), so I shutdown a few times before I got it to do what I think you wanted. Anyway, I couldn't find the first two files:

C:\WINDOWS\awmomcpb.exe
C:\WINDOWS\b.exe

I did find the third one and deleted it:

c:\WINDOWS\System32\zzb.exe

I reran HijackThis and here is the new log:

Looking better. With only HJT running, fix these entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E8450C1F-806D-9812-8DFD-5A8D7D2A16F9} - (no file)

Do you know what this is:

C:\WESTWOOD\REDALERT\INSTICON.EXE
OK, I ran HJT with nothing else running checked the four O2-BHO:….. files, along with the C:\WESTWOOD….., and hit "fix selected". When I rebooted and reran HJT, the C:\WESTWOOD… entry went away, but the O2-BHO:… entries were still there??? (WESTWOOD was aparently some game my son had installed but no longer uses.)

My computer is definitely running much faster, several annoying quirks have gone away, and the original reason for my request seems to be fixed: google no longer gets hijacked.

However, if there is anything at all suspect still residing on my computer, I'd like to get rid of it. There is nothing critical that I am worried about losing.

Anyway, here is the latest HJT log:

Click here to download bhofix.zip. Extract bhofix.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double click the bhofix.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

Post a new HJT log.
I downloaded the bhofix file, extracted the bhofix.reg file to the desktop and ran it. I rebooted then ran HJT. The BHO files are still there so maybe I did something wrong. HEre's the HJT log:
