hi guys, it would be great if you could help me…. i'm running xp and ie 6 2800 without multiple users or file sharing programs i just connected to broadband and a trojan got onto my system almost immediately, and kept changing my home page so i installed a zone labs firewall and updated versions of spybot, spyware guard, spyware blaster and anti virus personal these programs found trojans and other things in the start up, which eventually were cleaned but each time i logged on they kept returning so i figured the trojan was still on my system updating itself when it could and i downloaded a-squared, ad aware and microsoft ie updates the luke filewalker anti v told me the archive contained infected files which could not be deleted or repaired so i downloaded fx-agent-b remover which reported removal of fx-agent-b but under the notepad report was a ad pop up which i deleted then an advert for spyware with a link to a site masked my entire desktop i ran the anti virus and spybot and have ended up with a flashing white/grey desktop and teatimer messages each time i start up cor blimey! can you help? would really appreciate it thanks very much conil from london
Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

A link to get your desktop back:

http://www.smart-security.info/removal.html

If that doesn't wotk, try this:

Go to: Start > Control Panel > Appearances and Themes > Display, click the "Desktop" tab, click "Customize Desktop", click the "Web" tab, and clear anything checked in there.

Now, let's check the rest of your system.

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Download HijackThis into this folder.

If required a tutorial is here = Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

Links to Hijack This! v 1.98.2:

http://tools.radiosplace.com/HijackThis.exe
http://spywarewarrior.com/files/HijackThis.exe

Run it from that folder.

Click "Scan".

DO NOT "FIX" ANYTHING WITH IT YET!!!
FIXING THE WRONG THING COULD RENDER YOUR SYSTEM INOPERABLE!!!

Click "Save log".

Reply to this thread, and "copy/paste" the ENTIRE CONTENTS of the log file into this thread.

:)
thanks micah

the desktop is back

here's the log:

thanks mate…

hi micah thanks for getting back to me so quick well i ran panda, which found 5 infections and deleted them however on restart zone alarms asked twice to allow sychost again also i still can't get on the web when zone alarms is running perhaps another firewall? what do you reckon man? conil
This bugger is still there:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Software] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Software\software.exe

Boot in safe mode, fix that item, reboot and post a new log file.
ok so neither software.exe nor sychost.exe come up in the search, so i haven't deleted them also couple of things are happening 1. spybot teatimer asks about a browser value change old c\windows\system32\blank.htm new c\windows\SYSTEM 32\blank.htm and old www.google.com new c\windows\SYSTEM 32\blank.htm 2. cant access any web pages when firewall is on is the worm disabling the firewall? one more thing: when i log on in safe mode, there are two user options - conil and administrator (which i didn't know i had but might have been put on by the guy who installed xp for me) what do you think?

Not as long as it's this one:

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE

Try this.

Copy the contents of the qoute box into notepad:

cd\
dir sychost.exe /s
dir sychost.exe /ah /s

Save it to the desktop as "finder.bat".

finder.bat

Do any files show up in the DOS window?

If so, post the "full path name" (i.e. "C:\windows\system32\sychost.exe")
Download Killbox.zip

Extract it from the zip file, but don't run it yet.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Scan".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Software] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Software\software.exe

Close Hijack This!

Now double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the 'Paste Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste this entry:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\Software\software.exe

Don't click any of the buttons though, instead please click on the Action menu and choose "Delete on Reboot". In the window that opens up, click on the File menu and choose "Add File". The file should show up in the window.
In the same window choose the Action menu and select "Process and Reboot". You'll be prompted to reboot, do so.

Then post a new log file.
