Hi Sheen.

First, we need to make sure Hijackthis.exe is in it's own folder. Here's how:
Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Move the hijackthis.exe file into that folder.

After making sure HijackThis.exe in in the correct folder, delete it from this location, if it's still there:
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\HIJACKTHIS.EXE

Please Download these 2 programs and run them Adaware and Spybot. Here's how:

Download the latest version of Ad-Aware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/

After installing AAW, and before running the program.
Please be sure to update the reference file following the instructions here:
http://www.lavahelp.net/howto/updref/

Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan:

Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.

Click the "Scanning" button.
Under Drives, Folders and Files, select "Scan within Archives".
Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.

Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
Click the "Advanced" button.
Under "Log-file detail level", select all options.
Click the "Tweaks" button.

Under "Scanning Engine", select the following:
"Unload recognized processes during scanning."
Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."
Click on 'Proceed' to save these Preferences.

Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT to allow it to finish.

Download Spybot Search and Destroy:

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

1. Downloaded and Install Spybot S&D, accepting the Default Settings

2. In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.

3. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D

4. Click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ and download and install the Updates.

5. Next click the button ‘Check for Problems’

6. When Spybot is complete, it will be showing RED entries BLACK entries and GREEN entries in the window

7. Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.

8. Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.

9. REBOOT to complete the scan.

Close all prgram windows and browsers.

Run HJT - DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FIX ANYTHING
Post a new scan here in this thread.

Thanks,
Sky
Thanks…already had Ad-Aware… hadn't run it in a while . Was just running AVG. never used spybot . Will run as you recommended and post a new list. thanks again

Hi Sheen, Welcome back.
We have HJT in the correct folder. Good Job!

Download LSPfix here: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Launch the application, and click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox.

Check all instances of osmim.dll (and nothing else), and move them to the "Remove" pane.
Then click Finish.

Open HJT and close all windows and browsers except HJT
Place a check mark next to these entries and select fix:

Reboot and post a fresh HJT file

Thanks, Sky
Wow, peace at last! Thanks.
Skyline, my profession is in databases and all this stuff is kinda out of my realm… go figure. I'm intending to do a pc upgrade soon. With two kids constantly surfing and downloading web games whats my best defense to prevent this type of problem in the future ?
Is ther anything else I should do now or does the HJT log look good ?
Thanks Again!

Hi Sheen,

Your log file is clean. Good Job!

You have a lot of Active X entires that are optional

Please understand that 016 entries like these are not bad, but with so many entries they may be slowing down your browser. So, I would recommend fixing them.

–You can safely delete these entries in HJT - They will re-install if you wish to visit the site again.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure: I know we have already done some of these, but they bear repeating.

SeeTony Klein's good advice "So how did I get infected in the first place?"
http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=3051

Also, there is quite a bit of rouge software out there that can actually cause more harm then good. Go here to read about what NOT to download:

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Install IE-Spyed
https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

E-SPYAD adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers, marketers, and crapware pushers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer.

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.

Sky, Is there any reason my MSN search bar is not working now? " internet page not found" after entering a search. I noticed we removed one command with g.msn . Thanks sheen Never mind…the browser must have been down
