Hi! I hope I've got this on the right forum.
I ran a scan on Spyware Doctor and was informed that Slotchbar and Altnet Software plus 5 other low key nasties were hiding away on my HD. Hope you can help to remove these. Here comes the logfile. Thanks.

Hello arfer , welcome to the TC.

This is what I suggest you do.

Go here and run online scans (all), allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot and Ad-aware. All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hello LDTate.
Thank you for taking the time to help me out.

I have followed your suggestions and every one of the 5 scans came up clean.

The only program that tells me I have problems is Spyware Doctor which I downloaded and used because the free trial period of Spy Sweeper ran out. The first time I ran it, it showed 5 faults. But now it is warning me of 18 items. ( It is set to run on startup). I have listed these things here.

The computer in general runs pretty well. I have the odd blue screen on startup with the Exceptional error message but usually that clears itself by "pressing any key". Now and again I get a freeze up but Ctl+Alt+Del clears things up. Web pages load quite well. (I'm on 150 or 250 broadband—-NTL upgraded their services recently). I don't play games so there are no problems there. E-mails usually arrive as expected. I did have bother loading the TrendMicro scan until I realised that they advise running it on IE and I was using Opera.
Sorry I've been a bit long winded!!

Thanks again. arfer.
Did you disabled items with Msconfig in your startup? If so, we need them turned back on.

These are the only things I see in your log that need fixed.
I suggest you do this:

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Reboot and post a new HJT log.
Hello again LDT,

Yes, I have a whole load of stuff disabled with Msconfig. I have now re-activated them. Some are to do with programs that have been uninstalled. The systray is now full of rubbish and it took nearly five minutes to load after re-booting.
I have done all the other things you suggested and there are only 17 items listed by Spyware Doctor now. The IE plugin has gone.

New Log follows. Thanks. arfer.

Now that everthing is loaded do these again.
Make sure you have Spybot v1.3 and Ad-Aware SE

Whoops!
I need to use IE to run the online scans you recommend, Web Washer keeps sticking it's nose in and will not allow me to connect to any web sites. The only way I can get on TC is to use my usual browser, Opera.
TrendMicro refuses to run on this browser and insists on IE.
Since loading back all those items with msconfig I've got several things that I now never use and thought I had uninstalled. There are also some things that I am not confident enough to get rid of for fear of upsetting the whole shooting match.
So, I have removed WebWasher again from the startup list and will begin the scans and follow the rest of your suggestions after the weekend as I've to go visiting early tomorrow (Friday) and will expect to post again about Tuesday 30th.

This is the message I get from Web Washer——-

WebWasher - Error 500: Internal Server Error

The server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request.

Couldn't connect to server 'www3.ca.com' (port 80) !
Either the server is down or your network is not properly configured. Maybe you have to use a proxy to connect to the internet. Perhaps your modem is switched off / your network card disconnected or the address wasn't entered correctly. Please check if the URL is correct.

If the problem persists you should contact your network administrator.

For further information please read the WebWasher help file or visit our homepage at http://www.webwasher.com !

Thank you for sticking with me on this problem. arfer.

Thank you for sticking with me on this problem. arfer.

No problem. Just do the ones that will work.

Mainly TrendMicro HouseCall, Ad-Aware and Spybot.

Post a new HijackThis log after those.
Hello LDT,
I have now gone through your list again and run all the checks on it.

The computer is running well at the moment. My main concern is the warning I got from Spyware Doctor about "Slotchbar".
I'm thinking of upgrading from AVG6 to AVG7 (the free version). Is this a good time to do it, do you think?
Thanks. arfer.
Here is the latest HJT log.

I'm thinking of upgrading from AVG6 to AVG7

Good idea, I've upgraded to AVG7 myself. Download and let it run a full scan and post a new HijackThis log.
Hi!LDT,
I upgraded from AVG6 to 7 and ran the program. Nothing was found.

Since I re-instated all those applications to the Systray I have not only had to close several of them before doing any work, but now the computer is a bit erratic on starting.

Sometimes I get a solid single green line right across the screen about 1 centimetre from the top edge of the screen and the whole thing freezes up. The only solution is to press the reset button and then, of course, I get the scan-disk treatment because the machine was not closed down properly.

Once or twice it has beeped and restarted of it's own accord soon after the opening screen. When this happens I am invited to restart in safe mode. I usually move the highlight to normal and start from there, and things then proceed with no bother.

I used to get these things happening some time ago but they stopped when I dumped all the extra stuff from the Systray, and only start the programs when and if I need them.

Here's the latest HJT log. Cheers, arfer.

I don't see any real bad guys left. If you want to disable those you had disabled before, go ahead. If you don't want a program like this: CConnect, go to Add/Remove Programs and remove it. If you like, after you have done the above, Empty the Recycle Bin Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Hello again LDT,

I have now disabled all that I don't want running at startup and the whole system seems to be about right. Until I do something daft again. Thank you for your time and effort and here is the last (hopefully) HJT log. arfer.

Log looks good :D  How is it running any issues?

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
Things are running well at the moment thanks. I have ZoneAlarm and AVG7 installed. Adaware, SpyBot and SpywareBlaster are also used regularly. I will take your advice and download Spywaerguard and IESPY AD to add to my armoury. Thanks again and signing off, arfer. :D
