I have installed HiJackThis and the above is the initial log from running a scan.
My system appears to behave OK, so hopefully no problems, but if you could confirm
this, then I would be most grateful.

I use the following security s/w (all free/personal editions) and update them weekly.
Anti-virus software: AntiVir
Firewall: Sygate
Spyware: Spybot Search&Destroy, SpywareBlaster

Although I use Windows Update every week to check for updates, I have not yet updated to SP2 of Windows XP (Home Edition).

Regards,

paulw
Hello Paul, Welcome to TomCoyote forums. Your log looks good, there are a couple of issues we will look into, and I will give you information about SP2 for when you are ready for it, and a link to order the SP2 CD if you do not have it.

If you set this restriction that is fine, if not we will remove it. Please do not check this line if you wish to keep the restriction.
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Scan with HijackThis and place a check in front of each line item:

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

With all browser windows and programs closed, choose "Fix Checked".

Clean like this: Start, Run type "cleanmgr" without the quotes then ok. Allow windows to remove anything it locates.

Empty the recycle bin and reboot the computer. Using Add Reply to stay in this same thread, post a new log for a final check. If the log is still clean, I will have some great information to help you stay that way.

Here is the information about SP2 I promised you:

Many thanks for your advice and the links to SP2 and "What you should know",
much appreciated.

I kept the following restriction

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

If this helps lock down IE, then so much the better! If there's any way of getting
rid of IE from the Windows system completely, then that would be even better.
I use Mozilla for mail and internet browsing.

Ran HiJackThis to scan and fix other items that you recommended.

Ran cleanmgr and emptied the recycle bin.

Rebooted the computer.

Reran HiJackThis and the resultant log is posted above.

paulw
Hello paulw, Thanks for the feedback. I suppose it is possible to remove Internet Explorer, but I am not aware of what this would do to the total operating system of which it is a part. Here is a link to the Open forum, perhaps your questions might be answered there:
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showforum=10
I do want to say that by far, the vast majority of malware writers are about $$$. The vast majority of users have IE, if that is not ever the case, you can be sure these malware writers will begin to give users of other browsers problems also. I suggest you leave your IE browser alone and just do not open it.

As I said, your log did not look bad before, and the items we removed are of the borderline nature, related to toolbars, and removal is suggested by most malware removers. Since your log is clean, here are the links I promised. Some information might duplicate itself, but I believe you are better hearing it twice than not at all.

pskelley, Thanks for those additional links. Looks like I have a bit of reading up to do. Well, since IE is part of the OS, then I'll not tamper with trying to remove it and, hopefully, I'll never need to use it. Once again, many thanks for your advice. Regards, paulw
